You could be learning & fucking up, while also making money
Studying isn't bad but the rate you're going at it, without being in the industry or contributing to a project or whatever seems super high, and a burnout waiting to happen.

at the very least, you should be building up an online presence on instagram/twitter/twitch/artstation or whatever. school isn't necessary, but your playbook is going to have to be a little different
@sy: when I was 12 I made some really shitty MUGEN characters, released them publically and got roasted so hard I managed to improve and become a good MUGEN coder in a year or so. so yeah release your art and get roasted, only way to git gud.
aaand yesterday I just got a raise beyond my expectations. gonna take a nice vacation abroad with this money when this covid shit is over.

Really respect sy’s work ethic. Wish I had it but found out early that it was horse shit and 70% of your success is networking and not being an asshole.
I don’t much about being an illustrator and I can barely draw a stick figure so I’m not going to comment on your skills or what you feel is a lack of skills...
What I will say is I get that you feel you have a lot to learn, but that’s the case for any field. You’re always going to be improving and learning new techniques. Don’t hold yourself back. There’s gonna be thousands of people in your field doing that. Don’t make it easier for them

By aka Espi Go To PostI don’t much about being an illustrator and I can barely draw a stick figure so I’m not going to comment on your skills or what you feel is a lack of skills…Absolutely. This a lifelong vocation. I have no intention of reaching some nebulous level of skill before getting my feet wet. I'm literally just learning the basics of the basics that I avoided my entire my life then onwards to building a portfolio.

Respect the commitment to the plan, Psy clearly has a standard he wants to get before putting himself out there. Sure there may be benefits to doing it before but you got to believe your ready or atleast feel ready to take the plunge or all that networking becomes half assed because you dont believe in your shit.
Really pondering this career change but man.... as much as I've been around, this shit never stops being scary.
I'm leaving my job at the end of this month so I can focus on finishing up my masters. I'm in my last couple classes right now and I have an internship that requires many hours per week. I start teaching in January anyway, so this was coming sooner or later.
On to bigger and better things!

By DY_nasty Go To PostCongrats man. I know you've been at it for agesThanks, bro! Even with my bachelor's, I had to take four semesters of pre-req classes just to get into the grad program, which then took me another two years. It's a big relief to be at the end and really exciting to be doing something that I'm actually excited and happy about.
I'm pretty lucky in that I've been making decent money and been able to pay for everything out of pocket the last four years. I won't have an extra debt from my masters, just what's left from my student loans on my bachelor's, which is only about $4,500 now.

By sy Go To PostIn what field?Education. Finishing up my masters and my teaching license. The masters isn't required, but I earn a lot more if I have it.
Did my undergraduate studies in English and journalism, but I knew by the end of my junior year that I had zero interest in being a journalist, so I pivoted to education. In the spring, I got to work with 12th graders and I loved it. I hope that I can teach 11th or 12th next year.
its nice to find something you love to do.
Good stuff Rodeo. you can tell who the good teachers are when you notice they love teaching.

I have far more patience for teenagers than I do Jarrett Culver. He'll never be good, but I can teach a kid to explain the themes of Brave New World to me.
Excel, my ms office word. :(
The amount of data stored in random, indiscriminate columns with even more random formats that people expect me to just magically import into a real, actual database at any time with an uploaded file.... holy fucking lower case christ.

Kinda lost steam to continue to develop the site I've been working on to build some skills now that it is functional and relatively easy to add content for. I have issues logged to address (using github for both hosting and issue tracking) but have just lost a lot of motivation to do more. Even when it is something as simple as styling links and changing font sizes of the different header levels.

Since Epic bought artstation, they've made all their courses free for the rest of 2021. A lot of it's pertaining to 3d software(blender, UE, maya, etc) so I'm not too interested but for those that are: https://www.artstation.com/learning
my little post production studio is growing.
I'm juggling 4 features currently. Cant handle the workload myself so I hired two recent college grads to help me out.
Also, I've negotiated a deal and I'll be directing an independent feature film sometime this fall with a sizeable budget. nothing too sexy, its just a dramedy. Being around studio level productions and working one on one with Directors in the past has really help grasp what it takes to be a Director.

Wowww that's exciting as hell
What does your studio work on mainly? Editing? Compositing, color grade, vfx / all of the above? Only semi-familiar with the live action process
