I'm looking to uprgade my laptop in the near future. The one in using right now is pretty shit. I prefer to use my lg g3 over it almost all the time. Especially since chrome is almost unusable on my machine.
It has 1gm of ram and an awful screen.
I'm looking for something g that can run image editing software like Photoshop really well. Id love to be able to start using Photoshop to draw and paint but my hunk of junk just can't do it anymore. Also, screen brightness/quality is pretty important. I'm guessing at least a 720p screen will do the job. Whenever I look at my art on other screens the colors are way duller on my screen.
Can you guys reccomend the specs I should be looking for in a laptop for 600-700 bucks?
Don't really care about gaming on it. Just want to be able to run my applications without any slowdown and work on canvases larger than 2000x2000.

Stop being a cheapass save another $600 to $700 and buy a macbook pro. Apple tax only counts on new products in the first year. Find a student and use their discount to save more on a macbook.

Ok, he's after a photoshop laptop. Yeah get a mac.
Just. Know. Every single student I know regrets the choice as they always end up just using windows on it anyway.
But if you're solely going to be using it for photoshop and just browsing, then yeah, mac.

Been using Mac laptops for 8 years now and I have zero regrets. The hardware quality on the latest Macbook Air is second to none. If I ever need to run a Windows exclusive program like putty or WinSCP for IT work, I can dual boot or just use VMWare for Windows, but 99% of the time I stay on OSX.
My only complaint is the piece of shit power adapter that it comes with. Always frays at the ends and needs replacement after two years.
Seriously though, what's the advantage of the macbook?
I feel like I could get a windows laptop with twice the ram for less.

By psychintellect Go To PostSeriously though, what's the advantage of the macbook?Best keyboard and trackpad available on a laptop (period), unrivaled battery life (13 hours), extremely lightweight and amazing form factor for portability, good quality RAM, processors, hard drives and displays. No problems with heat/noise even when operating many programs at once.

OS X Yosemite shits on Windows 8.1
I dunno, it's just like a really well made laptop I think and I've been incredibly happy with mine. But I get it if you want to go cheaper for sho.
Dell XPS is probably the most similar product in terms of form factor/weight/performance.

They're good, but they're not really in a class of their own.
There's plenty of good laptops for a good price if you go looking.
And the people I run into in the real world are much less devout in their praise than anyone I've met online.
Also, i've got a dell XPS, they're not portable. I mean, most laptops that are powerful aren't really portable. But the Toshiba's go allright.
Also, i don't know what price point they come in at in america, but the Microsoft Surface Pro 3's get great reviews from everyone.
The Surface Pro 4's are supposedly due out when Win 10 releases.
A guy in my class asked for a macbook from his parents when he graduated high school. We're working with Autocad and a buch of other programmes for our study. He's always booting Windows on his Macbook to work with those. Absolutely sensational.

I'm still using my Macbook 13" from 2008. I'm an advertising student so I use Illustrator, Photoshop, etc and everything runs without a problem. I did upgrade to 8GB of RAM like two years ago, everything is smooth as butter now.
I can't imagine going back to Windows.

I'm actually really happy with my Surface Pro3 . I use it as my main computer at work. And when I need to show something to my boss, i just grab the tablet and go to her.
Fuck Surface's.
Get at least a 1080p IPS screen if you want to do Photoshop, It took me a while to find one for a good price but im completely TN-free now.

touchpad. i'm not a mac fan, far from it but that thing is just too good. i can't go back, i tried anything. i made a list of 200 laptops with pros and cons a year ago because i didn't want a macbook but the battery, touchpad, screen combo of the macbook just beat everything easily. i have zero issues with that thing and it's sturdy, quiet, reasonably small and light.
i don't like it but it's the way it is.
but if you plug in a mouse to do photoshop anyway and don't use it for other work or casual browsing, that's another story.
funny thing is, it was actually one of the cheaper ones here.

The true value in MacBooks lie over time. They work well for years. I got seven years out of my iMac desktop. Yes, it was overpriced in year one but by year three it was a helluva value. Macbook's advantage lies in software, support, development community, and durability. Yes, you can buy some cheap windows laptop for 1/4 the cost but I guarantee you replace that laptop before you replace the macbook. Apple's touchpad is magical.
I went from an iMac to a retina macbook last year. DEM FEELS are great. I run the device at 2K resolution and switch to 4K when I'm lazy. Might upgrade to a newer second gen version of whatever comes after Skylake. In other news, I ordered a carbon fiber skin from slick wraps because my macbook needs protection.

How long are you going to use it? 8 GB of RAM is what I'd push for especially if you plan on reselling it. What is this 720p you speak of? Oh you must mean resolution. My retina macbook pro does 2K. If you're on air then that's cool but I paid over $2,000 for this laptop so it surpasses 1080p.
Hoping to use it for a long time. Seems most "cheaper" macbooks come with 4gb.
Like, I'm so done with not being able to run a browser + another app simultaneously.

Most come with 4GB on a single chip. Just salvage a piece from your old one and plug it into your new one. I assume your old one has 1 or 2GB RAM?
I did that with my early 2011 MacBook Pro and I just threw in my old 4GB DDR3 for 8GB.
Upgrading to solid state made my life a lot better. Older MacBooks with a super drive also have the option of getting rid of the internal CD Drive for an extra HDD/SSD. So good.
I'd get the 8 GB/13 inch MacBook Air.

Have you looked at Asus's lineup? Normally i would recommend something like this http://store.asus.com/us/item/201502AM130000188/A18489 , But i'm hesitant to say get a Core M if you are serious about Photoshop.

size and weight doesn't matter at all. This laptop is going to be stationary 99% of the time.

It is a good machine, but it does have a Core M. They are really low voltage processors designed for really mobile machines. They are really "bursty" , it will run pretty fast for a short time but thermal constraints make it slow down.
If it is going to be that stationary and you are that serious about Photoshop, a CPU with an "H" or an "HQ" at the end (ala i7-4720HQ) would be preferred.
