By rodeoclownSo I've never really shared my life with y'all before (well, I talked to Dy and Adam a bit playing Halo 4 once. I remember, I remember all.), but tomorrow, I go back to school. Well, I graduated college back in May with a Bachelor's in journalism that I didn't really want. I realized like halfway through my junior year that I didn't like journalism and that all the kids on the school paper were unbearable. I told my advisor, but she told me to just keep going because I could make it work. And she was a god damn liar, but c'est la vie.
I spent the last eight months working jobs I didn't like, just generally being miserable, so about two months ago, I started to feel like I should go back to college and maybe get a degree I didn't find worthless. So after some real soul searching, I met with an advisor, told her my plans, she signed off, and here I am.
(The day after I registered, I quit the job I was working, real smooth like, by just calling up and telling them I wasn't coming in that day or ever again. I don't regret it for a second.)
Once more unto the breach. So, uh, wish me luck, I guess?
Studying an area that you're genuinely interested in makes work/study much easier to deal with.
Congrats on pulling the pin though, it's sometimes the hardest thing to do.
Well, I hope you find something you do enjoy, RC.
The girl I like who was going to be in my class this semester isn't in my class this semester, noooooo.
Hopefully I see her around campus in the next few days.

well, all the best on making the switch. i've been leaning more towards the civ stuff since i got to hawaii actually. i was absolutely set on whoring myself out to the military until i had a resume good enough for high end contracting but now i'm kinda like... i don't know. i'd be cool with just learning japanese at this next school and doing storyboards or interviews til i get old and fat.
seeing some of you guys make switches makes me feel easier about coming off the pedal so to speak

I meet a lot of them at my local yard house when my friend invites me to chill with her after shooting. I tried to fuck Siri a few weeks ago. Then I got yelled at by my friend for trying to fuck her friends.
Siri's beautiful when she doesn't have porn makeup on.

I've been working in finances for 11 years and doing my own consulting for the last 6 and I'm over it. Just mentally checked out. Thing is, I haven't looked for a job in 11 years. It feels what I imagine dating might be like after an 11 year relationship. I don't really know what I want to do and don't know where to start.
Anyone know any legit career advisers that can really take some time to flesh some things out with me?

I'm pretty sure that's not it. Want something different. I can always do what I do now on the side in the future if I miss it. But I doubt it. The motivation just isn't there and it's definitely not a case of being overworked. That's happened before, this doesn't feel like that.

Neither,
I used to do mortgages, retirement planning using ULI plans, and I've been focusing on debt solutions. I've always just worked with individuals - usually middle to upper middle class. I used to do financial planning, but I'm over the entire area of financial sales in general.

What don't you enjoy about it if you don't mind me asking? I'm in planning myself, going for my series 7 pretty soon. Is it just how much is demanded of you? Are you disillusioned with the industry? What got you into the field originally?

There's a lot to unpack I guess. I got into it due to the mortgage boom 11 years ago and stuck with it since. But it was never my passion, just something that was an exploding industry and I had the right connections. Not that I'm disillusioned with the industry, just that I know myself better now, just having hit 30 than I did when I was 19 or 25.
I know what my strengths and weaknesses are, and I know that constantly prospecting/selling/networking isn't how I want my life down the road. Unless it's business to business sales that's played at a much higher echelon than working with consumers will usually get to. And even then, it's got to be something I'm super excited and passionate about.
The idea of selling VUL's and Mutual Funds to people for the next 30 years isn't appealing to me anymore.

Makes sense. I never saw myself doing this either but I got into insurance when I started selling health insurance at Blue Cross leading up to the ACA and then after moving to Atlanta this opportunity arose. At 35 it's the most challenging thing I've ever done but I love it. Watching my parents not have a plan in place and being forced to work at age 71 really lit the fire under my ass. I'm also starting to work with business owners and professionals so it's a different market if you will but yep, I understand needing to love what you do. I wish you luck man with finding your passion.

Do you want to walk like a 60 year old when you're 30? My fucked up knee and lower back problems steam from airborne. Shit is hard on you. My uncle could barely lift his leg before he died because of all the stress of 20+ years of dropping out of planes.
DY, you falling out of airplanes sounds like the worst idea of all fucking time. Your body would be Oden-tier within 2 weeks.

"Having a plan" for retirement is a luxury, man. As much as we see those commercials about financial planning and such, it only comes into fruition for a select few.

"Having a plan" for retirement is a luxury, man. As much as we see those commercials about financial planning and such, it only comes into fruition for a select few.
That's actually a mistake which our industry is partially responsible for. Retirement is a word but one thing everyone should be able to do is make sure their family is taken care of and that they're planning ahead to not become a weight on their kids and grandkids. In the 1940s there were 15 workers for every 1 retiree, now there are 3 workers for every retiree which means the cost of retirement is going to be that much greater. There are also laws in place called filial laws that allow companies to sue the children of parents who receive long term care.
My parents are 70 years old and will not qualify for long term care but they would have 5-10 years ago. They simply pushed it off becuase they felt they had time. People who are 25-30 think they have forever to plan for the future and before they know it they've lost the opportunity. I don't attempt to make people rich, that's not my job. My job is to help people become wealthy which simply means they're able to make a difference in the lives of others and not feel as if they're dependent on others/government when they hit age 60-70. This idea that planning for retirement takes a specific amount is wrong.
By MorisQuit my job yesterday…
Didn't you just get this job after looking for a pretty large amount of time ?
My supervisor wasn't shit.
Didn't train me much at all and expected me to know info that was never relayed to me. Basically held me responsible for not being trained.
Spoke with HR this morning, she said she thinks my supervisor may be the problem (I just laughed and nodded) turns out I'm the 4th person at that position in 12 months.

