How are complaints handled?
Get specific information about the benefits and compare to your current job.
Think about issues your current and previous jobs/companies have had and ask how the new job would handle them.
Ask about career advancement.
What is the general workday like?
How often does overtime happen?
What is the chain of command?
I would have some other questions, too, but they aren't coming to mind right now.

Thanks you guys
Yeah, the first red flag from some of the questions I asked was that they want to move to a 5 days in the office away from the current 3 days in 2 days at-home set up which might be a non-starter for me.
I will try to negotiate this down. its a bit of a mission to get and this definitely an area where my current job wins out. Just get the job done, they arent too fussed about you coming in.

Unless it’s a substantial raise I don’t think giving up on aspects that you prefer is worth it. Whether it’s working from home, or having an office instead of a cubicle.
Its well over 15k raise
not sure if that counts as substantial - but if they are willing to allow hybrid working and flexibility, then it lessens the impact of the cubicle situation.

15k is a lot and gives you negotiating power for other job prospects in the future. But at the end of the day it's your life quality.
Seems they dont want to budge on the hybrid working thing.
They seem determined to get people back in 5 days a week for reasons beyond my comprehension.
I was about 80% in favour yesterday, I'm about 60% rn

In all my interviews and job applications over the last ~6 years, I have been very upfront and direct in my desire to work remotely 99% of the time. Yes, I will go into the office if necessary or for certain business functions (like corporate get-togethers and what not), but it will not be part of my day-to-day.
Yes, I have given up a lot of salary for this. The time I get back in my life is worth it to me.

I have no qualms with being in, just hate presenteeism.
Being mandated to be at a building 5 days a week whether you need to or not is so profoundly stupid it's difficult to parse common sense and reason.
Fucking hate micromanagement like this.
Also been there 5 years and kind of done.
Man, I'm supposed to be relaxing on recharging my batteries on leave.

By Daz Go To PostThey did.If that was a deal-breaker for them, then I’d say it’s probably a good thing you’re not moving. I get that it’s more money, but fuck that kind of behaviour, you just know it manifests in a 100 other shitty ways too
I agreed to everything else, I just wanted flexibility around days in.
Yeah,
I've done the long commute before, used to work in Richmond while I lived in South East London. Nearly 2 hours one way. I know first hand the devastating impact on one's mental wellbeing.
The last 2 years of hybrid have giving me back so much time. My situation is a bit tenuous, so I'm quite disappointed because worst case scenario I was ready to firm it for about year or so for the money, but they weren't even willing to talk about it, negotiate or come to any kind of compromise.
Am I wrong for wanting to ensure I maintained the work life balance?

GF started school this week. Yesterday was the first math class. It is not something she worries about, so she went ahead and did course work for the next two weeks in it to get it off her mind. I can't remember what her second class is, but she is not too worried about that one either.
This third class, though... The teacher seems to be a real stickler and the workload is massive. A bunch of sketches every week (that the teacher expects to be highly detailed and capturing the "essence" and "purpose" of the subject), I think one or two 3D models a week, and more, leading up to creating assets to use in a video game for a project at the end of the semester.
If I listened and remember better, I could give more or more accurate details on that third class. I just know it is a doozy, especially with a physical condition she has that causes her lots of physical pain if she uses her primary drawing arm/hand too much.

Finally looking for work myself and similar like you I have my criteria but definitely looking for hybrid as I cant do 100% remote anymore. Covid showed that I need an office environment from time to time (we never went in during two years).
Too bad that I probably have to go perm again, but hey, such is life.
Also, if Slaent-London wants some corporate yoga on the side, tell your bosses 😎
By Daz Go To PostGovernance /company secretarialseems we don't currently have anything in that area I'm afraid

The old ways don't work.
GF was super happy last night. One of her assignments is to interview people in the video game industry in order to get a better idea of how it works. It was supposed to be only two that were needed, but she knows some people and it looks like it will over a half dozen. lol
Confirmed:
Game Design & Programming - David and Divo Brevik
Software Engineering - someone she knows at Bungie
Music - someone she knows through Twitter
QA/Compliance/Certification - a friend of mine
And the people above also have told her that if there is anyone other role she wants to interview someone about, they will gladly help to set that up. It looks like she is getting an artist/modeler and a producer lined up.
I am trying to think if there are any other major roles in a game development that are being left out. Maybe art director, sound design, and community management/PR?
She is also hoping this could also take the place of some later low-effort assignments in the class. XD

Earlier you said a Mac is better for software engineering. I mentioned using my wife’s MacBook but I hate laptops, plus it’s a small hard drive that can’t even hold all the programs I need for my classes. I was looking into getting an iMac and doing the 16gb of unified space. Is that good enough?

16GB should be fine ram wise, but it’s on the lower end going forward. I suppose the question is what you’re trying to build/work on
Idk, for now just basic stuff since I’m still learning everything. The iMac doesn’t have more than 16gb so I guess I’d have to get a different model if that’s an issue
Using virtualbox to run Apache Cordova in one class, I need to run a virtualzation of windows 10 in my networking class for some reason but we haven’t used it yet, and in my python class were just using atom so that’s probably not much

fwiw, 16 GB of unified RAM and 512 GB ssd is what I chose for my M2 MBA and that's all I really need. More RAM would be useful if I was running a lot of VMs or doing some kind of specific big data crunching, but that is not really something I do.
I did specifically target this spec for something that would be just good enough for doing light development work. If you need to do something more heavy, then, yeah, you would need to look at a different spec. 16 GB is more than enough for class work.
Unless you begin working with absolutely massive data sets, a ton of images, or large video files, you don't actually need that much storage. I have only used 155 GB after installing a ton more tools on my MBA than is likely needed across all your classes and also several personal programs, including a few games from Steam.
If you do need more, see if your router supports external storage being plugged in and just get an external hdd that holds like 8+ TB.

I'm also a proponent of still getting a laptop, a dock/hub, and external monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard instead of an iMac but I completely understand if that is far beyond available budget. It's more of a dream scenario.
It’s frustrating af playing catch-up on how corporate processes actually work.
I kill at my job but the internal bureaucracy drives me absolutely mad as none of it is logical at all and it’s slow as all hell. Just seems designed to frustrate you ultimately
That’s one of the few things that makes me miss small biz life

It is what it is.
God-willing, I will find something that works for me just as much as I would work for it.
I know I’m just learning this stuff but I’m typing out python code in Atom for one of my classes
Please tell me as you get more advanced there are shortcuts or other programs have built in shortcuts. Having to manually close your parentheses, quotes, etc, seems like it would be a massive annoyance when coding real shit
Again, I know I’m just learning so I should be doing everything manually because that’s the best way to learn. I’m just wondering if it’s always gonna be like this or if there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

There are. Try VisualCode and other editors come with autocomplete for several languages.
However, best to learn the syntax manually early on to understand what autocomplete is doing for you.

Yeah like I said, Im fine doing that now to make sure I understand everything. Once I understand the basic fundamentals I’ll use other programs
Honestly, I turn off autocomplete for parentheses, braces and brackets. It’s more often that I’m having to fix something than it saves me a key click
Ditto. It usually takes an extra command to get back into them especially if you use some of the vim autocompletes.
When I wanna challenge my brain i use any text editor, when I feel lazy I go for my IDE (usually a jetbrains product) lol
By reilo Go To PostJetbrains sucks. Such a resource hog.oh yes it is but it has those quick commands and shortcuts im used to now
