By n8 dogg Go To PostThe Handmaiden was the best film of last year. What a fucking movie.Yeah distribution in Germany was fucking shit.
Hardly any cinema showed it here, some movie festivals in bigger cities. Was only released here last August or so.
I waited so long ;_;
Don’t even know when it’s coming out here. Wasn’t surprised he was nommed over Franco

By HasphatsAnts Go To PostShould I waste my time with The Post or should I just watch Spotlight again?
Worth seeing so you can form an opinion lad
By Mister0079 Go To Postdunkirk a shitlol. it was an ok film, nothing more, nothing less.
I personally wouldn't want to see it again.
really hope BR2049 gets best Cinematography.

By Random Ass Username Go To PostHaven't seen Dunkirk, did they not focus on the main man Ramsay who managed to organize that whole evacuation under Dover in secret. Oh wow just looked it up and dude is mentioned but not even in the movie? What…Like many said, that wasn't the point of the film. And Nolan accomplished what he wanted to get across very well. But that doesn't translate in Dunkirk being good enough for a nomination as best picture in a year with so many great films.
Dunkirk isn't a character driven film.
its a plot/event driven.
maybe that's why it doesn't resonate with me,
there's nothing, I as a viewer, can make a connection with.

And I feel that if they focused on Ramsay's insane efforts to organize all the nonmilitary craft and keep the whole thing hush hush you'd probably get a better picture that resonates with people. And a better set up for the insanity on the beach itself. I'll have to watch it. I learned about Dunkirk with a fuckton of context and it made it that much more amazing. Operation Dynamo and all the effort to use Dover and keep it hush hush af and all the fake intel they put out there to keep the Germans from knowing shit.
Edited my 2017 list and added my own picks (winners in bold) for each of the relevant Oscar categories (so docs and shorts left off)

One of the most baffling things about Dunkirk was that they repeated the "you can almost see it from here?" "what sir?" "home" scene twice but from a slightly different shot lol
By HasphatsAnts Go To PostLmao I just noticed that John Williams got nominated for Star Wars but no Blade Runner.
Wtf.
Blade Runner's music paled in comparison to Vangelis stuff.
I know people hate on Bobby Roberts all over the internet, but he did some real good podcasts on the music of the Last Jedi. Listening to it again is really really eyeopening, the shit on Crait alone is fantastic.
By n8 dogg Go To PostBlade Runner's music paled in comparison to Vangelis stuff.I would rather watch your poop pictures all day long than listening to Bobby Roberts.

Just because it didn’t live up to the greatest score since Bernard Herrmann doesn’t mean it wasn’t good.
It was excellent in its own right

It was good, a little derivative of itself, afraid to explore new ground.
The score really brought itself together during the beach scene though. That was some of the most amazing and intense shit I've seen. Gosling is batting 1.00 on scenes filmed on the Santa Monica beach at night.
Just watched The Open House, it was disappointing. While it nails the creepiness on the first hour, the payoff is incredibly weak and the ending is terrible.
It seems like it had a decent idea of the weirdness that is having where anyone can roam around freely without much supervision (the writers/directors were so proud of that premise that they even made the lead explain that to the audience) but don't do much with it.
The first shots of the house give huge hints about what is going to happen in final act but then they don't explain who is doing this and why.I don't know if their intention was to set up a sequel where everything is explained or if they just wanted for it to have no logical explanation so it gives the audience the impression that it could happen to anyone but it didn't really worked for me.
Makes sense why Netflix didn't pushed more attention to it, they probably didn't have much faith on the audience liking it.
Shame because I really wanted to like it.

Wind River was good. Just watched the blu-ray. Looked nice, was well paced, concise and to the point. Elizabeth Olsen picks good roles. Renner was good here too.
By RATHasReturned Go To PostI'm only only one here that loves loves loves Dunkirk, and that's fine with me.
I really like Dunkirk as well. But it's not the kind of film I could rewatch. I saw it on Imax 70MM and I don't know if a second viewing at home could compare to that.
Theater is showing Dunkirk once tomorrow at noon for some reason, so I'm finally going to catch that. Then I'm going to do Shape of Water, Paddington and finish with Hostiles. Might have to miss the last few minutes of Paddington though.
Saw Blade Runner for the first time yesterday.
Beautiful ;_; and exactly what I kinda wanted. Ticket the right boxes and while I have to admit that the movie also isn't without flaws, Villeneuve just nailed the important points. Gosling is also a perfect fit.
I'm happy.
After all those years and rather bad attempts or mediocore ones with older franchises (Twin Peaks, X-Files, Star Wars, Alien, Jurassic Parc are all approaches I didn't enjoy or hated) left me a bit bitter towards those approaches, therefore I'm glad Villeneuve nailed it.

Dunkirk was a very nothing experience. I didn't mind the weaving and overlapping stories, but there was just nothing to it.
Some nice shots, however the Zimmer soundtrack was largely overbearing and the constant score in a few scenes just sounded bad. Downright unpleasant noise. The sound effects were awesome though.
Easiest payday of Tom Hardy's career?
Shape of Water next.

Dunkirk was the best Nolan movie in a decade. I know that's not saying much but i wasn't actually annoyed for 80% of the movie which is progress.
The scene where the civilians show up tho... uuuuuuughhhhh. You did so well up to then Christopher.
Good 7/10.

Shape of Water is one of the years best. I really, really liked everything about it. The tune that plays throughout the film during Eliza's interactions with the creature is so charming and sets the tone for their story. The use of water in transition shots, as well as the background music played from the television that's incorporated into the soundtrack is all so seamless.
Del Toro has the Oscar on lock. There are a number of really creative tricks he pulls and they're all perfect for this love story.
Sally Hawkins is so, so lovely. I hope she goes on to do whatever she wants. Would give her all the awards for this one. Just brilliant. Perfect casting.
The supporting cast are all very good too (Jenkins is so underrated) but Michael Shannon is flying very close to the Morgan Freeman trope of playing a Michael Shannon character in a few of his recent performances. Was great in Nocturnal Animals though.
