On my way to high wycombe to celebrate grans 80th. Parents flew over from bay, uncle and aunts all over the world in for a surprise party for her. Quite excited, broke out the red velvet smoking jacket. Really eternally grateful for my wife for repairing relationship with the family, should be a good day. Needed to break from the business stress for a bit, however in overdoing it still not enough.

Yeh last bit of fuckery I had with a garage was over a head gasket. Guy wanted 600 raheems. Didn't even skim the head. Put the belt and cogs on wrong so as soon as he turned the engine on he bent 4 tuppets.
Guy still wanted to be paid lmao. Didn't see a penny from me the cunt

Had half a dozen oysters as an appetizer for lunch. These were from Connecticut. Very good. Starting to like them after not trying them for forever. $15 for 6 tho 😬
That place I go to where before take me has a sampler platter with types from all over. I tend to like the flavor of the smaller ones better
Finished a tender today and both me and my mentor looked at the big ass parcel, and talked about which one of us would wrap it up.
So he woke up his wife.

HVAC, plumbing, electrical.
Basically home repairs or building development is never in short supply especially as tons of older homes and strcutures need updating. Still a ton out there with old energy defficient furnaces, lead pipes, knob/tube, etc.

Get into a union and they pay for the education. You can do a LV career and shorten the duration of your apprenticeship. If you get into the electrical side and stay out of the comms side, solar is pretty abundant right now. Lots of commercial depending on location.
Be prepared to move to where the work is. Los Angeles is fucking booming and lots of areas in California are doing solar. Locals do pay depending on cost of living scales. Local 11 is LA pays very well as an example. A Journeyman makes like $45 an hour wage in LA and get a pension, medical etc etc on top of that. That's 93K a year after a 5 year apprenticeship. A forman gets a truck with a gas paid for. GF's get bonuses.

Fuck HVAC. Stay the fuck out of residential if you do HVAC. Unless you like being in an attic in the summer. I would recommend staying out of small time resi anyway.
Live better work union.

Plumbing.

Another one to stay away from resi. Unless you like chasing turds. Get into big commercial new construction and a union regardless of trade.
The best paying general trade is electrical BTW.
Finally got the final offer, I'll start on the 24th, just in time to collect some holiday pay.

By FootFungus Go To PostFinally got the final offer, I'll start on the 24th, just in time to collect some holiday pay.what kind of job?
By /sy Go To Postwhat kind of job?I'll be working as an Environmental Compliance Inspector in my local city. Basically make sure businesses/plants are doing their job in pretreating wastewater before releasing into into the main water supply that runs into the treatment plant, I'll also be taking samples and writing reports.
I'm extremely relived since any other job I was looking into had at least an hour commute whereas the office I'll be working at is a good five minute drive, I'll probably bike there in Spring.
I have my degree in Geology, but moved closer to home since my wife went back to get her teaching credential and we have two young boys, who just started preschool and TK this year, that our parents help us out with... So yeah huge relief on top of it being a great job with plenty of opportunities to grow. I was getting worried since I was hitting the 2 year mark since I graduated too.
Funny thing is that the job was posted last year too, I applied but didn't even get called in to take an exam. This time I applied with a reworked essay, a better cover letter, and I finished a 40 hr hazwoper course. I passed the exam but ranked 18th, so I felt like that was it but then got called to schedule a time for an interview, did pretty well and then got invited for a second interview. Whole process has taken a little over 3 months. I think the key was to consistently ask questions to HR, and always seem motivated and interested.
By /sy Go To Postwhat do you do fendy?
Project Manager for an electrical contractor. We hire exclusively union labor. My office is in Anaheim, but the majority of our work is in LA. We're a national company though.
So there is some bias in my opinion, but Electricians get paid more than the other trades. The labor isn't crazy stupid like digging ditches. You can do things like controls which are very complicated and mentally challenging as well.

Yes, but you don't have to. Half the younger project managers I work with are ex-field guys, have are not. All of the old PM's are ex field. We actually have a paid internship program here though. I would say new / young PM's are half college half ex field.

All these non-union peeps out here don't realize the union sets the wage scale for the whole fucking industry. You think non union electricians would be getting paid as much if they didn't have union counterparts setting the industry?
What's even more sad is that none of the PM's are union, and most PM's are anti-union republicans regardless of if they hire from the union or not. However, our wage scales are also set by the fucking union. PM's gotta be making at or around general foreman wages and higher.

My whole family is union... dad was a heavy equipment operator, brother is an electrician, I even was part of the laborer union. Good money, good benefits... Couldn't stress it enough
Bruh no joke trades people make mad bank right out the door and you always need them. Honestly think I should switch professions. The unions in Canada have wages at 50+ an hour. Don't even want to talk about oil fields work as that shit is just upsetting.
The thing being unsaid a bit though is how hard it is on your body. Even electricians will have to get into all kinds of fucked spaces and drill/saw in the most awkward positions in order to lay lines.
Not to mention working outside in shit conditions too.

Apprentices here get two raises a year, plus the percentage their journeyman above them make when they get their raises. It’s like 4 raises a year.
My GF makes like 110k before OT and bonuses. I’m certain he made around 150k this year.

Not really... there are some awkward jobs for sure but that's not the regular and that's why you join the union because you'd still be doing those jobs out the union for less pay and without backup
By blackace Go To PostNot really… there are some awkward jobs for sure but that's not the regular and that's why you join the union because you'd still be doing those jobs out the union for less pay and without backupI understand all that but union or no it will hard on your body.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostI understand all that but union or no it will hard on your body.
Unions parse the labor. Back in the 80’s electricians were still digging trenches. Now there’s a trade and the scope is subbed out. Fuck I pay a union tradesman who does nothing but fireproof calk wall penetrations.
It’s not like a desk job is easy on your body either and tradesmen get their steps etc etc.
It’s not easy work though. It’s still physical labor. Stick to being in the MEP ( mechanical / electric / plumbing) and the physicality isn’t quite as bad.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostI understand all that but union or no it will hard on your body.It really isn't tho. Because you don't do those jobs that often... they happen for sure, but most the time that's not the case. I would say laborers, carpenters, and plumbers got the rough duty as far as the construction trades are concerned
Get into the low voltage comm side of the electrical union and specialize in fire alarm programming and terminations. You’ll never work a hard day in your life. You’ll have days where you work stupid amounts of hours, but the work is chill af

Their unions are the easiest to join. You gotta pass a math test and succeed in electrical theory courses to get through the electrical union apprenticeship.
