By vire Go To PostPlastic, bulky, heavy and red light keyboard... I hate the look of windows gaming laptops. Shit looks hideous.Lenovo's consumer line is generally of pretty average build quality. But for his usage, Specs and Price far outweigh portability and looks.
Reviews on Amazon seem.. mixed.

Shame that non-ULV processors are either business class laptops or gaming laptops.
my friend has a lenovo and it's nice but the fan runs constantly. i fucking hate it if my laptop makes a peep.
if it's not 100% quite i don't want it.

By Furyous Go To PostIt's not possible to upgrade the RAM on MacBooks post 2011. Everything with an SSD has soldered in RAM.wow
I still would get the Macbook Air and few bucks more for 8GB ram.
Get 8GB, trust me. I don't matter what you use it for or won't use it for. 4GB in 2015 isn't a smart move moving forward.
New Macbooks memory can't be user upgraded.
By Shun Go To PostMost come with 4GB on a single chip. Just salvage a piece from your old one and plug it into your new one. I assume your old one has 1 or 2GB RAM?
I did that with my early 2011 MacBook Pro and I just threw in my old 4GB DDR3 for 8GB.
Upgrading to solid state made my life a lot better. Older MacBooks with a super drive also have the option of getting rid of the internal CD Drive for an extra HDD/SSD. So good.
New Macbooks memory can't be user upgraded.
I'm not saying don't get a Mac. If i needed a laptop for anything more than watching shows in bed i would have a Macbook Retina.
I'm just saying for your needs, specs should be your priority.

Weak for what it is? No.. but weak for a photoshop heavy machine.
When would be the best time to buy a new laptop this year gaming power wise?
If that's a question that makes sense. I want to buy a new laptop, but I want to wait until I can purchase something that will be powerful enough to play most releases for the next few years
Don't know shit about tech tho

If you don't pay off the order within the window of the promotion that's going on (6 months or 12 months etc), then you'll be charged interest for that time period. There is no monthly fee. It's just like an other department card. Just pay it off before the promotion ends.
If you're really trying to get a store card for electronics...look into Best Buy...they operate the same as above but you get points that turn into gift certificates that can be used on anything in the store.
As always spend responsibly !
I'm trying to justify the apple tax since you guys recommend it so much
But
800$+ for 4gbs of soldiered RAM in 2015?

You talking about their credit card/MasterCard or their store card? I was referring to the later.
Psy how much do you currently have saved for the laptop? Also be careful applying to all these places for credit.
Haven't applied to any yet, actually. I'm sure I'll be approved, my credit is pretty good.
I still don't even know which laptop I'm going for yet but I'm assuming itll cost 800+. I have 3/4ths already saved.

I'm going to be buying a new laptop once Uni starts back. Is a macbook my best bet? I've usually disregarded Apple laptops before but all the windows laptops I've had have turned to shit within 2-3 years. I'd like this one to last a little longer and I'm willing to spring the money. Longevity, portability, battery life, good screen etc etc are pretty important for me.
I'll be running stats programs like R and stuff like MathLab. Assume I won't run into any complications because it's a Mac?

Still go Mac. It's going to last a while and you get the benefit of performance and reliability over benchmarks and raw specs.
It will seriously make your life a lot easier and more productive.
If it's still weighing on you, you can still get a 2013 or 2014 model at a lower price new and that will still last a while. My laptop is near on it's 5th year and going on strong.
That or you can finance it and pay it off in instalments.
All Macs are IPS screens so viewing angles are a nonissue and I can run 15 tabs on Safari, a couple large PDFs/ePub books, an MKV movie, and still run Photoshop CS6/Lightroom at the same time just fine with it only getting louder or hotter if I push it too much.
Get a Pro, or if you need to an Air. You'll be able to handle quite a bit. If I threw my other RAM back in for 8GB total it would do more.
You can run Parallels for Windows apps and it will still be all good. If you need help with Mac Apps you need like CS6, Lightroom, etc. I'd be happy to help you obtain them.

My 2-year old MBP with 15" Retina and 256GB SSD and I believe 8GB of RAM runs as well as my early-2015 13" MBP with 16GB retina and SSD work laptop. These things are bullet proof.
Also Fullscreen apps and swiping between them makes life so good with the godtier trackpad. Accessing stuff is so much more convenient.
Apple Store maintenance and replacing stuff within your warranty is great too. Really convenient.
Save up a little more and add the 8GB upgrade for $100. Find a student and use their $200 off discount.

