Warm take: Red Letter Media ruined Internet discourse forever
EDIT: oh I'm late. Honestly I feel everything Boyega's feeling right now. I remember the VII hype, imagine being the face of it. No one expected them to shit the bed this hard. Even Trevorrow might've made something more interesting

Upper midwest seems like ground zero for snarky deconstructionist gen xers. MST3K, RLM, Dan Harmon...

RJ sidelined him and JJ basically wrote in a ready made sequel about force sensitive Finn, Lando, and stormtrooper girl getting into trouble down the road.
Give me all black star wars Ryan Coogler.
I love that "sidelining" Finn means giving him his own entire personal character arc and some hero moments where he tried to kamikaze the giant laser before Rose saved him.
But JJ brought him back into the fold and had him ... shoot down a couple of X-Wings and shout Rey a bunch.
This is the Star Wars you deserve.

Oh, and lest we forget that JJ's idea for the only two new black characters in Star Wars is to make them former Stormtroopers aka allegory to gang members. But he made one of them important by chasing after the white girl and the other by alluding she only matters because she's related to Lando.
Oh, and the hispanic character turned out to be a drug smuggler.

At least it was an arc and not a reduction of Finn to another comic relief character.
What did Finn do in ROTS? Name one thing.

I didn't say it was good, but at least it was something.

you may not like the tlj b plot but at least both finn and poe had clear arcs of becoming leaders, even finn got the final boss vs. plasma
tros is them being nothing at all

By Xpike Go To Postyou may not like the tlj b plot but at least both finn and poe had clear arcs of becoming leaders, even finn got the final boss vs. plasmaYea that's what I am getting at. The plot points might not have hit but at least it tried to expand the character beyond "former Stromtrooper that gave up the evil life because of a feeling" reductionism. There was plenty a good writer could've expanded upon from what Rian failed to do in TLJ with his character. JJ didn't even bother.

I really gave it a chance. It was horrible to start and I was ready to walk out right after the Palpatine in The Shell shit - but I was still invested enough to actually be upset with how they killed Chewbacca at one point.
JJ loves to "kill" characters only to revive them within 5 minutes.
Remember when Kirk died in Into Darkness only to be revived by hedgehog blood 😂

i love how chewie is alive because rey actually killed another ship that we never saw before or is ever mentioned after
I think the overuse of the death fakeout robs it any tension. Chewie is dead. Oh wait, no he's on another ship. 3P0 lost his memory. Wait, R2 has a backup. This happens a half dozen times in this movie?
And the fact that they had a clear establishing shot for Chewie getting onboard the same ship that was blown up.
This may sound kinda weird, but did anyone else notice how "small" each of the ships and sets felt?
I don't think I've ever really been put off by how tiny a ship interior was in star wars until this movie. Every star destroyer felt like a college campus.

By Xpike Go To Posti love how chewie is alive because rey actually killed another ship that we never saw before or is ever mentioned afterThe hopes and dreams I had really wanted to believe that they were gonna go all in and try and hit Rey with that conflict. Someone could've worked with that. Shit, just throw the planet destroyer penises at a evil rey vs rey fight.
lol nope. you're good.
also "stop trying to do everything yourself" ..... *does everything herself* .... "its all up to you now" what the fuck lol this is actually worse than game of thrones season 8
I think it's partly due to the fact that JJ didn't use any of the ships interior in this one except wherever the ship controls were, no matter which ship anyone was on.
In the other movies, we see plenty more of the interior because the plot wasn't in a rush to get to the next action scene, so we only ever saw the interior of the ships from the control bay because they were always in a chase or in a dogfight. It all comes down to the plot being ass as it left no room for anything.
Also, how dumb is a sandcruiser in a universe with hovercrafts? Seriously? I get they gotta make new toys, but that entire chase scene was shit.

that chase scene reminded me of shia lebouf indiana jones
but the scale was just remarkably off. even the hangar of the flagship looked like trifling. i'm sure some redditor will devote his energy to summarizing that particular nuance too though...

rey lived in a sand planet her entire life but is a better sailor than the people who have lived there their entire lives
and turns out she really was the most important person in the galaxy just as she wanted in tfa

I know the Jedi were incompetent, but even they would've been able to find Palpatine's child much like they found Anakin, right? Like, why was Palp's son not a force-sensitive badass?

I'm aware ... but I refuse to believe Colin Trevorrow's script was somehow worse than JJ's pitch. How did these micromanaging producers -- especially Kathleen Kennedy -- allow JJ to go with this Palpatine plot? HOW?
Only reason she's not fired is because of Mandalorian being a subscriber driver to Disney+.

Just one, apparently. Just one. Whom Palp had his goons kill because he didn't want to give up the location of his force-sensitive granddaughter -- nevermind about bringing him back to Palpatine so he can mindmelt his son for her location.
NONE OF THIS MAKES SENSE.
"Let the past die, kill it" is even more prudent in hindsight.

I bet JJ's idea for Star Wars X is to reveal that Palpatine's baby momma was a sith and evil just like him.
"The baby mommas speak! It's Palpatina!"
