By psychintellect Go To Post what happened to that coworker with the revolutionary porn idea smokey?
AFAIK he flew out to LA a couple of weeks ago for follow up meetings and some proposals. I haven't really seen him around the office lately, so I dunno if he took an extended vacation or what.
Hey everyone,

I've been a job hopper for some time now (average of 1 year/company). I mean, it doesn't look *that* bad on my resume because I always seemed to get better positions, but I think this is causing me some problems now.
Look at this guy. Max 1 year stay at companies is a bit extreme, no?
By Smokey Go To PostI'm sitting here feeling out my report for the ranking cycle, what I did etc. And then I remember I had an issue with my supervisor last year. I usually flip the corporate switch when I walk into work. One day my supervisor's tone had me feelin some type of way. It had been building for a while, but I kept cool. Then in a one on one meeting he said something and that switch flipped off.
So now I'm like I bet this motherfucker tries to get me back, and what better way than in ranking. That's how these thoughts came about, sorry if it seems extra random lol.
You don't navigate any kind of ladder without learning how to take/dodge hits though. Real shit, I've seen people bodied for good ideas - a general disagreement with uppermanagement is just something you have to grow to navigate.
My field for example... our community is so small that if you ever want to go at someone, even for being shit at their job, you BEST. NOT. MISS.

This went further than a disagreement. Shit went into the disrespectful category. I'm cool with disagreements, but there's a line, and he crossed it in my mind. Let him know about it right then and there after holding my tongue for a good amount of time. He hasn't crossed it since that incident, but he could be plotting for revenge at this very moment :l

For anyone's who has looked into econ grad school before, do you think I should take Real Analysis even after taking two other Analysis courses?
And for math people, which is more fun+useful: advanced mathematical optimization topics and projects or Stochastic processes?
No, I don't expect an answer, but I'm just throwing out a long shot here.

Take Stochastic Processes if you're looking to do finance related work. I was never a huge fan of probability and option pricing theory, but plenty of folks loved it.
I guess the better question is, are you looking to do a PhD program or a Masters program that is supposed to help you with getting into a more competitive PhD program?
The masters programs at Duke typically asks you to do two analysis courses (basic analysis, then microeconomic analysis), so i think you're pretty much set anyway. Up to what you find fun I feel.
Double Edit: That's not to say you won't ever need to take Real Analysis at some point. Just not necessary at this stage if you're going for the Masters track.
Hmm, I going to try to do a PhD, so I guess I should take Real Analysis just to check that one off my list. Foundations of Analysis is a super fun class, but having four pure math classes seems kinda wasteful when I could be doing more statistics and optimization, but meh. It's something that's wanted.
I'm interested more in IO, Macro, and Labor for PhD research interests than finance, but I think I'm leaning towards Stochastics to take instead of Applied Optimization in Math at this point. My favorite teacher recommended it and she's cool.
Thanks for the advice, Hasphats.
I am glad that you are doing a Ph.D in something business(-y). If you were in the humanities, I'd say run, run away. I have colleagues who are stuck in perma-postdocs or adjunct/visiting prof/temp positions years after defending the dissertation. I still feel bad about not finishing (failure) but then agian, I'm relieved that I'm not working in a department somewhere for slave wages as the only authority on Af Am studies and everyone is looking at their token for guidance on how to respond to events like what happened to Walter Scott.
I did accept my boss' offer to work the preferred hours/position so that I can see my kids every day before they go to school, and see my wife every night before she goes to sleep. Before, there would be days where I could do neither. Times-a-changing

Are these electives? I don't know, having 4 of these math heavy electives might be a tad boring. But as long as you find it fun it's not a problem. 4 out of the 6 electives I took were finance heavy courses (corp. fin./corp risk/etc) and at times I wish I took the time to take a couple of off the wall classes like "economics of the art market" or something.
Just to provide some perspective.
I miss college so much. ;-;
Gotcha. Yeah that limits your options.
Honestly. Your senior thesis is gonna be a lot more important than the classes you took in the grand scheme of things. Assuming that you've already demonstrated you can handle the requisite "quantitatively rigorous" coursework, choosing one specific class over another should not hurt you.

