I've never used a 1440p screen, so I don't know what the image quality jump will be like.
I believe Smokey went from 1440p to 4k.
Again, it also does depend on how big the screen is and how far your eyes are from the monitor, and how good your eyes are at picking out little pixels at those sizes and distances.

By AnchovyVapes Go To PostIt definitely doesn’t seem pointless to me. I noticed a massive difference going from 1080p to 4K at 27 inches, but I suppose how close you sit matters too.
Ask Smokey and Horse, they’re on 27 inch 4K monitors too.
It isn't. But I would go for a slightly larger one if I could.
Is this just for gaming? Windows and legacy programs still have problems with DPI scaling, and 163 PPI is just too high to not use scaling.
It's my opinion that the loss of performance going to 4k from 1440p isn't worth it.

Unless you have your monitor far back on your desk or something.

With no scaling, yeah, it's tough. But I think Windows defaults to 150%, and that's what I use for regular desktop use.
I have: Ease of Access -> Display -> Make text bigger -> 150%
Even on 1440p. Because I'm an old and the bigger text makes things easier to read with no eye strain.

I had an issue with scaling recently, can’t remember what it was. Might’ve been something to do with The Outer Worlds. In any case, had to drop back down to 100% and to be honest I’m finding it perfectly usable.

The only thing I changed was the text size scaling. Not every app recognizes it, but enough do that it is worthwhile. Some minor issues but nothing as breaking as the "Make everything bigger" setting.

Only downside is if I drag a window off to the other monitor, I need to zoom it back out since it’s massive at 1080p.

WCCFTech are reporting that 2080 Ti Supers are rumored to launch in early 2020 because the Ampere GPUs are delayed.
Would be good if AMD could compete at the high end to put a stop to this shit.
WCCFTech are reporting that 2080 Ti Supers are rumored to launch in early 2020 because the Ampere GPUs are delayed.
Now the main reason we are hearing this news is that industry insiders and experts believe that NVIDIA's Next-Generation Ampere GPUs aren't expected to launch until the end of 2020 or even early 2021. This again means that since NVIDIA won't have a new major launch product for 2020, they would be offering a supercharged RTX 2080 Ti to take on whatever AMD has to release on the high-end side. Considering the performance difference between the RX 5700 XT and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is already huge, the higher-end Navi cards would even find a tough time competing against the RTX 2080 SUPER, let alone a SUPER variant of the 2080 Ti.

Windows scaling is per display but applications have different versions of the scaling API implementation. You might have an application that scales correctly on your 150% display but drag it over to the 100% display and it won't re-scale.
If you go to task manager and the details tab, right click a column and go to "select columns" and check "dpi awareness". Look for the GUI process and if its unaware it will have problems with scaling, if its not Per-Monitor v2 it can have some problems changing between monitors.

Custom USB-C cable from Mechcables has arrived. Ordered / paid for on September 30th, delivered on November 7th. Looks sensational and matches the lighting theme I have going on, despite what this crappy phone pic would have you believe. The craftsmanship is immaculate.
Turns out I went with just the right coil size and length. Going to drill a hole and print a grommet next, after which I should be set for a good while.
Very happy with the Ducky One 2 SF as well. Going back to Cherry Reds was as non-problematic as expected and I definitely enjoy them more than ... whatever the G613 had. Just an easier, smoother linear switch. I'm still getting used to not having the F1-12 keys row up top, if mostly because of how sporadically I get to use the function key. Still, if and when I'll be needing another keyboard, I think I might give 75% a go.

Is HDR on PC worth the hassle it appears to be causing me so far?
Running my PC on a Samsung 4K QLED which does support HDR. Been trying to get HDR working and it's not having it. Windows doesn't even detect that my display supports it unless I re-arrange my ports and cables (I have one of the Belkin 2.1 cables, which enabled HDR in Windows), and even then the image is really messed up. Not sure what the issue is. I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 1660ti, so not the very top end but should be good enough for HDR?
Not particularly impressed with HDR on my Apple TV either using the same set up (although that does at least work) so not even sure how much I want to persist.

