By Auto Simeone Go To PostGamers expecting devs to crunch during Corona whew
By GQman2121 Go To PostI don't know man. They're so far behind at this point. I don't put a ton of stock in social media likes or engagement but the interest just doesn't seem to be anywhere near the level of their competition.
Nintendo is Nintendo. But Sony really did hit on a lot of things for a lot of people in gen 8 and converted a bunch of 360 players into Playstation owners. I just can't see showings like this closing the gap at all.
It's bad showing for one game in particular. If you don't like the rest that was shown, then the xbox ecosystem probably isn't for you, and that's fine.
It's nowhere near a Xbox One situation under Mattrick.
Even the stockholders gotta wonder with sky-rocketing dev costs and time if giving away AAA first party for cents on release day is worth the return? - Furthermore, how is it sustainable? - how much did they pay Bungie to put Beyond Light on GP?
By GQman2121 Go To PostJust downloaded and watched the Halo trailer in 1440p.Selling you the box isn't the priority, Microsoft wants to sell you a subscription and you choose what device you use it on.
Are they serious with this shit?
This box better not cost any more than $399 at launch or I really feel like they're in more trouble than they were in 2013 with Mattrick.
Games pass sounds really good though.

i don't know, man.
for some reason, you saw parallels between the ps5 and ps3--which i don't see at all--but this time around, the parallels between the one and series x actually are there with the muddled messaging and xbox figureheads (phil and aaron) who constantly have to clear things up causing even more confusing, the two not very good showcases in a row, and, above all, their flagship title being turned into a meme.
why even consider buying a series x at this point when (most of?) these games will run just fine on the one x?
i mean, why even get a series x at launch?

Parallels between the PS3 and PS5, I meant from a hardware perspective and the unique features that they had relative to the comp. The Cell was insane and hard to develop for. First parties were able to squeeze the most out of it. PS5 comes with some exotic I/O solution, and the system isn't relatively hard to develop for, but it will be primarily Sony first party studios taking advantage of the SSD. Third parties aren't going to go super hard on one SKU out of a handful to optimize performance to the level of a Sony studio, at least I don't think so. But it's definitely something that makes it unique vs the XSX. That's what I was getting at.
The messaging is a bit muddy, yeah.
Why buy a xbox series x? They've repeatedly said over and over that you don't have to. They're obviously going for a service based approach. They say quite often if you don't want to buy a XSX but rather play on your PC, or xcloud, that's fine with them. It's a concept that people can't seem to wrap their head around. The XSX is just a mechanism to get you into GP at the highest fidelity out of their available systems. That's it. They'll still get your $15 a month whether you play through XB1, XSX, xcloud, or PC.
By Daz Go To PostEven the stockholders gotta wonder with sky-rocketing dev costs and time if giving away AAA first party for cents on release day is worth the return? - Furthermore, how is it sustainable? - how much did they pay Bungie to put Beyond Light on GP?
It's doing great numbers.
As far as how it's sustainable, why care? You're getting a bunch of available games to you for a flat fee per month. Let them figure out how to sustain it. They made $13 Billion in revenue in one quarter. I'm sure they'll be ok.
oh, i know you were talking about the hardware re. ps3 and ps5.
but how are they going to get more gamepass subscribers? they're not just magically going to appear out of nowhere.

What do you mean how? You think they're tapped out at where they're at? They just eliminated the $60 price for annual XBL subs, to most likely tie in GP to a new price tier to where it wouldn't make sense to NOT move to it if you're already paying for a XBL sub that's say, $5 a month cheaper. That's a ton of people right there.
And in general, the concept of getting a ton of games for a relatively low monthly fee vs dropping $60 for a single game isn't that hard of a sell.
@Smokey - I dont doubt Microsoft's largess - my question question is regards to the long-term Xbox Netflix model approach.
Very curious to see how it pans out.
Major pubs wont go for it without guaranteed returns - the kind I am not sure MS can consistently assure
Internal 1st parties will need to pump out games at a regular cadence to justify the AAA value prop.
That is quite the pipeline.

