It can happen to LA too if it ever becomes a hotbed for an industry boom of some sort.
There's no turning back now.
Current landlord wants us to pay $700 even though our lease says that if we exceed the income threshold, we are free to leave. Incoming legal battle or I just pay the $700 and call it a day? Stay tuned.
We're a non-profit - and I'm passionate about what I do - so I'll put up with some shit. Pile on more work/roles? Whatever. Refuse to compensate me for the added work load and responsibilities? Fuck you but aight. Changing my work hours, despite knowing that I'm in the middle of a school quarter? Ya'll can suck on shit. I was forced to drop my course load, taking W's for the quarter. "We didn't hire you to attend school." - especially when the underlying reason is to accommodate my superior's school schedule (he's going for a doctorate)? That's some straight villainous asshole shit.
I legit look forward to the look on my boss' face when I tell him I'm peacing out the door. Like - I think I might be tempted to drop my pants and jerk it to that look of horror.
My wife starts her job on Monday. She works during the day, and I at night. We will hardly see each other on a consistent basis for the foreseeable future.
The struggle is real.
I know that's random, but I find it is so odd how job sites want my facebook and twitter and whatnot.
By etiolationThe heavy integration of social media into worklife feels like a mistake to me. Private and professional life shouldn't be the same thing.

This is why you need multiple email addresses to go with multiple fake accounts. I've got 100 email accounts covering all the states just in case an employer asks for social media information. Never mix social media and professional life anyway because it's bad in the short and long-term.
I suppose you could boil it down to income minus expenditure.
I'm in a very pleasant place right now in respect of buying a nice new flat and my fiancee in Canada is moving to England come July.
So in many respects things are going well. I'm a lawyer that's moving up the chain and things in my personal life are lining up. But I'm not stupid enough to pretend everything's going to be stable forever.

I suppose I haven't worked in the "private sector" long enough to observe the dangers of not maintaining a double-life. Some forms of activism is carried out through social media (such as "It Gets Better"), and activism looks good on resumes in the "public sector."
Anyway, got a 3% raise today. Yay?

On the one hand I agree entirely, but on the other I kind of get it though. Nobody wants that nasty surprise when it turns out an employee is a raving Twitter racist and your company starts catching headlines one morning.

Apparently I'm hypoglycemic and only found this out tonight as I damn near blacked out at the gym. Doc told me my health is failing rapidly but the feds owe money. Is there anything more peaceful than the late night gym session?
By Zero Tolerance Go To Post Boss offered me what is considered the preferred start time at my job, and the mos important position among the supervisors. It's an obvious slam-dunk for a career move, but I fel that it would be fatal to my personal life. I would come in at 2PM and get off at a 11PM. Right now, I work from 7PM-4:30 AM, which means I see my kids after they come home from school for a few hours, and I'm gone. I see my wife for maybe 30 min because she gets home at 5:30. With the new position, I'll take my kids to school, and have the day to myself until I go to work. By the time I get home, my wife will already be in bed asleep for the next day, and I'll have to get up by at least 7AM to make breakfast for the kids. But in terms of work, I'll be that much closer to becoming a manager. Decisions, decisions.
That's a tough one.... how long would you likely have to hold the supervisor position before you become a manager?
By Zeus Ex Machina Go To PostThat's a tough one.... how long would you likely have to hold the supervisor position before you become a manager?
A the complex where I'm working? I could apply to a manager position NOW, but it's in a department that nobody wants. And I would move from hourly to salaried, which is an "L" as far as I'm concerned. I'm "locked in" the location where I am now (Nowhere, Michigan) until September 15th-ish. Then I can become a Free Agent, and possibly move (back) to Lansing or Grand Rapids.
I'm more looking at the prospect of padding the 'ol resume in terms of taking on more responsibility.
I need to ask my kids if they would prefer to see me in the mornings or in the afternoons. TBQH, the offered position seems like a big win for me, but would put more pressure on my wife. She would effectively become a single mother, having to pick up the kids from the Y at 5:30 after she gets off from work, still has to cook, and puts them to bed at night. There was a time when we did something similar, when I went to work at 4:30 in the dark year of 2013 (worst year of my life) when I was working fast food.
By Furyous Go To Post Would you ever sacrifice $42,000 a year to move? I just made the decision to voluntarily move to Portland at my own expense if offered this positionat Cadmusfor $42,000 below the averageresearch analystsalary in order to leave my current situation. What kind of apartment can i find in Portland for $1100 a month? Salary negotiations FUCKING SUCK. If I don't land this gig I'm going to be pissed off. Even typing out a loss of 42K pisses me off but fuck it I need to get out of here ASAP.
This is going to sound weird but you're seriously better off looking for a house/room to rent rather than an apartment. The price is so much better it's worth it.
$1100/mo will take you pretty far in an apartment. You'll find something good no problem. Maybe not downton super nice highrise nice (that's like $1500-1750/mo) but you can do shit for $1100/mo.
I know because my first apartment was $1100 (with parking) and I made $42,000/mo a year after graduation in a nice area.
Also agree on subleasing from someone in a house.
met this super gorgeous redhead last night at the bar. apparently she works there. we made out at the end it was pretty nice. it was weird being the last non employee in the bar haha.
i texted her last night afterwards for a bit before passing out, and told her i would text her today. should i actually do so? maybe just a "hey whats up how are you feeling?" kinda thing?
edit: we made plans to go out sunday night after shes off work
edit2: i feel i should mention that i made an arrested development joke and she got it!! also she loves parks and rec and archer. based on last night she's perfect. i was drunk however. haha.

