By Pac-12 Go To PostAnd yet the average AAA salary is 12K per year. G-league actually pays better. That's the template for a rookie at triple A if he didn't have the flex, which alot of triple A level rookies do, to get a proper contract...
But NBA wouldn't have 4 to 5 farm teams per team... NHL pays almost 50k to their farm players 🤷🏾♂️
By Pac-12 Go To PostYes, because of the names on front of the jersey and March Madness. Unless the NBA drastically changes the G-league, college sports will be little different than the time before the one and done rule.man the NCAA was begging for the 1 and done rule when the Benders and Jeffersonr were bouncing to the NBA... that rule saved their ass for a bit...
By Pac-12 Go To PostG-league doesn't pay shit. If that were an attractive option, kids would be going there now.G-League pays like $35 on average now for 5-months of work. Get the top rated 18 year olds to play there instead of NCAA and the TV deals and eyeballs will follow. Fuck playing for free when $35k is on the table.
And there's no reason for G-league to pay better, either, because it's not like people go to those games or watch on television. The NCAA is a better marketing vehicle for the players than that.
By DY_nasty Go To Postpretty sure you can try out for g-league teams and keep your eligibility tooTelling you... if you can take a standard NBA contract into the g-league for a year? sheeit

Kids can do that now, though. They aren't. 18 year olds can go straight to the G-league and play for money. They can go overseas. They can do all kinds of things other than going to college, but they still choose to go to school anyway.
I don't think the NBA has any real desire to upend the current model, either. Remember, it wasn't too long ago Silver wanted to raise the age limit, and he's only going the other direction now because the NCAA, at an administrative level, wants the one and done gone, no doubt because of the Adidas scandal, among other things.

Then entered Gatorade money before them scandals hit then his tune started changing a bit. They adding a new team next year too.

G-league vs. college so far has been for the PJ Hairstons of the world who fuck up and get kicked off their teams.
I'm not even saying it might not make sense for more players to take advantage of that league, but for whatever reason, they haven't been, not even recently with nearly every NBA team having their own affiliate. But I think that once the top players out of high school go pro, the next batch of players would rather be the new top players coming into college and being all over your television. I can't envision any reality where those players would ever get more exposure playing in a professional minor league, at least not here in the US.

Think you are missing what I had been saying... if the NBA went in fully... all the teams had affliates and NBA teams were drafting 18 and up with 1st round players having a NBA rookie contract and all players under 19 having to play G-league games until they are 19... and draft expanded to 3 rounds? the NCAA gets nada... that's a hard truth regardless if players are going to the G-league on their own today or not.
However it turns out, I'll be happy when the one-and-done rule is officially toast. I don't actually like Duke's roster being dominated by players who won't stick around (but, at the same time, I'd also rather Duke have them then have to play against them).
I wouldn't mind the NBA somehow sucking up any and all players who have any inkling of having a short (or non-existent) college experience. I just don't anticipate that happening to that particular extreme.

The NBA cannot capture every dollar of revenue the NCAA is getting. They can't. College athletics are not viewed the same way as minor leagues. You're not getting billion dollar contracts for a G-league tournament, not getting the equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars per year that go to the power 5 conferences for TV contracts.
The NBA couldn't kill college basketball if it tried, but even if they did, the money involved wouldn't come along with it.
The NBA couldn't kill college basketball if it tried, but even if they did, the money involved wouldn't come along with it.
Sure they could... it's why the NCAA tiptoes around the NBA. If the NCAA had that flex why would they beg for age limit. I mean the NBA doesn't see that money anyways but if they could make hundreds of million dollars more seems like a good move for the sport
Why would a smaller talent pool kill the NCAA? These schools have built in audiences that the Gleague even its most optimistic projections couldn't hit in many many years. Compared to 30 years ago the NCAA is already running on smaller talent pool as all the best players only stay a year anyway.
People go out to watch Eastern North Pennsylvania State because its ingrained in the community, and they have ties to it, not because the star player is so much fun to watch.

