By Fenderputty Go To PostOn a scale 1 - 10 how big of a time sink is 14It's an mmo. So, a 10.
The post-base game content has enough single player story stuff to push you along at a good pace, though. Heavensward is the first expansion and the patch or two right before it came out was where the devs really learned how to make questing through the main story compelling.
Dy and other fans of X-COM 2, ESAMarathon is doing a run of the game in under 90 minutes right now. There should be a VOD up later, if you'd like to check it out.
By DY_nasty Go To Posti don't get what ppl see in that gameVery easy to see why some like it or were drawn to it back then. A samurai action rpg by Team Ninja based on the Sengoku period where you get to fight historical figures remixed with Japanese mytho and with some weebo elements sprinkled on top. Even the main character is based on an actual real guy, William Adams the first Western samurai.
I didn't care about any of that until I tried it myself and liked the feel of the combat. A heavily disfigured gem, but a gem nonetheless.
Disgusting, blatant clone of SoTN, except with Deedlit from the Record of Lodoss War anime as the main character.
Day One.

TW3: Can't wait to get to Skellige, this Dandelion thread legit lasts about three times too long.
Not a fan of getting basically no xp for quests you've outleveled, just encourages me to rush around the map picking all the quests up at once, and then go through them in a systematic order.
Would be great if they can figure out a way to make money meaningful in TW4. The haggling is a nice idea, but it doesn't really matter to your progress. You sell everything and buy nothing.

Does Dark Souls count? If not, only two. Fire Emblem on 3DS and Ni No Kuni on PS3.

Dark Souls clearly not weeb.
Ni No Kuni i'll allow since it's well known that Ghibli is not anime.
i'll give you a pass for now but i will assess the situation again in a year.

It was Awakening btw. Robin x Tharja all the way.
I get a pass tho, right? Playing one extremely weeb JRPG is pretty low down there compared to some folks here chomping at the bit for the FF7 Remake.

Let me rephrase some, because I can sink time into a game at nights.
Last MMO I played was also a FF. I distinctly remember spending hours camping mobs and competing with gil farmers, mining for ores to sell for gil etc etc. I also remember hitting a point in time where I could do virtually nothing in the game without scheduling time slots out to meet up with people to do something. This is what I don't want. My wife usually goes to bed around 9-10 though and I usually go to bed around 11-12 so I generally can get 2-3 hours of gaming or Netflix time in. That last FF MMO though … 8 hours a day wasn't enough.

It's free … I'll give most things a shot for free.
By Fenderputty Go To PostLet me rephrase some, because I can sink time into a game at nights.Ahh, then this would fit in very well with you. There are only a couple pieces of required content that always take an hour to go through and they were at the end of the base game before they really understood what worked best. 90% of content is done in a half hour or less.

No competing for resource spawns.
Following the Main Story quests generally gives you enough (if not more than enough!) XP and gear to keep up with progressing through the Main Story.
All casual content has matchmaking. There are rewards for repeating old content, so the matchmaking always has you covered. Though, you will want to be a tank or healer class if you don't want long queues. Also, loot system in matchmaking is always need/greed and you can only need on stuff that your current class can wear.
Speaking of classes, you only ever need a single character. You switch classes by changing your weapon. Class levels are independent of each other. This also extends to crafting. There are loadouts built into the game to help make changing much quicker and easier.
All the expansions have better stories than mainline FFs after IX, imo. The base game story is a little weak and has the most filler, by far. They have toned it down some and changed the XP curve so you don't have to do any grinding to progress.
There are a million and one side things to do but you don't need to do any of them to do the main story. Most side things also can only be progressed a certain number of times per day or week to lessen the risk of burnout.
Oh yeah, controller is a first-class citizen in this game and all content is easily doable with it. Global cooldowns are like two seconds, iirc, so there is lots of time to move around and figure out what you need to press next. If you go with controller, there are a couple configuration options I recommend that are not enabled by default.
The loot ain't great, unfortunately. They are all just +stats stuff. The glamour/transmog system isn't as seamless as I would like but it works well enough.
Character race in the game is purely visual aesthetics. There are stat differences, but at end-game, you are talking about a fraction of a percent more hp/damage. If even that much.
They treat the base game as babby's first mmo. As such, many of the features are locked until you progress the Main Story. As you do so, features will either automatically be unlocked or the quest to unlock those features will become visible. There are icons over each quest giver's head to show you what kind of quest they give:
meteor = main story
bubble with plus sign in the corner = feature unlock (eventually; may just be the start of a chain)
bubble with exclamation point in the center = regular side quest
There are other things I missed, so if you have any questions, ask away.
That does sound WAAAAAAAY better than FFXI with regards to time sink. Camping a mob for 3 hours to get beat by a fucking gil farmer was so fuckin stupid. Having to go mine as a source of income since camping mobs was so iffy was stupid.
I'm used to playing as a support class. Played red mage last game.
I'm used to playing as a support class. Played red mage last game.
14's roles are way more simplified. There are no hybrid roles or anything; just the standard trinity (Tank/Heal/DPS). Bard, Dancer, and Red Mage come the closest to being hybrid but they are still just doing DPS 95% of the time. They just have some party buffs.
Tanks
Gladiator -> Paladin
Marauder -> Warrior
Dark Knight
Gun Breaker
Healers
Conjurer -> White Mage
Arcanist -> Scholar
Astrologian
Melee DPS
Pugilist -> Monk
Lancer -> Dragoon
Thief -> Ninja
Samurai
Physical Ranged DPS
Archer -> Bard
Machinist
Dancer
Magical Ranged DPS
Thaumaturge -> Black Mage
Arcanist -> Summoner
Red Mage
Special things of note:
- the "->" is used to denote changing from a job to a class; you unlock a quest to do so when you get the appropriate job to level 30 (do this asap as the classes have huge stat boosts and more/better skills than the job they evolve from)
- arcanist is the only job to have two classes (scholar and summoner)
- Thief unlocks at level 10, iirc
- Dark Knight and Machinist unlock towards the beginning of the Heavensward expansion and start at level 30
- Red Mage and Samurai unlock when you own the Stormblood expansion and have a class up to level 50; they start at level 50
- Gun Breaker and Dancer unlock when you own the Shadowbringers expansion and have a class up to level 60; they start at level 60
I think that's all correct, anyway.

What Kibner said. During my time with FFXIV, I’ve generally been playing an hour a night or so save for some weekends when I have time to binge and I’ve never really felt like the game was actively wasting my time. You might feel differently though when you get to the post ARR content lol. Running dungeons is also a strangely relaxing experience when you know what you’re doing.
Yeah, they fucked up those post-ARR content patches up until the last quarter or so. Cuz that's when you stopped doing stupid annoying shit and things got real.
By Fenderputty Go To PostIs the game dead? Jumping in now won't be an issue?It has more people than ever, iirc. Maybe not quite so much as when Shadowbringers was released late last year, but still more than at any other point in time.
By Fenderputty Go To PostOK i'll look into the game tonight. I think it was on discount on PS store.The game is also crossplay, though you have to buy the licenses for whichever platform you play on. So, if you get the PS4 version now and want to play the PC version later, you will have to eventually buy the PC version. But you still have access to your same account and characters you played on PS4. It's just a platform license.
Also, a word of warning: the signup process on Squeenix's site is WOAT. They don't know how to internet. So, shoot me a pm or something if you need help.