HDR isn't that well supported in the general PC ecosystem right now. It is much better than it used to be a few months ago, but there are still problems. Smokey, Vapes, and I think Laboured all have HDR monitors and could maybe help you with specifics.

I think Smokey will be more help with this, IIRC he has hooked his PC up to a HDR tele.
I use a display port 1.4 cable to my HDR monitor and it just works. Except for one time it stopped working, but then seemed to fix itself on its own.
Shouldn’t be a hardware issue with your GPU, but could possibly be an issue with your settings in the Nvidia control panel.
Definitely worth getting working though. HDR looks fucking superb in every game I’ve tried it in so far.

There seems to be more handshaking issues when going from PC to HDR TV, vs a monitor. I dont have any issues with it on my HDR monitor, using a DP cable, but I think I had to mess around a bit to get it right once I hooked my PC up to the TV via HDMI.
But in general yes, HDR is well worth it. It's actually done better in games that support it on PC vs console, due to the way the platform outputs the metadata.
What have you tried that is in HDR on your Apple TV?
Also Google around and see if others are having the same issue with that TV. It could be an obscure setting on your TV that is contributing to the issues.
Thanks for the replies guys, really appreciate it.
I’ve actually managed to sort it. I don’t even know how. Literally all I did was swap the decent HDMI cable from my Apple TV to the PC and turn HDMI on in Windows and it’s outputting fine. Not tried any games yet but, the picture is sound. I’m pretty sure that’s what I did last night too but for whatever reason it looks good now.
With the Apple TV and HDR you just have to be careful. Setting it to output HDR by force really messes with the picture for my tastes. Loads of folks online say you’re better off setting it to output in standard by default but set to content match for HDR. I’ve probably miss-sold it by saying it’s not great but, HDR has deffo been a bit of a faff every time I’ve tried to use it. Hopefully sorted now though.

Anyone had any issues using an X1 controller wirelessly on PC via bluetooth?
I can pair it, it'll work flawlessly, but once the controller turns off and I try to reconnect it, the light just flashes forever without reconnecting. Only thing I can do to get to work is delete the device and go through the pairing steps again, which is an arse.
Tried all the shite troubleshooting on the MS site that comes up via Google too. Happens with two different pads on the laptop.

By Wahabipapangus Go To PostHopefully they do a tech run down, on the hardware needed to run the rockstar launcher.
Future proofed.
By Laboured Go To PostFuture proofed.Hah.
Somewhat related, I decided to try EQ2 again since it is free and I wanted to see what it was like 15 years since I last played it. The devs tried to make the game future proof.
However, this was at a time when the P4 was king and the devs assumed single core thread speed would advance much quicker than GPUs. As a result, the game is mostly single threaded and doesn't have the GPU do as much as it otherwise could.
It wasn't worth rewriting the engine, so they, over time, offloaded what processes they could to other threads (not many) and were able to make shadows render (mostly) on the GPU.
The end result is a game that can't really be maxed out at 60 fps, even today. Still looks aight for a game that old, though.
Nov 25 launch date on the 3950x.

Getting close to ordering the Alienware AW2518HF and I realized I've never actually used a dual monitor setup at home for a significant amount of time, so I'm wondering what the experience is like in Windows 10.
Like, the little things. Say I want an app / game to always display on the secondary display ... how do you set that up? Any other tips & tricks?

MW is potluck. I only play it on the X27 but sometimes it’ll open in windowed mode on the AW25 and I’ll need to drag it over.
What kind of speakers are you all using? I've been dealing with a shitty logitech surround sound set for some time, for my PC, and can't be bothered with both all the wires and the quality anymore. Looking for something at max around 500 euros, but if you make a good case for something a bit above, I could go with that. I was thinking about Audioengine A5+ Wireless, they are on sale atm.
I'm using Tannoy studio monitors. Why wireless though? Unless you plan on moving them around and stuff.
