The drive to reach equilibrium price neglects the quality of the finished product. Europe and Asia are mature economies so they care more about the final product than they care about maximising profit.

Not all American candy was bad, but the by-the-checkout stuff was largely trash. That said, it feels like the quality of most standard chocolate in the UK has gone pretty downhill too.
The thing I miss most from the states is Sour Patch Kids, though. The version we have here in the UK is so so much worse, maybe it's all the banned ingredients
