By Perfect Blue Go To PostYou got this, kingi do.
25k over my current position lmao. gonna play it slow and give some other places a chance but wew
Signed up for some program Handshake that my school emailed me about. Thought it was gonna help me get jobs later on
I haven’t even started classes and already had two recruiters. One being the US Navy offering 45k for a comp sci job.
I make more than that and don’t even have a college degree.

So I just got word of the 25k raise is confirmed and that it will be reflected in my next pay which is next week Wednesday. I'm so pleased right now. Getting that call from the MD first thing in the morning I'm supercharged.
Got another interview today at 3. Taking everything I got to not just toss my badge out the window right now
By reilo Go To PostCongrats dude
By Kabro Go To Postencouraging to see my slaent brethrens moving up the financial ladder.
congrats!
By Kibner Go To PostGrats! Thanks lads. Got told by the MD and RD that I got exceeds expectations twice in a row and that I'm on track to be a director and eventually be running this financial institution. It's extremely overwhelming cause I have to straighten up and get a graduate degree in Law if I want to be at the top. I can do it but just this opportunity is something that I never imagined this early at 35 and I'm not ready for it. This is 3 years in the future mind you but I guess you are never ready for these once in a lifetime opportunities.
Good luck to all seeking new jobs, too!
Onwards and upwards l guess. I'm honestly sweating 😅right now. Never imagined quitting my previous job without notice 2 years ago would have got me 40k net more and a pathway to directorship.
By DY_nasty Go To PostVery tempted to ask to be reassigned at my current placeIt can't really hurt unless they then assign you the "troublemaker" label, imo.
Congrats Lunatic. Glad you are killing it while enjoying that island life.
Nice that you have a great goal to aim for it and that the higher ups believe in you that much.

At this point, its just gonna get more and more obvious my values and self worth don't line up with the priorities and expectations at my office. My contracting company is great. They know the director here is ass. I'd just rather get space before something blows up. Idk
Also could put my two weeks in now and start barbacking 😂
By Kibner Go To PostI once put in two weeks without having even started looking for a new job. Felt so good.Ditto. Was broke for the next year but the freedom and lack of day to day stress from work was worth it. Took a gamble on myself and it worked.
Only reason I'm not in a hurry to do that is because I already took a year and change off.
Gonna turn down the higher paying job I mentioned earlier. Even with the raise, its lateral and keeps me in Virginia another in year.

Come start a bar in Korea.

Just open a margarita bar around a US base = MONEY

I've been thinking about the bar thing more and more lately too.
I'll follow up on this.

One of my friends recently got stationed in Germany again. The first thing he told me was "No Margarita and tacos bar. Your idea is still doable"
I think I once spoke about The Hill in Seoul with DY, but man that has pretty much become gentrified.
@dy,
Phase 1: Teach English
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Open bar
I will let you figure out that ? Haha.

Teaching English never seems to pay anywhere near good enough to make an international relocation worth it.
I've explored it a few times now and it's just not gonna make sense considering the career progress I've carved out so far. Any fresh start I jump into needs to have more upside than that.
Last thing i need is to fall on my face in a foreign country

If you're single and good with money you can save a lot teaching in Korea. The problem is people go there and just get drunk every night

At you in this point of your life fair enough, but military contractors make bank here. Or at least that is what they tell me haha.
One dude was actually living in one of the elite parts of Seoul all paid for. Was pouring me 200 dollars drams of whisky for fun.
And those jobs never open up because those dudes never leave 😂
By Call Sign: Apollo Go To PostIf you're single and good with money you can save a lot teaching in Korea. I don't even have a degree to fall back on. The ceiling on teaching would slap me in under two years. The only thing you can do after that is drink tbh

Come get drunk with me.
You will save a shitload not paying American soju prices.
If you have any teaching experience then you can always go to an international school instead of just English teaching. You can make big money in a lot of countries if you can get on that circuit
English teaching overseas is a temporary gig kids that just graduated from undergrad take as a semi gap year and for people who can’t hack it back home. Go abroad to do something but don’t teach English

Haha, this is just stupid.
I want to believe the English teaching thing is real, and the stuff sohois mentioned isn't false either, but the barriers to entry just.... don't often mesh with the whole uproot your life and make it work path.
Odds are that if you jump into overseas teaching with no other income to lean on, you'll burn out in 6 months to a year. Seen too many people fall flat. I could be dead ass wrong but the climb from entry level to stable and supported seems narrow as fuck.
You gotta get way too lucky and I feel like I burned mine out ages ago.

