128gb? That's fucking nothing man. I've barely installed shit on this computer and I've used 113gb already.
By reilo Go To PostHave you looked into certified refurbished Apple MBPs?after tax it equals the brand new form macmall.

Is Apple magic pixie dust worth $425 and 128gb of space to you? Ask yourself this.
Honestly I don't even see how this is a difficult choice.

By Forever Go To PostIs Apple magic pixie dust worth $425 and 128gb of space to you? Ask yourself this. For OSX? I'd argue vehemently, "yes". But that's just me. Granted, I am a software engineer so my perception is vastly skewed. I get more out of OSX than Psych would.
Optimisation and longer lasting value is worth much more in the long run especially for someone who does designs and editing. There's a reason why most of design industry stick with Apple. Logic Pro, Final Cut, arguably Autodesk 3D Mac over Solidworks.
Specs mean jack shit if it's not optimised for the OS and software you are running. Your apps won't be resource intensive and your machine will be much more efficient because of the OS you are running. Fullscreen apps and swiping between them increase your productivity and let you do more.
It's magic for a reason. Running 5 years on my MacBook Pro no issues and will continue to run this one for a few more years, There are people still using a 2008/2009 Macbook Pro and running strong.
It comes with a warranty that they will bend their back over for you too.
Give it a chance Psy, Amazon 30 day return guarantee. Try it out.
You can even throw in an extra HDD/SSD for storage and expand it internally. Can the Asus do that hmmm. Go for Quality. Quality.
Edit: I'm amazed at the return policies in America and how many people exploit it. Holy shit I can return something I used within the 30 day period and get an entire refund. America is so weird.

This is a simple case of a luxury he apparently can't afford. 128gb is not enough hdd space. So buy what you can afford.
Yes, the programs would probably run better on OSx than on Windows. But if he can't afford the extra price tag than it's not really worth laboring over.
I'd suggest you buy what you can afford that best suits all your criteria as a whole psych, and doesn't mean you're skipping meals for a month.
In a year or two, you can always look to upgrade again, or even rent an MBP from somewhere. You could even look out for a cheap one to pop up on craigslist or the like and try it out and make your decision from there.
It doesn't void the warranty, I cleared it with the Apple Store. At least in my case YMMV.
Besides if you're doing design backups are essential and backing up is streamlined and stupid easy with Time Machine anyway.

A new MBP doesn't come with a DVD drive so Shun is wrong on that one. But Thunderbolt/USB 3.0/NAS drives are reliable with a quick transfer rate. Any pro shop isn't keeping their data saved to local disk anyhow, but that's a separate debate.
I thought he was buying the 13inch model that wasn't retina so my mistake.
Apple still sell those ones with SuperDrives and haven't phased those out yet.
I don't know it seems you're getting it off Amazon so you can test it for a month and see if it's for you.
I see it as a prior investment to help productivity and further one's own career, that's how I justify it.

I went with the i5 Zenbook UX305LA.
This is what I figured, I needed an upgrade right now, my current garbage laptop is running on fumes. 2 gbs of god awful RAM, can barely run a web browser+spotify and it doesn't help that I've fried it once buy spilling hot coffee on it.
By all accounts, this Zenbook is a quality product and hits my spec requirements, it means I can do what I want to do on it.
I definitely appreciate the posts by Shun,Furyous and Reilo(and everyone else that posted) on their experience with the MacBook line. The way I see it, in maybe a year or twos time, hopefully I'm making more money and this Zenbook should allow me to get to that point, and I'm really curious, I can afford to get a Macbook without any bottlenecks(like what Giri said).
right now 750 for what the Zenbook offers is too much of a bargain.
Thanks Forever and Diehard.

I'm a little jealous actually because now I wish I got the i5. I was in a rush when I bought and didn't even realize that was an option. I already threw out the box so it's too late to return it but let me know how yours works for you.
Glad I could help.
By the way, don't forget to update your drivers when you get your laptop. The Audio and VGA updates made a big difference for me (especially the Audio).
This is incredible
wtf a touchpad without actual buttons
my wifi seems 10x faster
im using fucking chrome lmao no lag
i cna run spotify and chrome

By PSYCH! Go To Postonly weird thing is that spotify looks weirdly low resRight click the shortcut --> Properties --> Compatibility --> Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
Repeat for any other programs with the same problem.
By Dark PhaZe Go To Post800 bux for those specs seems badIt isn't, its quite good actually.
;o/
Dude i would just disable display scaling all-together. 1080p native at 13.3'' is fine.
I dont know what OS you have but just type "scaling" in the start menu and windows should be able to take you there. Either hit the button that says 100% or adjust the slider down to 100%.

By zeritte Go To Posthey dude, how is going onIt's pretty awesome. relatively no problems. I can run Photoshop CC and have 40 tabs open in Chrome without any lag.

I've also used Sony Vegas, and multiple other programs simultaneously without issue.
Never used CAD so idk how much more intensive it would be.
Screen size is great for me, I had to disable the auto 200% scaling for Photoshop and disable scaling in some other programs though, otherwise they take up way too much of the screen. Screen size is 13.3 inches and I was worried it'd be too small coming from a 15 inch laptop but I haven't had ANY issues.
Awesome resolution and the best part about it for me because I do a lot of digital art is there's ZERO glare.
edit: ONE issue you might have is that sometimes the video card dies and the screen goes blank for a couple seconds. This only happens when I have multiple chrome windows open with 15+tabs each with video content(porn) open, with Photoshop running. After doing some research, this might be a chrome related hardware acceleration issue or I need to update my drivers.
thank u again. lmao when u said porn tabs.
so u r saying this pc is successful and has high performance. when i looked asus ux305la i saw it has i7. but u wrote i5. could u inform me

By zeritte Go To Postthank u again. lmao when u said porn tabs.lol it's definitely successful . the UX305LA has the i5. I don't believe the 305 series carries the i7. From a quick search I think that may be the Zenbook UX303UB and it's about $500 USD more expensive.

and to update on the video card crashing thing, yeah, my drivers were out of date. That was the problem.
i am happy to hear that your problem has solved
