Is this game worth buying on PS4? I got some free time coming up again... I REALLY hate how fragmented most of the extra stuff is but if its good *shrug*
By DY_nasty Go To PostIs this game worth buying on PS4? I got some free time coming up again... I REALLY hate how fragmented most of the extra stuff is but if its good *shrug*I'm really enjoying it. Gameplay is great and I like the batmobile/tank mobile stuff so far.
Looks like I'll spend more than 25 hours on so it was worth the 60 bucks.
But Jesus Christ this game is gorgeous.
I'm not proud of myself.
My quick review of the game is this: If you've played the three previous games in the Arkham series, and are familiar and enjoyed their gameplay mechanics, Arkham Knight is a 2 star game out five or a low 6 out of 10.
However, if this is your first taste of Arkham Batman then it's highly recommend that you give it a go. Solid 4 out of 5 or high 8 out 10. You should then play through the other three games to compare. They're far superior to this outing which greatly impacted my enjoyment.
Arkham Knight, as Batman, changes and does little to nothing new to the core gameplay that made the previous games so memorable to play through. In fact, Rocksteady have actually elected to remove the gadgets and their abilities you earned as the Batman during Arkham City for you to re-earn and acquire all over again in this new game! They've even hidden one of them (Mr. Feeze's ice blast) as a nice little hidden treat for you to go and stumble upon--or not--and re-upgrade with the points you earn by completing missions and side quests. How fun...
Outside of the main Arkham Knight/Scarecrow mission the supporting super villains are about as throw away as it gets when it comes to including characters to shit on. They add nothing to the game. Their quests amount to nothing. And one in particular is so bad that it's hard to imagine a room full of professional game developers writing off on its inclusion. Again, this is another case of the previous games influencing my opinion here as they easily handled this aspect of the series much, much better.
The big addition for the series is obviously the Batmobile. The vehicle which doubles as a super mobile tank is quite literally as integral to the game as the Batman himself. The tank is stuffed into the most mundane aspects of gameplay that it's hard to believe Bats was able to make it to this point in the series without its assistance. Simple tasks such as pulling down walls (previously done with the Bat Claw) to expose new areas require the tank to move into position and latch onto a glowing hook. The thing is used in every imaginable way of the game that it pains me to even go into further detail. It's woven into every single meaningful point of their narrative. You won't go one single relevant mission without using this fucking thing in one way or another.
And the another is the combat of the aforementioned tank.
Jesus. Fucking. Christ. How many one dimensional drone tank battles does it take to get to the center of a Gotham insane asylum? Think of a number and then multiple that number by seven and that'll give you half as many as this game is going to throw at you by the time you reach 100% completion. It's boring and borderline laughable design that is intrusive to the point where the game has more in common with a Twisted Metal mobile game than a Batman beat em' up. It's that bad and poorly implemented.
Now having said that, the good and enjoyable facet of the Batmobile is in its straightforward use as a vehicle to maneuver around the streets of Gotham. Riddler races and puzzles often require the Batmobile, but unlike the tank battles, these are a clever and practical use, that while also overused, feel more in-line with the series than the outright combat. These puzzles are fairly enjoyable and break up the zip line gliding that was introduced perfectly in Arkham City. Breaking with square is a hassle, but the car itself barrels through everything in its way that you'll likely do more damage to Gotham as the Batman behind the wheel, than the criminals rioting on its streets.
And what lovely looking streets they are. The games strongest appeal is easily in its presentation. Running on a custom modified Unreal 3 engine, the series is known for doing justice to the look and vibe of the universe, but Arkham Knight takes things to new heights. Rain that pours throughout the games entire campaign has a weight to it that is quite easily the most impressive use of liquid I've ever seen in a videogame. From the way it collects on Batman himself as he glides through the night sky, to the puddles you'll plow through in the streets, all of it looks absolutely amazing and feels very current. Leon lights from the Chinatown district bounce and radiate off windows and through the rain that gives everything a very lived in feel. The waves that crash on the docks and shores of the section of Gotham were the game takes place also resemble something that needs to be seen to understand. It really is a beautiful game.
Music is again put to good use as Nick Arundel and David Buckley return to score the games soundtrack for a third time. The orchestral highs and lows are perfectly implemented to give the game a very AAA refined sound. That quality rolls over to the voice acting--which is again spot on--with one actor in particular standing out as the games scene stealer.
The narrative turns out to be rather surprising at it's climax. It worked for me and felt like a good bookend for the series and will allow Rocksteady to move on to something new, though I fully expect more Batman from another studio. However, the identity reveal of the Arkham Knight was awful and not subtle at all. Not that it didn't make sense in the scope of their story, it just wasn't presented in a very thought out or thought provoking way which is unfortunate for a unique character that was designed specifically for the game.
So those are my feelings after about 25 hours of playing Arkham Knight. There's a lot to like if you're a fan of the series, but this game in particular has a lot to hate too. So much so that nearly half of it could have been outright eliminated and the experience would have been stronger for it.
Batgirl DLC drops on the 14th July for season pass owners and a week later for everyone else at $6.99. If the Harley DLC is anything to go on then that price is a bit steep.

I'm liking it a lot so far but I only played Asylum. Skipped City. So a lot of the new combat options and gadgets are totally new to me.
The dual combat stuff is super fun and then playing as Robin is so much fun as well. Wish we could free roam as other characters.
Omg the singing Joker bomb defusal section was SO GOOD

I played City and I think this is a superior game for what it's worth.
Just 100% it and I loved it. Might be my GOTY so far and I adored Bloodborne.
I'm really tempted to just bite bullets right now and pick this up for PS4 now. Should I go premium or naw?
Finished it. Really enjoyed it. Surprisingly, I found the story to be really interesting and entertaining.
This game is so well done, everything it wants to do. It does it well.
the batman going crazy effects were super well done. The camera scares and effects etc. Very well executed
Enjoying cleaning up Gotham and getting to 100% ATM.

I've played the first 2 missions. Way too much batmobile shit. Is this a Batman game or a driving game?
The ten minutes between encountering Scarecrow in ACE Chemicals and turning around to see Batman as Gordon are boss

stick to that and you'll enjoy the game
Loved this game. Second favorite of the series. The batmobile sections got old fast, but otherwise it was a blast. Bring on the Batgirl dlc!
Had the game for two days and I'm really liking how casually I can approach everything. The detective segments aren't quite what I liked most from Asylum, but they're still kinda cool so far. I don't 'dislike' the Batmobile stuff, but I agree that they made it a HUGE part of the game when they didn't have to.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but I quite enjoy the Batmobile combat sections so far. Nor sure I like the idea of the drone tanks roaming the streets though

As you clear out the drone tanks, checkpoints, aerial drones, and watchtowers, GCPD can resume patrols, and will give you intel on where the next Most Wanted missions are. So it has a slight bit of a narrative explanation.