I need to vacate ASAP. What type of job is this exactly? This sounds like a sales position of some kind......
it's sales. honestly the only reason i'm still around and not too pressed yet is just to get through another holiday season. i could pay off a significant chunk (maybe all) of my student loans if things go how they need it to go. that'll also give me time to get a portfolio up from freelance PR/marketing stuff.
it's funny because our marketing section is about to be gone as well. this will be the 3rd group we've had in the 15 months i've been there. it never works out because the head of marketing is a complete idiot and he's not going anywhere because he's family. so they end up firing the marketing group because they think he's a dumbass. or the marketing group ends up leaving because they can't stand working for a dumbass. i'd take the job but then i'd have to deal w/ his dumbass and it'd be a significant paycut since i wouldn't be able to get bonuses.
Round 1 of performance review went down today. I was mentally and maybe even physically prepared to argue and fight...but...it went the opposite of how it played in my head. Had more accomplishments on my document than last year, my internal references spoke extra highly of me, and in general shit was extra smooth.
This was kind of the pre-game to the main event which is the ranking session, but it looks like it's off to a solid solid start.
So have lagged on trying to learn web dev but in meantime I managed to get that dream entry level job. Aka I got hired at Costco so woo.
Congrats on that job! I've heard as far as retail goes, Costco is that place you wanna be at for pay and benefits?
By Nelo Ice Go To Post So have lagged on trying to learn web dev but in meantime I managed to get that dream entry level job. Aka I got hired at Costco so woo.
Yeah, congrats. Costco pays well.
Thanks guys and yeah Smokey Costco is absurd with all the benefits. They a pay like $11.75/hr starting and if I stayed for x amount of years I could get up to $20+/hr depending on the department. There's also bonus checks and some other stuff I'm probably missing. I got insanely lucky and applied when they actually needed help. So rather than seasonal, I'll be regular part time. That means after 180 days I'll get actual insurance!.
https://www.costco.com/benefits.html ;
So far I'm thinking I'm gonna hold onto this job for dear life until I refocus myself and get back on the programming train. Especially since I'm not about to go back to school and waste even more money and time. There's so many alternative ways to get into the tech field without the need of a degree.
Besides that Costco seems like great place to work. Their turnover rate is ridicously low. So it wouldn't be the worst option to stay working there and move up. Trying not to get too comfy though. I even told them in my interviews that I'm teaching myself stuff programming with an eye towards that as a future career. Was worried they would only want me as a lifer, but I think that impressed them more than anything. I did leave the option open that I also wouldn't mind staying as another potential career.
Also I swore I'd never work retail again after last year but Costco is the one place I'll gladly make the exception. I'm still in shock they called me for an interview a day after applying. Costco def seemed like one of those impossible jobs to get unless you knew someone since they take care of their employees and again their turnover rate is insanely low.

Still makes some bit of sense. I know families in which the nieces/nephews are just as old or older than their aunts/uncles.
Still, after consolidation, estimated monthly payments adds up to $200/mo for the first two years. Got dayum. Looks like we'll be cutting off cable forever.
CORRECTION: Wife came home from work to remind me that we took a few additional loans during the struggle years. Hard times raising a family of 5 on a grad student fellowship. So...50K.
My church friend is engaged to the chick I had a slight crush on in college. It didn't work because I was not a member of the church. Years later I become a member and the second thing she does is tell me it wouldn't work despite me never hitting on her. Long story short, I become friends with her now fiancee prior to them going out. FYI, he told me this four months ago and I gave him props then.
My sleep schedule is all types of fucked because I couldn't get to sleep until 6 AM. Slept for six hours stayed awake for two hours and went to sleep for 6. Now I have to figure out how to go to sleep again within two hours or I'm fucked permanently.
What y'all up to? We need a podcast. Who's down for a podcast?
The reason why I'm trying to get everything lined up is because A) I drive a 1999 Camry to work everyday which has 300k miles on it and I am considering buying a new car on my own terms rather than waiting for the Camry to kick the bucket, and B) I want to get a true picture of what our debt looks like because we are about 75% sure that we want buy a house...in Michigan...as gross as that sounds.
If I didn't have my own family like some of yall, I would move back in with my parents in Alabama and hit the reset button. That way I could be 30 min in any direction and it the Gulf of Mexico. I NEED TO SEE WATER TO LIVE

I'm in that "grown man" phase right now where I'm trying to develop a plan,
A) get college debt in order/begin the process of paying them off after up to 13 years of deferment (on some of them)
B) seriously investigate what buying a new(er) car looks like. I make too much to be driving a 300k mile timebomb. It's a good car that doesn't give me any problems, but I don't know anyone who isn't struggling who voluntarily drives a 300k mile car. When it "fake" broke down a week or two ago, the stress that it caused was immense compared to a car that would have been under warranty/newer. I was thinking I'd have to replace an alternator!
C) Get pre-approved to buy a house. This would take a lot of stress off of us because we've been so transient throughout our marriage. Our ten year anniversary is next month, and we've moved five times. That effing sucks, and it would be nice to find a place to call home. Besides, the housing market is on the bounce and by this time next year, we're going to be paying ridiculous prices for a home if we wait.

I agree. Fighting back the vanity/pride/elitism factor has been no small task. I was talking to one of my employees and they suggested getting something cheap like a Chevy Cobalt if I want something new, and pay for almost entire thing in cash. At first I was like "eww," but that might not be a horrible idea.
