Makes sense, but these companies are US based, which means the world is heavily relying on worldwide platforms being properly regulated by a US government. I'd rather bet my house on red.

Not that I disagree with this, because I do agree, but I think a large portion of this is that people are lazy and want their core beliefs confirmed. People aren't interested in introspective analysis and especially so if it takes time. Which is why social media is so problematic. I think a lot of people can sense what they're buying into is BS, they just don't care internally.

Properly implemented can't start with a shortcut though. If social media hubs can't be forced to recognize certain standards then you're essentially asking the government to take the reigns - and that's not a solution, it's one of the worst case scenarios. They need real, enforceable regulation and appropriate, proportional repercussions.
For starters, there's obviously more that countries can be doing to address or at the very least properly identity and label these influences. That has to be step one. You can't just ask people, or condition them, to do things that you're incapable of or unwilling to do.
