Finally caught up. Ep 3 wasn't very clear and coherent, I was only half paying attention but I had to re-watch it and do some googling to figure out what exactly had happened. Not a great endorsement of the writing/directing.
The last scene was cool I guess, but the story hardly progressed this episode. Frank still returning to his scummy ways to up his funds, Ray finally ghosting on his son, Paul still hates being gay and Ani got hit with a case for shitting where she eats..
Nothing new to really chew on.

Yea the story's progression, especially of the mystery is moving at a snail's pace.

That fucking stare at the end by Farrell? Cranston esque god damn!
First great episode of the season.
First great episode of the season.
Show is starting to gain momentum. Took awhile for the pieces to come together.
I think the show really wanted to ease into the massacre, and have that be the jolt right before things began to settle into a workable direction. However, it probably spent too much time getting to that point and kind of lilted on its way there.

Fell asleep during the episode again. Missed the last 20 minutes.

Good episode, the set up wasn't great so far but climax could be good with how the Ray/Frank relationship is developing.
part of why I watch now is just to hear what completely over the top shit Vaughn is going to say

The mayor dude is so cheesy. Actor doesnt give a fuck.
I really liked this episode and I'm glad their finally making real head way into solving the overarching mystery
Some of you are actually enjoying this?
I'm watching only because I feel like I have nothing else to watch. But the writing has been downright atrocious all season. And the directing is just hard to stomach. Not one actor has remained consistently good. There's so much unbelievable stupidity in this show it's amazing it was created by the same person responsible for an amazing season 1.

Enjoyed the episode. I felt the orgy scene was not timid, but not all that crazy. Yes, lots of nudity and implied sex, but it wasn't freaky or extra creepy. Just top dollar hookers and top dollar johns. It wasn't Requiem for a Dream disturbing.
The escape was the most interesting part.

season has been good ever since the shootout episode, VV has been much better since his unleashing the last couple of episodes
TK's character has been a complete waste of time in every sense--not sure how his existence made it past the editing process

It's weird because McAdams and CF have been really really good throughout. Vaughn has definitely gotten better and more believable after getting over his cast type the first couple of episodes. Even Kitsch, with his limited acting ability has been solid.
So this season being definitively worse is either all on the writing or the directors. Because while no one has been Rusty good, acting hasn't been the problem.
It's also harder to be sympathetic about creep weirdo millionaires dying than innocent young women and little kids. There have been so many people killed that at this point, finding Casper's killer is more of an afterthought. I mean, is anyone emotionally invested in finding out just who killed Casper, like at all beyond an intellectual curiosity?
Whereas the dude in the first season was a straight up monster.

100% on the writing

What's cool about Frank is how good he is at being a gangster despite trying desperately to be legit.
when the Russian dude asks him to know where the gas leak is. And all in one motion, without skipping a beat he points, takes out his gun, and shoots him in the head and just keeps walking. That shit was insane. Same with him coming up with the gas leak idea seemingly right away to clear the place, get his cash, and burn it down was ingenious too. Also, I think his wife is one of the bad guys. She legit looked spooked when she saw skinny blondie dead on the carpet and after Frank walked away from her, you saw her unclench her hands and take a breath. Maybe the reason she's been trying to convince him to get out, is to make the hostile takeover easier.

The dialogue doesn't bug me. I like the bar conversations in the booth. That's the show's best piece of set as well.
I feel narrative structure has been the issue. Like Vahagn said, what is trying to be solved here? I've had trouble keeping track of what the goal is or who each character is at times. Is it the corruption? Is it the money Casper took? Is it a story about the city and location? About past sins?
I think it tries to be all of that but there's too many things to juggle for the viewer of a series that is one and done. It's not like they plan to come back in season 3 with the same characters or story so they resolve everything else. It's a one season series and story written like it plans to be a multi-season syndicated show.

It was an entertaining episode. Death at the end felt like a cheap shot, though. Like come on, how did he know he'd be at that door of all exit doors those tunnels lead to?
And is it me or is Frank's wife stupid hot?
Also, yeah, a little suspicious of her too...but it could just be chalked up to bad directing. She was willing to shoot Velcoro last episode and protect Frank, so I'm not sure if she's a bad guy.

Of course you do.
I love Vince Vaughn. Huge, huuuuuuge fan. But the writers gave him the worst dialogue and some of the oddest scenes. Only the last episode was terrific for him.

Look, if this is "bad" Pizza-man, sign me up for season 3. Anytime you're getting legit actors putting in great performances, I can deal with a little convoluted storytelling or a cheesy line here or there.
Also, Rachel McAdams shattered her type cast. Vince Vaughn, not so much, but she's not going to be stuck exclusively in romcoms anymore.

what? you don't appreciate lines like "blue balls, in your heart" ?

Noticed they said this in OITNB as well :lol
Worst lines by some distance was that one above about prefiguring Caspere. Genuinely gobsmackingly awful.
I laughed at this line too from Frank in the recent episode:
That is literally "Tell me how much you want from me" :lol
why doesn't anyone speak like a normal person on this show
Please, articulate the percentage you'd require in order to transact with me.

Just saw episode 7 and seriously the dude magically knew where Woodrugh would surface? Such bullshit.
By rossonero Go To PostJust saw episode 7 and seriously the dude magically knew where Woodrugh would surface? Such bullshit.
Yea, that's probably not what happened.
The head cop dude wasn't killed, only hit over the head and knocked down and his weapon taken. Before getting in the building, that one other dude warned Woodrough that he had eyes all over him, and he only went down one sewer tunnel entrance.
Either they had those entrances cordoned off anyway (knowing they were dealing with a trained killer) or the head cop dude got up and called the killing dude.
Woodrough was too eager to get signal and call his buddies. He should have kept running a mile or two down before coming up.
I couldn't be bothered to research or learn their names on purpose.
I think the biggest issue with this season is that there's a) too complex of a corruption scandal/conspiracy happening that b) spans too many people. The plot setup and the plot devices are really hard to keep track of. Vaughn's dialog is also ridiculously bad. It's like they tried to fill the gap of oddball dialog quotes left over from Rust without the actual cadance and meat of why Rust speaks the way he does.
Rust didn't speak as much as he was quoting other literature and ideas. He was simply explaining the universe through his eyes and the knowledge he acquired through his lifetime. Simian speaks the way he does because the writers want to be clever.
