He was fine in The Nice Guys. Good, workmen like effort.
He's a good actor, but like, on the scale between James Dean and Philip Seymour Hoffman he leans pretty heavily into the former.

You determined this based off of the 3 movies James Dean starred in his short career versus the 2 dozen things Gosling has done?
By s y Go To PostAll he did in drive was stare. Hell, you can swap his performance in drive and a place beyond the pines and wouldnt be missing anything.
Stick to anime. You don’t know anything about acting
Gosling's physical comedy alone in the nice guys is pretty fucking remarkable
You are even worse than elsk
By s y Go To PostGosling was the weakest actor in the nice guys.

Thought he was fine in The Place Beyond The Pines. He's brilliant in Nice Guys and really did a great job in La La Land. Solid in The Big Short and of course The Notebook. I can't remember that George Clooney directed flick though I know he was in there.
Anyone could have done that Drive character though. "I told you, I don't carry a gun.....I drive." :lol

Drive required almost no actual acting. I wasn't convinced he could act but then i saw Nice Guys and he was great in that.
By s y Go To PostI have. Was outclassed by Williams.Well, true but Williams was a force of nature in that one. Amazing movie (Blue Valentine), watched it a few times and it always depresses me.

Half Nelson
Blue Valentine
Drive
Good Guys
The Big Short
La La Land
"No range"
Some of you need to start thinking before you post.
Its not a competition.

Every sentence in this post is worse than the one before it.
Some of y'all acting like I called Ryan Gosling worthless.
He's good! No one denies this. But there are roles he simply shines in and then there are roles that he's perfectly competent in. That's not a diss, just an observation.

That's not what you said though. You said he has no range and compared him to James Dean. It's... ridiculous on so many levels given his output and diversity of genres he's been in.
By LFMartins86 Go To PostThose were fan screenings, the tweets I posted were from the press, completely different situation.fan screenings and the press on a nerdy scifi movie?
practically the same thing
I offfered two extremes and said he was closer to one vs the other. I'm not saying he is actually Steve McQueen or James Dean. I'm saying he's closer to them than to the other end of the extreme.
To me, he's basically Robert Redford if Robert Redford took himself a little less seriously.

Redford has been in some pretty good fucking movies too! There are no winners here. 🙃
Personally, I'd compare Gosling more to Tom Cruise's dramatic roles.

He's a good actor! Like, Brad Pitt's made an incredible career out of being super good in one exact type of role and above average in everything else. Gosling's got more than that, but most actors don't even have one

I showed it to some friends who aren't really into film and they said it was boring and nerdy and turned it off after an hour.

Not really.
The whole Leo Oscar thing was a silly internet meme anyways. It's not like he was ever a clear favorite.
By diehard Go To PostLeo is not great at anything except expressing outrage IMO.Best performance was in Basketball diaries.

By data Go To PostBlade Runner in 2017 is nerdier than Star Trek
No, it is not. Have you not see how the nerds are acting because they got a new Star Trek show?
Blade Runner has more in common with film noir/pulp fiction than typical nerd sci-fi. It's not even liked by nerds because they think it's boring. If Blade Runner is nerdy than so is 2001 or Solaris.
Star Trek is obviously much more nerdier
Star Trek > Star Wars >>>>>>>>>>> Blade Runner > 2001
Blade Runner is "just" a sci-fi film. Not a nerd thing like Star Wars or Star Trek.

Star Trek is just a show adults watch these days
its not really the mega nerd culture thing it once was except to super old farts. its more like twin peaks now.

Yeah people automatically assume anything Sci-Fi is nerd shit. There’s a pretty good line between pop SF shit and stuff like Blade Runner, 2001, and other harder science-fiction
Saw Spiderman Homecoming, a bit disappointing. Peter Parker is incredibly annoying for most of the movie, the twist is ridiculous and Donald Glover is poorly utilised.

Donald Glover is a bad actor. His range is guy that responds to everything slowly and without emotion. That’s it.

He has plenty of emotion in Community. Often the most energetic performer.
I watched all of the first 3 seasons of that show and he was the worst character. Danny Pudi Was the best part.