That pool would shrink to a puddle if NBA teams were drafting for the g-league 🤷🏾♂️ you wouldn't have Austin Rivers tier players. That built in fanbase would only last so long...
67 games in the NCAA tournament alone brings in over a billion in revenue annually. That's just the 3 weekends in March and early April. I cannot imagine the NBA ever reproducing that with the G-league. Nobody is going to watch that shit on television.
So, again, kill the NCAA, what you're left with is.... just a lack of an NCAA, really. No (or not much) money is coming along with it.

Both. Heavily skewed towards the blue bloods, of course, but the billion+ from March Madness is due in no small part to the calamity caused by the Eastern North Pennsylvania States of the world. Those are the schools that make the first weekend of the tournament so popular.

I can live with the NCAA as long as they compensate players reasonably, stop screwing players over for no reason, and not institutionalizing rape tbh

By diehard Go To PostThe NCAA in its current form or the complete collapse of college athletics? No they didn't. Or if they did, they reannounced it just to remind people. The G-League has been an option for 18 year olds from the very beginning of the age limit. The only new thing that I can recall is that they're opening up a special $125K salary slot to try to entice elite high schoolers, though I don't know how long that lasts once the age limit is gone.
It's only been in place since 2009, and even then the D-League at the time told high school players to go to college. Stern must have had one sweetheart Cayman Islands account by the NCAA. He even wanted a 20-year-age requirement.
Also, the G-League has done zero recruiting. That's an entirely new thing for them. Imagine Zion having the G-League show up with a $125k check and a direct path to the NBA playing against pros?
"While we believe that the college game is the best choice for the majority of players coming out of high school, not every player will have the ability or desire to pursue that route,"The attitude to entice high school kids to go G-League is VERY recent and only under Silver. Plus we know the age limit is going away come 2021 most likely all together. Stern wanted those kids in college for a good 3-4 yeara first.
D-League vice president of player development Michael Curry said.
Also, the G-League has done zero recruiting. That's an entirely new thing for them. Imagine Zion having the G-League show up with a $125k check and a direct path to the NBA playing against pros?
They want the players in college because they know there is no money to be made in the G-league. I think you guys overestimate just how marketable that venture is. Hell, I think people overestimate just how marketable players are (nationally) once you get beyond the top handful of players.
When's the last time anyone outside of Toronto or now San Antonio cancelled dinner plans so they could watch DeMar DeRozan play? You think anyone is tuning into the G-League to watch an 18 year old Tre Jones?
And Zion is never going to be in the G-League in an alternate universe where he could have gone pro out of high school. He's going to be on an NBA roster. The G-League isn't getting 18 year old LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Zion Williamson. They're getting Trevon Duval.

You keep name dropping scrubs, man. Nobody is tuning in to watch those kids on ESPN, either.
You don't think people would've tuned in to watch that Kentucky squad that had Cousins/Wall/etc if a different G-League team had them compete against each other? Or hell, better yet, the Fab Five?

No, they wouldn't. But you also keep naming players who wouldn't spend a minute in the G-league! Cousins and Wall are on NBA rosters at 18 if they could go.
Yes of course if the NBA just straight up let you. But Cousins for sure would've gone to G-League for $125k if he had the option. After Zion got hurt he flat out called the entire industry out.
And like Blackace said, if you had to spend a year in G-League before coming to the NBA? That shifts the entire market on its head and ESPN follows.

But also note that Cousins said that's what he thinks now and 18 year old him thought differently.
The $125K slot is a new thing, we'll see how that turns out. But as I said before, I don't expect it to last once the top players are eligible for the draft.

NCAA players cannot get endorsements. G-League 18-year-olds can. You don't think Nike throws a few mil contract at Zion if he went to the G-League? The moment they can do that, the moment they start promoting him outside of the NCAA confines and that becomes a snowball effect, too.
