Just got the ending spoiled...so I figured I would post here.
The ending basically sucks in it's execution. It felt like the antithesis of the Halo 2 ending.
At the end of Halo 2 you see Chief riding a ship about to go kick some ass and saying, "Sir, finishing this fight."
This ending has the infinity saying they are going to run "until we know how to fight."
.....not cool 343. Such a set up story for Halo 6 it's not even funny. They could have at least had some interesting dialogue instead of everyone being basically silent.

My thoughts on the full story:
So, Cortana didn't actually cure her own rampancy, she merely survived it and it's now her living state. She's alive and fucking crazy. And she's probably in for a rude awakening when some of those other AIs who have joined her cause don't die and experience those same delusions of grandeur and begin to challenge her. The most interesting thing is that her character evolution is the inverse of Halsey's; she went from dying while trying to save humanity to becoming immortal and holding a gun to everybody's head, while Halsey has gotten old, gone soft and become remorseful. They're two sides of the same fucked up coin for the Chief - the crazy ex-girlfriend and the dying mother, both fighting for his affection. I absolutely love that they both want to kill each other and protect Chief.
The story works, but there's too much wasted space in the middle sections of the game. There's really no reason they couldn't have had a more complete resolution to the Chief's new conflict in the same amount of time other than them wanting to save it for another game. There's a lot of useless story fluff with the Covenant and too many undeveloped characters between both fireteams and the Infinity crew. They should have focused more tightly on that twisted triangle of Chief/Cortana/Halsey instead of further dragging out the ongoing dismantling of the Covenant; we beat them 8 years ago, so who gives a shit. I want the Arbiter to be a central figure somehow, but there's really nothing there that I care about.
Next time it should be one team - either just Blue Team, or a new team completely: Chief, Arbiter, Locke, and (I'm spitballing) give Exuberant a humanoid body of some kind. Make them some kind of space hopping A-Team. And give them a reason to be there aside from helping the Chief shoot stuff - help him emotionally work through the bullshit he's going through with his girl and his mother. The more they focus on these personal relationships, the more operatic it's naturally going to become, which I think is what they want to achieve anyway. They should lean more into the melodrama and drift further and further away from the boring Covenant politics.

By TheHunter Go To PostThat ending is...something.
Since it's the spoiler thread I can elaborate more. I actually really like it. Reminds me of the end of the 2nd Star Wars movie in that it ends on a downer. I felt the story though hit a good junction that they could end it there. Now in the next we have to look forward to how they stop the Guardians, Cortana, etc. Hell will Cortana find redemption or will she not? We'll find out. They handled the ending right too in that they didn't have you as Chief or Locke spouting lines like I'm going to finish this fight then music blaring. You could tell that was the end and there would not be any more for this game.
Just finished the campaign.
Based solely on the advancement of the lore and the state of the universe, and the gunplay and game mechanics that tie those elements together... I'd give H5 a 9.5/10.
The .5 deduction would be from the disjointedness of the first few missions, before the actual story truly kicks in. I have no issues with Team Osiris themselves, and I hope we see a lot more of them, but I wish there had been more setup as to their orders to go after Chief. And to build on that sense of disjointedness, we are dumped right into Chief with Blue Team, with no explanation or context whatsoever. It just felt like two puzzle pieces from different puzzles trying to be smashed together to form a coherent picture.
The first few missions could have been presented in a richer context, and it would have flowed a lot better. That being said, once Locke and Chief square off for the first time, and the real story kicks in... That's where halo 5 really fucking shines.
I am excited for the universe we'll go back to for Halo 6- Infinity on the run, Blue, Osiris, Palmer, Halsey and Arbiter... There's so much plot potential being teased. It's going to be greatly looked forward to for those of us who have wanted the games to really dig deeper into the extended lore and all the weirdness that it entails.
I also hope we run into Exuberant again... She was awesome.

I was seriously beginning to wonder why Roland didn't join with her... maybe it's because he's a "younger" AI?

I don't understand why a bunch of smart AI would join a clearly rampant Cortana, though people vote Republican so I guess I shouldn't be very surprised.

She's suppose to die, doesnt, has an army of Prometheans, says she can cure rampancy. Pretty sweet deal for an AI with a expiration date. Plus, how many humans are going to hate AIs now, and will try to terminate them? May as well join in I suppose.

Especially for the AI's that are on the verge of Rampancy, like the Governor of Meridian. If an AI has a chance to live forever, I'd say many take that.

Yep. It's too tempting to pass on, given humanity's quick actions against AIs that are approaching their exp date. Saints' Testimony is a great parallel to this.
By a zoojoo Go To PostIt's Cortana humming while you see a Halo power on. Pretty hype setup for Halo 6
Just watched it on youtube. I think she straight up is controlling it. I wonder if she will be able to move the Halo rings, like she did the Guardians.
By Ragnarok Flames Go To Post343 still with the Halsey is a monster arc.I really like that Cortana wants Halsey dead and vice versa. it's a nice character dynamic considering their relation to one another.
Just finished it in Heroic deifficulty. Hoooooly shit.

i mean... its different, but they're more alike than i actually want to admit or think about. instead of press button and defend horde, its open area and kill everything (or don't even do that, just run through). the story itself is worse than halo 2 with just less fun stuff. "Next time on halo ball z"
chief wasn't even an active enemy to earth, he was just a simp who went awol with his bros. locke and arbiter had some really cool interactions but... man. the warden made me miss didact. can't believe it
even halo 4 let you do more through the campaign too. the krakken was an amazing let down imo. best part of the game, SUCH a let down. here i am thinking that i'm gonna get to see how the devs cranked up the giant robot vs friendlies stuff from halo 3 and 4 and.... wut. no. WUT???? that was terrible. just awful.
i didn't even know i'd completed the final mission when the credits rolled. sequence felt like something out of spartan assault. i was kinda surprised
im really just kinda shocked. like wow