Shun, do you have a video sort of explaining why the Macbooks are so beloved? Sort of strange to me and this is a lot of money man T_T
Like it just clicks. I've used Apple a majority of my life but for people who have made the transition people just enjoy everything about OS X in comparison to Windows.
No need to constantly deal with update reminders, no need for overheating or bad battery life, outstanding keyboard, no bloatware, everything works, the trackpad is top of it's class, accurately calibrated IPS screen.
Fullscreen apps and swiping your finger to move between apps seamlessly, easy notifications built in, outstanding built in calendar and notepad apps, no bullshit.
Trackpad gestures make it extremely fast and easy to access any application, any window you want whenever you want. Tagging and organising your files is easier than ever, scrolling is flawless.
Free OS Updates that are painless to install and boost performance. Going from Mavericks to Yosemite actually improved my freaking battery life.
Most students come out loving their Macbook Air/Pro for very good reason. It's an extremely productive machine.
If someone has a video show Psych cause honestly using it is so natural to me at this point.
You get great support from Apple through the Apple Store and warranty.
Like you might go to an Apple Store and try it out and it will click right away, but if it doesn't it will in like a week or two.
Like I saved up my money for mine almost 5 years ago and it was worth every cent for these past 5 years and it still works as well as the first day. I know how much money this thing is, I treat it like it is a newborn child.

Then I realized it only comes with 128gb of storage man wtf why is this so hard
I can't use this piece of shit anymore gais what the fuck why is this so hard.

That's good for holding all your apps and everything essential for bouts. Can always throw your documents on an HDD. Or opt for a larger SSD but SSDs are too expensive...
That comes with a DVD drive right? You can mod out the DVD drive and throw in an external HDD or just use an HDD. I've seen Toshiba 1TB go for as low as 40 bucks.

And as soon as you start "and you can take a.." it's not really a portable solution.
It's an SSD and if this is a model with a DVD Drive you can just swap the DVD Drive with an internal 1TB HDD to expand your storage. You don't need to carry anything, it's just that if you opt to not do that bringing an HDD isn't a hassle with how small they are.
It very much is feasible as 128 is more than enough for the OS, apps, and user data while documents, drafts, and backups are thrown on the secondary internal drive.
A 2.5 HDD is lighter than a DVD Drive so by replacing it it'd get even lighter. I don't think many people still use a DVD drive with alternative solutions available.

How good is the screen? viewing angles have to be good.
Should I go with the core i5 instead of the core M? Diehard told core Ms are trash.
By PSYCH! Go To PostHow does it handle multitasking with things like browser'sphotoshop etc...?I love the screen. It has a 170 degree viewing angle, which is wide as fuck. All the reviews I read praised the viewing angles and in my experience that's accurate. Here are some quotes I just pulled:

The Asus ZenBook UX305 has a 13.3in 1080p IPS screen where the Apple MacBook Air 13 has a 1440x900 TN screen. Without the tech jargon: the ZenBook screen looks much, much better.
It's sharper, has better colour reproduction and massively superior viewing angles. For a £650 laptop, it's just brilliant. Dell's closest equivalent XPS 13 costs £1000.
Basically, we can’t say anything bad for the screen. You’ll have high resolution, high contrast, 97% sRGB color gamut coverage, good viewing angles, and it’s friendly to your eyes (most of the time). It also has pretty accurate color reproduction – all properties, which cannot be seen even on high-end laptops.
IPS panels usually entail good to very good viewing angles, and the UX305 is no exception. No matter from which position we looked at the screen, color inversions never occurred. From a downward diagonal angle, colors were still marred by a milky film that turned the black surfaces gray, but this did not affect readability.
The ZenBook UX305's IPS display is large and sharp enough for most tasks at 13.3in diagonally and with a full HD resolution of 1920x1080. We've seen brighter whites and deeper blacks, but colour quality is otherwise high and viewing angles very nearly reach a full 180 degrees.
With its matte screen, the UX305 bucks the glossy trend of most modern laptops. This results in colors that look slightly less saturated when compared to the competition, but in return, you get a bright display with almost 180-degree viewing angles and better outdoor visibility.I'm not a hardware expert like Diehard so I can't comment on the processor other than I haven't experienced any performance issues with the Core M. Multitasking seems fine; I often have like a million tabs open in both Firefox and Chrome and watch movies on top of that. I'll download Photoshop later and see if I can put that through some paces.
Basically at this pricepoint I don't think you're going to find a better machine. I know I didn't.
Just tried Photoshop and yeah you shouldn't have any issues multitasking with this. The program itself loads in a snap, faster than I remember on any other computer, probably because of the SSD.
I don't remember life before my chromebook pixel.
Wait, I do, everytime I boot up my old laptop to use lightroom. Hate it.

Thanks Forever. The Zenbook wasn't even on my radar until you posted and damn I'm just wondering how the fuck it's only 700 bucks. Is the RAM soldered on?