I'm curious, what area in finance do you specialize in? Is it financial planning? investing? What markets do you consult?
Neither,
I used to do mortgages, retirement planning using ULI plans, and I've been focusing on debt solutions.
You're certainly more versed in this stuff than I. My parents were always super-secretive about finances. They have their cars and house paid off (NOBODY I know has paid off their 3 bd/2B 1800 sq ft 2 car garage + backyard shed corner lot house except my parents) and I don't know a darn thing about how they managed to do that working in law enforcement besides always telling me "we're broke; we can't afford it" when I wanted stuff. But if I ever really needed something like new tires or a down payment on a car, here they come with the $$$ if I ask.
In other words, I don't know jack. After nearly a decade of raising a family of 5 as a pauper (also known as Ph.D. student), at 31 I'm just now getting a job that includes real health (and LIFE!!!) insurance. I also have a 401k that my old boss told me to put at 10%...the default is at 5%, and I kinda don't wanna put it to 10% until my wife can (if she ever) finds full-time work.
tl;dr version: I have lived from check-to check-since getting married and moving out of my parents house. I have no idea how to plan for tomorrow when today presents its own problems.

I've done the check-to-check for quite some time. Experienced the marriage and having kids. It really does put constraints on one's ability to plan for the future but here's the thing, having a plan in place that you're working towards one dollar at a time is much better than waiting until you feel you're reading to do it big time. I can't tell you how many people I've sat down with who have kids and a family while not even having life insurance. It terrifies me to be honest.
Another person I know whose advisor is a colleague of mine has a very successful career and earns a good living. My colleague handles all of this client's planning and advised her to start preparing to sign up for long term care since early-mid 50s is the perfect time to do so. She wasn't interested and said she'll get around to it. Well, five years later she contacted him asking to sign up and upon asking why she is interested now, she told him the doctor recently diagnosed her with a degenerative spinal disease which will have her curled up in a ball within 15-20 years so needless to say she will never qualify for long term care.
Her assets that she's built up which she was planning on using once she reached retirement? Those will be used to pay for her care. This means that she'll have significantly less if any at all to pass down to her kids and grand kids. It will put significantly more stress on her husband. Their lifestyle will become much worse than what they planned for. And if she isn't able to afford said care her kids may be found responsible due to filial laws.
The point being that it's never too early to put a plan in place, even if you won't be able to do as much as you'd like. Also, you may want to think twice about contributing the full 10% to your 401k. Take the free money (5%) match. Realize that 401k is a tax deferred account which grows compounded. Meaning that when you eventually take it out at whatever age you decide to, you'll owe taxes on it at whatever your tax bracket is. In retirement you don't want to have all of your monies in one type of tax bucket, plus you also lose having flexibility and options (try taking money out of your 401k before reitrement age and enjoy the penalty). The other 5% can be put into something that may not be as detrimental to you tax wise.
Not really sure what happened. Had a good time last night BUT like 4 dudes texted her, and she told me she didn't wanna hook up or have a bf at the moment. Not good signs.
Went back tonight, watched the interview, all seemed good. We went and got some food from McDonalds, and started selecting a new movie from Netflix when she got weird and told me to leave. Then s I'm leaving to go to a bar with some friends, she texts me that she had trouble talking about her feelings. I told her that I would not judge her or be mad no matter what she told me and all she said was okay.
So now I'm at a bar having a beer and chillin cuz this is bs.

i don't know how i feel right now (of course i had to order them online because this island doesn't believe in hoops)

Sounds like she is giving u mixed signals and shit test. You did the right thing by saying it was up to her and then go about your business. Yeah it made you feel forlorn but the worse thing you could do is show it to her.
1) you got to stop texting her as much and call her more. Its a lot easier to figure out how a girl feels about you by talking than text.
2) Either she was about to give it up (and she started acting weird because she didn't want to, even though she wanted to), or she is not that into you.
3) Its about time you get a confirmation either way. Don't just ask her though, shit will just end up with you texting each other again. When in doubt I go with my gut (and how much I am willing to spend to hook up with a woman). Either I hit her with the #HOH philosophy and just cut her off. Or I try to impress her enough that she has to admit I would be a good man to date (and by default hook up with). Considering I think you guys would be on your third date next time you go out, I would say fuck it and give it another go.
I would recommend taking her out to some place nice, telling her to dress pretty (you got to dress well yourself to look sharp, and use cologne). Buy her a decent meal (but God help you wallet come prepared to spend), do an activity (billards, karaoke, movies etc) or to a bar for a few drinks (always at a different venue) and then recommending you both go back to your house (make sure its your house) to smoke some weed, drink some thug passion, (IE whatever she is into) and listen to musie (do not say your going to your house to watch movie, movies are lame at the end of the night because of the the time commitment).
If she calls you out on going to your house say "I just like spending time with you, so why end the night now?". If she says "nothing is going to happen" still insist on going to your house because something might happen. Once there continue to talk, smoke, drink, and see where the vibe take you. Ig the plan goes as follows and you guys don't at least make out at some point (or at least she confesses her feeling for you). She's just not into you.
(also always see if she'll let you hold her hand through the date. Maybe between the meal and the activity)
If that happens don't stress it man. Beautiful women are everywhere. Get on Tinder its the defacto hooking up app. If you want to meet girls outside of the internet downtown bars at happy hour, yoga (or any organized exercise class), and Shopping centers (malls, walmarts, etc). I would say take a college class but 23 is college senior territory. You would mostly be dealing with people 18-22 there just based on odds and short term enrollment.
