By rvy Go To Postnier automata is a jrpgI quite liked Nier Automata. Not as much as some people, but it was good. Ambitious ideas executed on a shoestring budget. Combat was subpar.

Not a jrpg in my book.

Divinity: Original Sin and Shadowrun Dragonfall / Hong Kong, borrow from X-Com for combat. Try them out.
By reilo Go To PostCold Take: Fallout isn't a good series1 and 2 were legit. everything after that was a drag that only went as far as it did because it had the post apocalyptic theme to itself more or less
Just started a game in 4 actually with DLC and mods. I'm kind of hyped...despite knowing I quit the game in the past for...reasons I can't remember right now.
Modern Fallout are always games that I've wanted to like on paper but they just aren't fun to actually play. Fallout 3 I finished the main story but skipped 90% of the side content. Never put anymore than 10 hours into New Vegas and 4.
I didn't know Respawn was working on a Star Wars game. That could be wild.
This is EA's last chance, if Respawn can't do it good then its over

Is there a specified number of Titanfall sequels in their contract? Kind of surprised they're still beating that drum after it hasn't set the world on fire.

thats pure fukkery unless they have contractual obligations to fulfill
By livefromkyoto Go To PostIs there a specified number of Titanfall sequels in their contract? It was Titanfall 2 that was sent to die because EA threw it out in late fall with little marketing against Battlefield and Call of Duty. (I've still never played it because I'm part of the problem.)

It did pass 10 million WW combined after fire sales. I just remember people complaining that the online was a ghost town after a short while, so I don't know what those numbers really mean in terms of its actual viability as a franchise. The last one did review well, so maybe one more kick at the can with a more favourable release date can't hurt. But it may be telling that COD stole most of its tricks and its audience seemed to want to get rid of them.
I know a couple of people on here think highly of it, but TBH the demo for 2 on PS4 left me really underwhelmed. I didn't even feel motivated to finish it in one sitting so it's probably not for me.
By reilo Go To PostCold Take: Fallout isn't a good series
Colder take: Good Amount (Not Most, Not All) of Open World WRPGs are buggy af, lack polish and suck ass
I don't like the filler content in most open worlds, like gathering random items for crafting. One of the things I dislike most about the Mordor games (well, I only played the first) is that I find the world to be ugly, mostly barren, and completely reliant on you really digging into the nemesis stuff to find enjoyment. Otherwise, you're left with a dreadful story and side content that is mostly repetitive, basic quests and object hunting.
Wrpgs used to be good, but the good ones never sold well enough for the genre to survive, now devs just add a few extra menus to a shooter and call it an RPG...

Can agree with that. I’d rather have an open world game with few well designed quests and no filler content.
Fuck the “radiant” quests in Skyrim/Fallout 4. Ain’t nobody got time for some bullshit clear dungeon quests. If i wanted to clear it, I would’ve done it already.
Assassin’s Creed Origins is on my shitlist for padding the game out with tripe too. It’s a good game, I enjoyed it. Would’ve enjoyed it a lot more if it cut out all the padding. Grinding to gather materials to upgrade armour/weapons. On top of the levelled loot, so aside from gathering shite, you’ve gotta constantly switch to the new “best” in your inventory for that 2+ damage.
Fallout 3, NV and 4 are all okay
Nothing more, nothing less. People who put NV on a pedestal are lunatics.

So, I'll agree with you that AC:O is probably too long. I got 40% through and needed a break. But that "here's your new +2 thing" is how just about every game with a loot system works. It's there to keep the player feeling like they're constantly being rewarded. The crafting has been absolutely no big deal for me, I've already gotten close to maxing everything just by doing whatever I come across. It's not like it's even necessary anyway, you're generally powerful enough just by playing through normally, unless you're trying to take out all the phylakes, this game's lynels. Armour is the one major thing, for when you get ganged up on by animals and can't avoid hits.
Also, if we're talking about crummy, glitchy Western open worlds, we should give this game its due for having a largely glitch/jank-free really beautifully crafted open world.
I hate any game where I am always at level with my foes... if even for a bit I want my new gear and powers to dominate
By YungMagus Go To PostName me some of the classics Ace.Just about anything made with the Infinity Engine. Planescape: Torment, the Baldur's Gate series, etc.

I haven't played BF1 in months. Decided to try it again with the release of the last DLC. Man they really ratcheted up the "this is war" and its depressing af. Grey everywhere. Dark and gloomy.
That said ready for them to go back to modern weapons now. Was fun while it lasted.

NeverWinter Nights EE coming this year hopefully. Also forgot to mention Pathfinder crpg thats coming out.
I thought Eurogamer's review of Kingdom Come was great. Goes into detail about how good the game can be, but not recommending it because he's uncomfortable with the issues surrounding the game, and how the PoC argument is flimsy
...then I read the comments, there and at Resetera and I just feel disheartened. The most was about this paragraph:
That somehow gets miscued as a absentee black father trope. It really isn't. I dont get why many are looking to be justified with buying the game WHILST thinking there is no underlying problems with it.
Like people who pirates media and defends themselves by saying that statistically it doesn't hurt sales.

"We know of African kings in Constantinople on pilgrimage to Spain; we know of black Moors in Spain; we know of extensive travel of Jews from the courts of Cordoba and Damascus; we also know of black people in large cities in Germany," the historian, Sean Miller, tells me. Czech cities Olomouc and Prague were on the famous Silk Road which facilitated the trade of goods all over the world. If you plot a line between them, it runs directly through the area recreated in Kingdom Come. "You just can't know nobody got sick and stayed a longer time," he says. "What if a group of black Africans came through and stayed at an inn and someone got pregnant? Even one night is enough for a pregnancy."
