By domino Go To Postsooooooo i just got the medical bill for my ER visit from my wreck a few months ago…yiiiiiiiiiiikes
FIFTY SIX HUNDRED AMERICAN US DOLLARS
all they did was clean me up, give me a CT scan basically against my will (i knew i was fine), stitch me up and take up like 6 hrs of my evening for like 30 mins of actual work.
thank god i got insurance because this is fucking outrageous.
By DY_nasty Go To Postmeanwhile, in americaMeanwhile in America buying a house is dirt cheap in so many decent metropolitan area's it's insane to ever consider renting for extended periods of your life.
By DY_nasty Go To Postcleveland doesn't count smhalmost anywhere honestly...
By DY_nasty Go To Postcleveland doesn't count smhAnywhere in Texas is about half of what it costs here. Less than half.
Believe there are many places similar.
Outside Cali and NY most realestate seems ... more than reasonable.
Mortgages are cheaper in most metro areas and you're working towards something. Unless you get f'ed and can't keep up the mortgage payments or you're lucky enough to be able to buy something with cash, and you're set on staying somewhere for quite some time? Just get a home.

Nope. Could be the easiest shit in the world and my mind just goes everywhere but the book. I'd work back to back shifts drafting reports and collaborative spreadsheets for nothing but the satisfaction of doing a good job by own standards. But this shit just feels like putting my chest under a hydraulic press...
Seriously would rather be shot at or 100% alcoholic writing short stories that other people love but make me vomit if I read it myself.

There's a reason housing is expensive here. Everyone wants to live here because good luck having a well paying career in Arkansas.
Changing locations for work on Sunday. Going to use it as an opportunity to pivot my life again like I did the first time. I've been slacking again because of the toxic memories I have associated with this location. Going to start getting my life straight, my work straight and my nutrition straight.
By RobNBanks Go To PostSo pretty much where all the jobs are? There's a lot of well paying jobs in Houston where Smokey is looking and equivalent housing is roughly 10 times cheaper there.

By Kibner Go To PostThere's a lot of well paying jobs in Houston where Smokey is looking and equivalent housing is roughly 10 times cheaper there. There's the risk in Houston in being vulnerable to flooding. When they got hit last year by Harvey, Smokey posted how often they've had to deal with that.
Yeah housing is nice and cheap but do you really want to risk waking up and having to swim to your bathroom?
By DY_nasty Go To PostI thought I could do college againBoy, do I relate to this. I just started my second semester of grad school and half of it feels like busy work. A class I had over the summer 70 per cent group work and the entire thing was like this exercise in how little I'll apply any of the activities to life after I get my Masters. It's so hard to pay attention sometimes because of how inconsequential so much of it feels (minus the $1,600 I'm paying per class).

Do you really want to risk waking up and having to quickly evacuate your house to escape the encroaching wildfire?
So I've spent the first 90 mins of the work day calling insurance and the medical providers back and forth, only to find out the only reason I owe anything (like $3600 of the $5600 i mentioned last post) is because my primary insurance didn't think they were my primary insurance. They still had my parents insurance listed even though I haven't been on their plan for 18 months.
So now I have to wait 6 weeks to find out what, if anything, I owe...
I also have a mega nail in my tire so that will need to be replaced. Probably the whole set at this point.
and here I was planning to buy a Pixel 3 whenever that came out. forget about that.

I've been renting for the past thirteen years.
People saying it's better to rent? God no. With the money I put in, I could already be done with the payments for a 3 bedroom house in Houston.
I've had a fun life and moved around tons, but let's stop the madness. Landlords are scum, and I'm all the poorer for having dealt with them.
At some point, just buy. Not even a debate.

if you're looking at just the house payments, maybe
but all the work that actually goes into a house? i'd much rather go back and forth with a dick landlord instead of looking at the whole set of issues home owning brings. maint costs are a whole bitch and guys are kinda glossing over that
talking about earth quakes and flooding, simply leaks in the roof can rock you

It's really not that much compared to rent/mortgage. Not in the same category. And as you rent, you do most of the maintenance anyway.
The only way you end up ahead on renting instead of owning is if you’re disciplined enough to add what woulda be an equity chunk of your mortgage payment into some sort of a fund. If you’re not disciplined enough to do that, you won’t end up ahead of a property owner and that considers maintenance

i'm either paying someone to do it, doing it myself, or essentially hoping for the best. as is i'll probably buy a nice condo in a shit area of dc, wait til gentrification reaches its peak, then cash out for something in the middle of nowhere
i've never so much as changed a light bulb in any place i've ever rented lol
By DY_nasty Go To Posta nice condo in a shit area of dcDC prices are insane. 3500$ a month for a 3 bedroom house in Petworth 4 years ago, and it wasn't a bad deal (was sharing it, obvs). I imagine it's gotten worse. Public transportation is not that good either in truth. What's gentrifying now? Is the SE a lost cause or will it get nicer?
I rent because I have no deserve for a detached home in the burbs then driving 30-1hr to get to work/entertainment/school, and condos are hilariously expensive. I also throw money into a fund and I own long term stocks so I'm already ahead of most working class/middle class citizens that own a home or rent.
Honestly the whole suburban life looks like it invites depression unless you're married and have kids that help balance it out, I'll pass.

And yeah, its getting worse lol. I was telling some other guys that DC is basically becoming a city of Jetsons. Some of the older, more run down areas that can't quite be paved over end up having upper scale properties built up all around them and sometimes right on top. I don't believe a millionaire should ever be in arms reach of a guy on section 8 - but if that's the cost of moving people out of here they don't seem to care.
Right next to the BP headed towards Petworth you'll see legit trap houses on one side of the street and brand new condos on the other
By DY_nasty Go To PostRight next to the BP headed towards Petworth you'll see legit trap houses on one side of the street and brand new condos on the otherYeah, to the untrained eye, 14th st and Georgia Ave made no sense. Felt super poor, was actually super rich.

Texas has several area's of good paying large corporation hubs. I believe Dallas and Houston are good.
And as Kibner Pointed out, Cali has earth quakes, wasn't NYC evacuated because of a cyclone less than a decade ago? And it regularly gets snowed in?

Yeah, I did my masters in my 30's. Very different experience.
Doing a post grad was much better than going back and doing an undergrad, atleast most people were 25+. Many around that 30 mark.
It's also amazing being able to flatly say to a lecturer when they try the "in the real world" lines about group work, "I fired people for that in our office. Not i would, i did. So no."
By giririsss Go To PostUmm, So i guess all the other cities in america are just a fallacy?Everywhere has issues but honestly there's more than just natural disasters to consider. A lot of Texas is one giant flood plane and it ices over a lot. There's schools, who your neighbors might be, whom you might want to be close to (fam), even shit like "do I have the right to end my life if I get a terminal disease" and legal weed. States are all diff.

Group work in college was just trash. The prof would choose groups too so I ended up with someone who was just so unreliable and useless more often than not. Then they'd also try to play that off as an abject lesson too but bitch you're grading me based on all this criteria and some of it will be vacant or halfass because you gave me a person who slacks the fuck off and does bare minimum.

Luckily the groups are shuffled every 4 weeks and the grading is very lenient. Show up on time and don’t mess about and you get 10/10.

Not really, but I'm also adult enough to stand up for my self and not let lecturers stand behind empty throwaway bullshit lines. So if by a Cunt you mean, adult, sure. But i was paying about $2,000 a subject, i'm expecting a lot more effort than "you'll get people like that in the real world".