Did you go out alone or with friends? Either way, good for you. Those moments are the best as far as meeting people.

Yeah was out with friends but they left and went to another bar. I forget why I stayed behind (not because of her), but I'm glad I did.
After calculating things in my head I've come to the conclusion that somehow it takes me 45 minutes less time to get to Seattle than Portland. However, Seattle's cost of living makes Portland look like Lima compared to Seattle's New York.
Who's with me in taking the Peter Parker approach to hollaing at corporations? If I holla at enough corporations someone will allow me to be great. It's like that one time in college I spent time reinforcing my stellar confidence by talking to everyone. I was in the club kissing babies talking about he looks just like you! If you talk to enough women at a enough events someone is going to give you a good report and you will GTD (get them draws) at some point. In this case, someone cutting me a good set for life check. First chance I get I'm knocking up the CEO's daughter and forcing my way into some Koch money, but that's another story for later.
Ranking season at work. Most fun time of the year. Wish they'd get rid of this BS.
How long do yall usually stay at jobs? Some people my age have quit and moved on to other places. I've thought about it but to be honest, but the company I work for is hard af to get in. From older people that have been in the game, unless you are top tier at what you it's very tough to land. All of the execs etc have been promoted from within the company. They mostly recruit from college and then try to keep you till retirement. That's what happened with me. I was able to land an internship, which if you got that far it meant you were 90% guranteed a full time offer if you didn't fuck up, and that's what happened.
4.5 years later still here. I don't even have anything out on LinkedIn or similiar sites but I dunno. I've never really been a job hopper, how do ya'll approach it?

Not going to lie - it really depends on the field.

True. From what I hear my company does carry a good amount of weight on a resume. But guess I'm a bit afraid of putting myself out there. When I was in HS my neighbor got fired because his company found his resume out on a site, and it was a wrap. That's stuck with me, but maybe it's different in today's social media world?
You've been there too long. I was at my last job a good year or two too long and it hurt me because I believed in the goodness of the CFO or some shit that decided payraises for the grunts weren't justifiable but promotions of VPs to SVPs was.
Really?
They consider 0-5 years new hires / early career employees lol. I also need to wait until 5 years for benefits reasons, but after that I'm thinking I may start putting myself out there. But it does get me a bit shook thinking about it.

I'd like to think times have changed but I dunno. I don't see the big deal really, and I may just be paranoid. In addition to the 5 year thing, I like to be stable. Wondering if I'm some kind of anomoly for my age group.
I'm sitting here feeling out my report for the ranking cycle, what I did etc. And then I remember I had an issue with my supervisor last year. I usually flip the corporate switch when I walk into work. One day my supervisor's tone had me feelin some type of way. It had been building for a while, but I kept cool. Then in a one on one meeting he said something and that switch flipped off.
So now I'm like I bet this motherfucker tries to get me back, and what better way than in ranking. That's how these thoughts came about, sorry if it seems extra random lol.