By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostHaha, this is just stupid. It’s true m8. Stuff like the JET programme is cool for a little but that’s not something to make a career of.

Yeah fr - for context, I'm making substantially more than DC median household income with no degree.
I'm not taking my no degree having ass around the world and falling upwards without a plan and a few miracles lol

You also need a university degree for the teaching English scheme anyway. It’s not something worth looking into unless you’re highly trained in that area, IMO.

.
Again, you don’t really know what you are talking about.
I know many a person who has made a career of teaching English, including myself being a manager of a very successful academy.
Teaching is teaching wherever you are doing it. Maybe people prefer living in a different country rather than not being able to ‘hack it’ in their home country.
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostI know many a person who has made a career of teaching English, including myself being a manager of a very successful academy. And? Just because there’s a few lucky individuals out there, probably with significant connections and/or nepotism, doesn’t disprove anything. Dropping everything as a grown ass adult and taking precarious teaching jobs is a bad idea.
Since we are throwing out unverifiable anecdotes, here’s a fun one for you: one of my closest friends was teaching for years with VIPKid until one day he was left unemployed because of the Chinese government’s crackdown on tutoring. And he wasn’t even living over there… can’t imagine how fucked it would have been if you get the rug pulled under you while living over there.
That's the thing - I'm not down bad. I'm doing way better than most out here and thankful for it.
And as much as I don't like my career at times, I don't think its realistic for me to jump into teaching overseas with no certs, degree, license, etc. I can only speak to Japan (as I've considered it briefly and know a few people other than BA who've tried to make that jump), but there's not a formal pipeline attached to most of those positions.
But I'm all too happy to be wrong lol - just explain how its supposed to happen. As is, I think finding near-equivalents to my current stuff while building off my existing skillset and being patient for any overseas opportunities makes the most sense.
I'm even leaning towards to just using my damn GI Bill already and going back to school full-time since I can't really juggle both work and school.

Again, you are just talking out of your arse.
I am not even saying it should be a career for anyone, but you get insurance, pension, and for a lot of people career progression through hard work, like getting masters, rather than connections and nepotism.
A lot of people have turned teaching English into a career and allowed them to enjoy their life. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters.
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostAgain, you are just talking out of your arse.Fair enough man, I suppose you’re right to an extent. Perhaps I did come on a little too strong and cynical on the whole idea.

I'm kinda exhausted from betting on myself. And as someone who changed careers twice already, I got no problem saying the idea of doing it again is terrifying. So much shit has to go right... you gotta get lucky and not just meet the right people but you gotta say all the right things. The cushions need to be lot thicker the older you are too.
Any bit of extra, real certainty to accompany all the dice rolls that comes with it is huge.
This did convince me to take another look at some traveling nonprofits though.

Maybe third time's the charm
I'm set on this one place nearby and some out of state stuff when it comes to jobs in my field. Gonna think on it over the weekend and consider all-in on a small university somewhere.

By Old King Rob Go To PostWell, first day of classes. I think todays class is about PythonPython is one of the easiest languages to pick up. Fewer weird characters, forcing indentations, and more natural (English) language syntax all help with that. You'll be fine.
I hope I don’t regret this
Really, the main things to focus on learning in your first year are:
- freshman high school level algebra
- variables
- boolean logic
- loops
- arrays
- methods/functions/python-may-have-another-name-for-this
Every programming language that I know of uses those basics so, if you can master all that, congrats! You now have enough skills to be hired for an entry-level job somewhere where they can teach you the specific needs of their environment.
Add some basic SQL/database knowledge and like 95% of all business programming is possible. Everything else will require either some heavy math skills (statistics and whatever is required to come up with approximations to existing mathematical formulas but with fewer steps), general experience, or some kind of specialized knowledge about the subject matter of the job.
Python is great. Don't sweat it!
I've worked with many people that switched careers, went to a six month bootcamp, and now are making more money than me despite having a decade less experience and responsibilities 🥲. You'll be fine.
