Literally swapping Chewie for Rose would have solved a lot of problems--along with sticking with the deaths.

Ahahah, they already started the rumours that what the movie that we saw had almost nothing to do with JJ Abrams's original cut and it was Disney that messed it all up, which would be incredible because Disney would have made the most JJ Abram's movie ever. ST was a success--strong exits for the most part for the OT characters, new cast was pretty good, sith are dead paving the way for something new, rey skywalker can lead the jedi back or w/e, no harm no foul

like, it could have been a lot better, and some people will take longer to get over their headcannons being defied than others, but star wars will move on

My favorite entry in the genre—but by no means the first or only one—comes somewhat predictably from a Redditor who claims to have been in contact with an unnamed source who worked on the production of TROS. This glimmering jewel of r/saltierthancrait, which at more than 2,200 words is more than twice the length of the blog post you’re reading now, claims (but offers no proof) that J.J. Abrams’s original cut of The Rise of Skywalker was quite unlike the film a gobsmacked moviegoing public saw. According to an on-set source who was granted anonymity out of fear they’d be thrown into the Pits of Grik for exposing company secrets, Abrams’s original cut was three hours and two minutes long, which he reluctantly reduced to two hours and 37 minutes at Disney’s urging. It was only at the premiere that Abrams saw the theatrical version, which was trimmed to two hours and 22 minutes, and even then seemed like the radio edit of a pop song, with every pause removed and the tempo cranked to reduce the runtime.

Supposedly, TROS’s numerous frayed plot threads would’ve been tied up in a neat bow in Abrams’s cut. Finn’s unresolved secret to tell Rey would’ve been the revelation of his Force sensitivity, Rey would’ve had more time to come to terms with her origins, and ex-Stormtrooper and spacefaring equestrienne Jannah was intended to be Lando’s lost daughter. (This last point tracks, because while the consternation over the physical requirements of Emperor Palpatine creating descendants is fully warranted, Lando definitely fucks.)

NONE of the problems with ROTS was all this shit that was cut from it but all the shit that was made up for it like fucking Palpatine's return. SW fanboys suck.

Yeah, JJ overreacted to the fan blowback from TLJ - thats why TROS felt so breakneck and fanfic-like - the ending sequence was straight up anime.

Yea but you see TROS would've been great if we could only actually watch Finn tell Rey he's force-sensitive (out of nowhere).

its not that palpatine is not explained
its that he should not be there in the first place
its not that finn didnt say some magical words
its that he doesnt do shit during the entire movie except yell for rey
its that the movie is nonstop action for about 40 minutes
its that Luke's cameo pales in comparison to Yoda having a deep discussion about their failures in TLJ
it's that Kylo goes from an interesting anti villian to a generic Vader clone
its that jj wanted nothing but to do what people already saw

And do it worse on all fronts

The film, if I had to review it would be poorly managed as a result of reading the room wrong, it feels like the focus-testing was done on a fanblog.

Rey didnt need a superpower lineage -

Finn being force-sensitive would have made sense since he did pick up the lightsaber in the first film but in the second was MIA for most of it (so, it feels out of nowhere).

Kylo Ren - Jesus fucking christ, Driver can emote like a champ, but his character's redemption arc needed another film at least.

Poe is in limbo - not sure what he was supposed to be.

The events of the film happen so fast its almost impossible for them to register which leads to countless serendipitous events that just seem too convenient to move the plot forward. I know most films do this, but there was so little effort to hide the contrivance it felt kind of insulting.

Oh Rose, poor poor Rose.

The ending sequence - my god, it was a like live action anime - I had similar feelings back in 2003 watching Matrix Revolutions trying to wrap up its many threads with bombastic sequence after bombastic sequence. And yet again more proof that shippers are a cancer on all entertainment.

All in all, it was a poor decision to have the TLJ directed by a different director, maybe JJ's trilogy would have still been a mess but at least it would have been a somewhat coherent mess.

I was still entertained by this Star War, so fuck it, 7/10

i was more entertained by the prequels' lightsaber fights, and i hate the prequels
the final battle of the entire series is essentially rey standing still until she gets the super special cross saber powerup so she can kill palpatine even though that was palpatine's plan but i guess it doesnt count now

I only reacted to it because going from Rey and Kylo taking turns making mob psycho faces at each other to suddenly lightingbending + rip chewie was jarring as fuck

looking back, that was the only chance the movie had to be something decent

just remembered jj did the rey/kylo talking scenes but
1. rey literally shut the door on kylo last movie so he should not be able to do it
2. now you can apparently teleport items with it
3. he makes it a stupid lightsaber fight instead of them just talking

Ren’s face turn works if it’s Anakin talking to him while he’s dying and not his dad. He thought he was talking to Vader for so long then when he does meet his grandpa it’s a force ghost of a long hair guy dressed liked a Jedi that kinda looks like him. Have Ghost Anakin be the one to heal him

But like JJ can only think in circles

They were legit on the Death Star where Vader died lol, water you doing JJ

We were robbed of force ghosts and got voices, I wanted live action Kanan and Ahsoka

I had to go see this just so i could watch the RLM review, so in that sense it was worth it.

Saber fight on the Death Star had it’s moments.



All in all I wasn’t too upset because I went in expecting AOTC bad and it’s more enjoyable. They should have spent more tile on Palpatine. Dropped hints in previous versions etc. Rey being his offspring is better than any of the sky walker theories.

What I think is funny, is that the movie is clearly a Star Wars fan fic, which seems to be pissing off a lot of Star Wars fans, but not non Star Wars fans. My wife liked it quite a bit.