I saw an interview earlier that asked them about how they make money off of it, and they basically said, yeah they take a loss putting 1st party stuff on there, but they make it up by retaining your services over a period of time. By rotating games every month to keep you subbed. By telling others about it. The $1 a month hook to get you in.
I'm sure it's not cheap and MS is probably the only one who could afford to do it. But GP has been a thing for years. The CEO giving it a ringing endorsement in an earnings call probably means it is doing quite well against their internal benchmarks.

By bud Go To Postselling xboxes is one of the best ways to get more subscribers, no?
One way yes.
So is playing on your phone. So is PC Game pass.
If you're insinuating that the XSX won't sell...I don't think that will be the case. It won't beat PS5, but I'm not sure MS really cares. And again, they've said if you don't want to upgrade to the XSX that's fine, they'll support you on your current Xbox with GP i.e. we'll still get money off of you.
@Daz
Microsoft keeps charging me twice for Game Pass so I don't doubt they're making bank with these underhand tactics

What the hell is this about? So those games they showed are years off?
What do they have at launch other than Halo?
I'm also not clear on how their cross-buy works. If you buy Halo for XB1 and then stick that disk into XSX six months later, does it just install the same version or is there a patch? Or does it download a new sku? What if you're not connected to the internet or don't pay for Xbox Live? Then what?

The launch lineup hasn't been announced...for PS5 or XSX. Neither has a date or price. It's not a MS specific thing.
About Smart Delivery:
But what does that mean for you, the player? Well, it means that if you purchase the Xbox One version of a supported title, we will deliver the best version of it to your Xbox One, as usual. If you decide to jump into the next generation with Xbox Series X, we will automatically provide the Xbox Series X version of the game at no additional cost when it becomes available. You won’t need to do anything in terms of choosing a version to download. We’ll take care of all of that. And it’s not just limited to games that you purchase digitally; physical discs of Xbox games can also support Smart Delivery if the developer or publisher decides to implement it.
By GQman2121 Go To Posthttps://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2020/7/23/21335984/microsoft-xbox-series-x-exclusive-next-gen-promisePretty sure that it's the same SKU, they will just patch it for the next gen version. You won't need Live Gold to download a patch. Purely offline consoles have been gimped for a few years given the amount of updates and fixes games get this days.

I think it’s all across social media and on their Halo Waypoint forums as well.

they say they have 10 million gamepass subs so if everyone is subbing at full price (which they aren't) for an entire year then GoT and TLOU2 would have to sell just 20 million copies (at $60) in order to bring in more revenue*. TLOU2 alone will do that.
it's also highly likely that the gamepass service doesn't make any profit currently.
(*i'm aware this is a massive simplification)
I'm concerned that some of you are more concerned with the profitability of GamePass than you are with how pro-consumer it is in it's current form.
£4 a month, £48 a year. Access to pretty much the entire first party line up of Microsoft's releases as well as some third party games and a lot of indie games. It's a cracking deal (on PC at least).

And Microsoft need something like this, it's their thing.
The other issue with Netflix is that their content strategy is extremely geared towards subscriber count. They saw shows didn't have a positive impact on subscriber count past two seasons, and so started cancelling shows far earlier.
Not saying it's the same with Xbox, but there will probably be some interesting decisions made with regards to game design if GP is the goal

I'd love it if microsoft allowed me to use MY pc properly when it comes to windows games installed via gamepass. There's still about 100 gigs of unusable data on my SSD from games that their app pretends isn't there, with no option to uninstall and no option to delete.

they're still cash flow negative by a lot.
I'm not saying what you can and can't discuss, or how you should be discussing it by the way. Just pointing out that it reads a bit weird that you're more interested in the profitability of it than you're interested in how it potentially opens up gaming to less well off individuals and families. The type that may only be able to afford 1-2 games a years now have access to hundreds of games a year for the price of one.
In it's current form, I believe it is a net positive for the industry.
