Despite getting the co-sign from JK who owns ALL creative rights.
Hermione's race was never clearly said in the books besides frizzy dark hair and being almost brown....

Even if she's white in the book, who gives a shit?
Also I had no idea they were making a sequel in a play format

I can understand some backlash if she said to be white in the books... but the standard of all characters are white unless clearly stated otherwise is a bit sad.
If she was the best during the auditions then good on the producers not to get stuck with the idea that she is white just because of the films.
I saw a GAF thread about will Star Wars make the industry look at casting more black and female leads, and while I don't think the success of the film will make executives change, something like this could. Maybe it will one day lead to a black James bond, an Asian Peter Parker, or other iconic characters being played by a non-white actor.

They're making another HP movie? I mean all the characters have an English accent. Having a black Hermione isn't really out of the norm since there's a ton of black English people.

It seems petty to me considering the source material. If the source material were a drama or the race / culture of the character more important to the plot then it would make sense.

It just seems weird cause I'll think of her as the grill from the original movies. In the same sense that changing the actor who plays any character seems weird.
But yeah, w/e, her race is really unimportant to most of the story.

yeah a bit weird they switched the race,
but if she performed the best in the auditions, then im all for it.
get over it internet people.

People were pissed about the color of Daniel Radcliffe's eyes. Give them a reason to inject some ol' fashioned bigotry in there, and you have yourself a proper shitstorm.
It'll certainly give people some new connotations for 'mudblood'.

one would think fans of a book series that mainly deals with the subject of racism would be more tolerant.
I mean she's a white ginger on every one of the American book covers she is in, so it's not hard to see why people are confused.
I think it's weird choice tbh.

I would not say racism was well handled in the HP books, or an avenue that is sufficiently explored enough to consider it a core theme of the series. The mud blood/magical purity stuff or the house elves. It's basically thrown in with the "being mean to others is bad" standard fare in fantasy novels.
And I will admit it's gonna be weird at first for me to see a black Hermione because my headcanon for that character is pretty much Emma Watson, but I'll get over it within the minute of seeing the black Hermione's take on the character. it'll be interesting to see grown Hermione this way.
