By WJD Go To PostThis is bang on, except I think King's Speech is okay.
Moonlight is the best of the lot.
Geoffrey Rush saves that film from catatonia
By Apollo Go To PostLol wrinkle in time reviews. Remember when Nate wanted Ava to make a Star Wars movie?
I wasn’t even the biggest fan of Selma, lad. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to see people DuVernay given shit like SW.
Would rather have her than milquetoast Howard
Ava sucks bruh. Selma is carried by one actor. Her other two films are boring as fuck. Her documentary was full of outdated bullshit. Wrinkle looks and is supposedly fucking horrible.
If I wasn't attracted to her I wouldn't even ever care about anything she has going on.
Howard has made some damn fine movies. His track record is way better than hers.

Anyone with two eyes knew that Wrinkle would be less than stellar.
Relegated to "whoever". WOW. /jk
Nolan is trustworthy enough to know what is possible with the process and all the voting. I saw a few 2019 predictions and Michael B. Jordan is on their contender list for Supporting actor. MBJ, costuming, and music are the best it SHOULD get. Disney and all their money is more than capable of pushing it for other categories. They'll proclaim the first Superhero movie to be best picture worthy, run out the cast, repeat its importance, etc. etc. I'm just been telling everyone here not to be surprised when it shows up in a whole bunch of undeserving categories.
By domino Go To PostWell whoever said BP is gonna get some Oscar noms has Nolan on their side

Nothings been released this year. We don’t even start talking Oscar contranders until Venice and that’s in September.
Get Out was called early fam
I really like Shape of Water, but Oscars done fucked up not giving it to Get Out. That shit’s an all-timer. Even if you didn’t love it, people are going to talk about it in 50 years.

Get Out is on a whole other level of filmmaking. BP is a good Marvel movie with crappy action and bad fucking CGI third act that isn't very entertaining.

Swear to god. It’s going down as one of the defining movies of the 2010s.

I totally agree with you. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it get a fair few noms though, captured the zeitgeist.
By dIEHARD Go To PostTalk about "Get Out" in 50 years? Are people going to be talking about it in 5?
Yep.
"Sunken place" will be probably be in the black lexicon for the next century and I haven't even watched it.
By dIEHARD Go To PostTalk about "Get Out" in 50 years? Are people going to be talking about it in 5?
Peele is the first black writer to win best original screenplay. He's younger and has a bright future in front of him. Get Out isn't going anywhere bud.
Not all films nommed at the Oscars are the highest pinnacle of screenwriting and movie making so this discussion is weird. It's about the committee being lobbied to fuck and choosing certain movies many people have seen.

Good lord yes Issa classic
Seems like Scorsese finished shooting The Irishman, wonder if it'll get a theatrical release like Annihliation did.. I mean, it's Scorsese right?
By domino Go To PostGood lord yes Issa classicI just don't see it.
Not that i can name any recent movie that i would consider a "classic".
By Freewheelin Go To PostSeems like Scorsese finished shooting The Irishman, wonder if it'll get a theatrical release like Annihliation did.. I mean, it's Scorsese right?Annihilation and The Irishman are two different situations, Netflix only has the distribution rights for outside the USA and China for Annihilation while The Irishman is all done by them.
It might have a limited theatrical release in the USA and a couple other countries but don't count much on it.
Edit: Now that I thought a bit more about, a limited USA theatrical release is a given. Netflix would probably try and get an Oscar nomination for it.
I don't understand what all the hoopla is about, far worse films than BP have won BP at the Oscars. Fucking hell, Crash and Shakespeare in love have best picture statues. Let's stop aggrandising the Oscars - it's elitist masturbation.

Since 2012 (last 5 years)
Fury Road
Grand Budapest
Moonlight
Handmaiden
12 YAS
The Master
Tinker Tailor
Django
Killing Them Softly
CMBYN
The Witch
Phantom Thread
Inside Llewyn Davis
Under the Skin
Anomalisa
Magic Mike XXL
are all fucking great movies, and that’s just off the top of my head.
The one that most rivals Get Out for ‘instant classic, already talked about as a gamechanger’ is Fury Road.
By rodeoclown Go To PostFury Road came out in 2015 and I would consider it a modern classic.Ok i'll go for that
"The Witch" is definitely closer to being a classic to me than "Get Out" is, but i know it wasn't liked as well.
I think Get Out is just a really good movie. But if you're black, it's probably the best movie you've seen since Roots.

He’s still got that love for the cinema experience

By Freewheelin Go To PostScorsese has so much heft and influence that he must want it to be released in cinemas at least in the US. He’s still got that love for the cinema experienceDoesn't matter, only reason why it could have a theatrical release is for awards purpose and even then it would be a limited release because few theaters would want to show it at the same time it's available on Netflix and Netflix won't allow cinemas to show it before.
Scorcese is a great director but he isn't exactly a big box office draw. He has been trying to do The Irishman for a decade but no studio was willing to put up the money for it. The starting budget for it was of 120M$ but it's already almost 150M$.
For it to be profitable on the box office, it would have to be more successful than The Wolf Of Wall Street and that was a way more accessible movie for the mainstream audience than a slow drama about an old gangster remembering his early days.
Get Out keeps getting better for me on rewatch. The screenplay is just extremely well-composed. It's phenomenal at having the characters act in ways that make sense on an initial watch but are then entirely recontextualized once the truth behind everything is revealed. Rose not wanting Chris to show his ID to the cop, their obsession with his smoking, the fact that Georgina and Walter wear a wig/hat to cover their scars. Then you have things like Walter's running at night, which is a pretty huge hint early on as to his true nature. Obviously, it telegraphs early on that there is something off about everything, but the way it presents you with clues in pretty plain sight that are just beyond full comprehension is fantastic. A definite future classic for me.
Get Out is great - Chris taking agency was great and Rose, seriously. Even when everything was burning down she followed her programming to the end

People still talk about how much of a tour de force Shakespeare In Love was, and how it launched the career of acclaimed actor, Joseph Fiennes.
By s y Go To PostWas hoping he'd do something less grand like Prisoners or Enemy. He will when Dune flops. It's incredibly risky to divide it into 2 films, I love Villeneuve but he doesn't have mainstream appeal and Dune is probably going to be expensive.

After Dune inevitably bombs he'll likely return to smaller films, which is a shame, but he'll forever have Blade fucking Runner 2049 and goddamn Dune on his resume. I can live with it, so will he.
