By LFMartins86 Go To PostWork sent me to the smallest island of the archipelago, less than 500 people live here.
I am staying at house where are rooms to rent, the owner leaves on the house below.
He picked me up at the airport, showed me to my room and gave me the key to my room.
I asked about the key for the outside door and he told me not worry because that door is always open.
This is a door that leads directly to the street and the guy leaves it open with access to 4 other rooms completely open and with TVs in them.
Kind of crazy that there are still places where people live like this, feeling completely safe.
Went to the firemen's bar to eat and watch the Champions League matches on a projector.
It wasn't a huge place, it had about 30 people there and then I realized that more than 5% of the population of the island was on that bar.
Walked around a lot as didn't have much to do and this is just a cute little place. Very small streets, the doors don't have numbers because the mailman knows everyone, it's like something out of the past.
I wished my lens had arrived before I left to came here, I would love to take some photos with my camera here but I am stuck with my phone.
This is the most western habited place in Europe, just 4000km from North America. Lisbon is nearly 2000km away from here.
Damn this some Uncharted 4 epilogue shit.
Life goals tbh

That's pretty damn cool, would love to live like that for a year or two, more if I had my family there with me.

Whats the wifi situation like?
On the real though, the first opportunity I get to escape this island full of sly, racist, duplicitous reprobates, I'm taking it.

Crushed a phone interview at least. Got a follow up tomorrow along with another interview. Still got a job fair today at 3.
I should 100% quit but my ancestors won't let me.

I got out of my first job after realising that it's not what I wanted. I disliked the environment too. There was definitely a siege mentality regarding the company against... every other company, related government bodies in the industry.
The company is still successful... for now. I'm close friends with some of them there, but the others in other places have nothing but bad things to say about them.

Just asked a whisky cola in the only bar here. The barwoman stared at me like I was asking a very complicated drink.
She had to ask the owner who it was made, the owner said whisky and Coca Cola.
She then asked me if I wanted ice with it, took out a whisky glass and went downstairs to get ice.
The owner went back behind the bar and replaced the glass for a long drink glass.
The girl returned and was puzzled for a few seconds.
The owner had to go and explain to her step by step how to make it.

The bar has a DJ controller worth 1.200€, can't fit more than 35 people and has no room to dance.
I still use a 300€ controller and that was good enough for 80 to 90 people.
most places around here have coke already on a hose, wonder what she thought that was for if they have the same...

Nah, even in my island which is 100 times more populated, no bar has coke on hose and we used to have lots of Americans due to the US American base on the island.
I have to say, Americans don't behave well when they go out at night, at least when they are overseas.
I remember one night I was leaving a bar and a group of Americans was trying to get into a strip bar, one of them banged way too hard on the door and the bouncer was moving in on him.
I had to defuse the situation and calm both sides, I remembered the bouncer that the Americans spend a lot of money and that the guys would behave.
The soldiers were very thankful and wanted me to go with them and pay me drinks but that's not my thing.
They even offered to pay me money for the help but I said that I had a funny story to tell after all that and that was payment enough for me.
The auto loops to 2, 4, 8 and 16 beats is such a godsend and allows me to quickly find the perfect loop to mix the tracks.

I used to laugh because they would be badmouthing the place openly on the street because they thought no one spoke English.
Recently there's been a debate about the consequences of having the base on the island as the part of the island where they were has a higher than usual rate of cancer.
I have talked about this before as my mother used teach not far from the base and she died of cancer at 39 so it's always in the back of my head of there was any correlation.

Interviewed somebody today for a position on our team. Within 10 minutes it was a hard no from me. How can you not answer anything of substance but your resume is five pages long? I'm not sure how he got past the phone screening tbh.
Other folks talked to him and when we all got together it was a unanimous "no", but dude was still in the building going through the rest of the interview process (whole thing is about 8 hours). It was wild to me. I guess you gotta shoot your shot.

Y’all don’t have a queue to cut the interview short and dead it? Or set it up with multiple stages?
Or is it somebody you flew in?

Tech industry is special ... 8 hour review processes are stupid
I feel like we're half way through the "why have I stuck with my same job I should branch out and improve" cycle.

He came in from another city. I didn't get to him until later in the day, after lunch. There were some pretty easy softball questions that were supposed to be warm ups, and he didn't really get past those. There were whole sections I had to cross out on my page, because he said he didn't have much experience with the subject....despite indicating the opposite on his resume.

Likewise.
Personally, I would want a complete interview. Get a chance to sit in front of more people. Especially if I traveled and doubly so if long interviews are common in the industry.
It’s when companies ghost you rather than inform you of your standing in the process that irritates me
Willing to bet Smokey is treated better here than at any company you’ve ever worked for

I once interviewed a dude who said on his resume that he taught Java at a community college. Our position was .NET, not Java, but I asked some sort of softball Java/C# comparison question as an icebreaker. He flatly said "I don't know Java."
Wasn't hired.

Lol @8 hour interview what are you going to learn in hour 7 that slipped you in hour 2? Sounds like torture for everyone involved.

You often get feedback if you didn't get the job, though the feedback itself isn't always the most useful. If you go through the whole process though you can get more comprehensive feedback, which makes it easier to sort out the loose shit and ace the next interview.

Basically every hour youre meeting with a different person from each of the IT groups in the company. Then the CIO to finish the day.
is this 8 hr interview preliminary or pretty much the "youre almost hired, we just need to make sure you're not a fucking weirdo" step