Exuberant is great! I hope we see more of her in the future.
On the final mission when she's talking about the penultimate guardian, and the music (track 2.07 - "Crypt") kicks in... Ahhh man that shit got me jazzed up. Great voice actress choice.
Gameplay wise H5 is easily the best Halo campaign IMO.
The base gameplay is the best feeling in the series. The level design was superb and made excellent use of the Spartan abilities, big open spaces with loads of room for creativity in how you approach an encounter. There was also a fair amount of variety and I didn't feel like there was a single dud level.
The new prometheans were a ton of fun to fight (almost more than the covenant imo), the retooled Knights felt challenging but not unfair or bullet spongey and the soldiers were awesome. The AI for the most part also seemed pretty good (bar your fireteam).
The presentation for the game was also incredible. The environmental design was just amazing; Sunaion, Genesis, ancient Sanghelios... In my opinion these are some the best looking environments in any game. The music is up there with Marty's work and was well used in conjunction with what was happening on screen. The voice acting and cutscenes were good as well, although I felt like a few of the cutscenes ended a little abruptly.
The story is the only place I can see where people might have some issues. Personally I really enjoyed it, though I can see that it didn't really get going until the second half and I wish we could have played as blue team more.

this is some extremely stale level design. Every single scarab fight > whatever is in halo 5. Every single large marine convoy > halo 5. Every escape/run mission, all of the interior/urban areas, sniper alley >
Halo 5 nailed the fuck out of beachhead/uphill fighting. And it might be their best all around story telling in the series too.
Maybe the co-op kinda sets it apart at first, but I shouldn't be waiting for PvE content like this. Literally finished the game looking for around for an option for Spartan Assault or a raid.
By jem Go To PostYou people are genuinely saying Destiny's campaign was comparable to Halo 5?
about the same, i would say. gave it a 5/10.
Destiny had me hooked longer tho but that was more MP and raid stuff.
At launch, Halo 5 is better without a doubt. No question.
Its just that it should be much, much better imo. That's why I'm so thrown by the whole thing.

Amazes me that people think the two can be compared. Destiny's launch campaign was a train wreck, albeit an addictive train wreck. Halo 5's story is excellent.
maybe its different if you follow the books
(i liked destiny more after i followed their lore outside of the game as well)
still enjoy halo 5, just a bit underwhelmed as i bought the console for it

really isn't.
There's definitely a lot of details in the story that are reliant on players knowing the extended lore. (Why is Blue Team so significant, why are they so devoted to Chief, why does Halsey want John back so badly, why are the colonists so hostile to Osiris, etc) But I think they did a good job of not relying on that too heavily.
Where it fell flat for me was the beginning though. The hype campaign leading up to release portrayed a hunt of epic proportions to find John. There wasn't any information about why he was on the run, or why Osiris needed to take them in. It was supposed to be some big ONI coverup filled with secrets and backstabbing. It created this mystery surrounding the whole situation. But then when the game's story started without that hunt even started, it threw me for a loop.
The hype train could have been brought directly into the campaign by starting the story off with Chief on the run and Osiris going after Blue Team. Instead they started with Osiris bringing in Halsey and then Blue Team going about their mission on Argent Moon, (no significance to the story), which basically scrapped all of the sudo-canon that could have been used from the marketing campaign leading up to release. Rather then a Chief on the run and a mystery surrounding that, the mystery is solved within the 2nd mission. It changed the entire scope and pace of the story.
While I enjoyed the campaign and story (holy shit the gameplay was top notch and intense), I was bummed that we didn't get something that tied into #HunttheTruth.

The setup for the plot was atrocious. This isn't even me bragging, I'm just saying I could've wrote a better paced intro than what was given in the first 4 or so missions.
The actual plot itself was miles better than Destiny and MUCH better than your typical save the universe sci-fi thing. Which it was, but it had more emotion than any of the previous Halo's. This is coming from someone who hasn't read any of the novels, not listened to Hunt The Truth (yes I know I'm lame), nor done any extensive lore research. I have strongly disliked every Halo campaign's story outside of Halo 2's arbiter story arc and ODST. Other than that, the Halo games has the writing of a Saturday Morning cartoon. Halo 4 was just....i don't even know. Terrible.
By no means is Halo 5 a narrative masterpiece, but it's a massive improvement IMO over its predecessors. And I truly do believe that this game GREATLY shines on legendary co-op in the gameplay department. So many options and providing cover fire for your teammates from across the vast arenas, rushing to pick up your downed teammate, finding weapon caches provides a thrill that I feel most Halo co-op campaigns fail to achieve.

just one character in destiny, a shitty one at that (eris morn), is more developed than every new person you run into in halo 5 short of cortana. locke's flatness is only outdone by simp chief. arbiter is cool, but he isn't given nearly enough real shine considering he actually was connected to the player through halo 2. halsey? pff. i wanted to care. Not really. Even in the Bungie era, books were needed to a small(er) extent. Fall of Reach had Linda getting gravely injured, and placed in a cryopod. She was on the Pillar of Autumn in one of the closed cryotube (never explained I n game). Spartan 2s and 3s were absconded with by Halsey in Ghosts of Onyx. Blue Team kinda reunited in First Strike, taking place between CE and 2.
343 may not be doing as great of a job making sure extended media isn't required for the main game, but they didn't start with the hiding of major details in books.
Ok that little addition in the legendary ending is pretty hype to be honest.
