By Fenderputty Go To PostNY Time opinion is indeed awful. They get blasted on Twitter each time they promote one of their pieces too. All in an effort to appease the fake new morons. That, plus the Overton window has moved so far to the right that Bret Stephens can get a Times column while the leftist perspective is left to the odd guest column from Matt Bruenig. Both sides!
I think it's news to the ownership and editorial staff at the times that a valid criticism of Trump can exist outside of idea that he "doesn't respect our democratic norms" or whatever.
Think of how many reporters the Times could hire with what they pay to Bret Stephens and David Brooks.
I love the “he’s doing great, he’s defeated ISIS and made the economy soar!” opinions though. Like a case study on mental gymnastics
The reason these stories keep getting published is because many in the media simply cannot wrap their heads around how someone like Trump has any appeal. His election shattered their worldview in a very fundamental way (responsible centrists are ultimately in charge of society, status quo "bipartisan" politics and incrementalism are the way of the world, Republicans simply see things differently and aren't by their nature dangerous), so they have to try and continually "understand" Trump supporters when the majority of them (especially those who *still* support him) are simply nationalistic bigoted blowhards.
A much more interesting story is about people who voted for Obama then for Trump, or people who voted for Trump but are now disillusioned, or people who didn't vote at all. But it's a lot easier to do stories like "Trump Supporter and Boat Dealership Owner Vince Chudworth Is Still Behind the President" than those.

There’s repercussions for keeping it real. Self preservation has to be a factor in that equation to some extent. Financial to some and others on a more personal level.
I legit hate these motherfuckers..... just thinking about this makes me want to punch someone in the eye

Long before Donald Trump emerged as the most prominent purveyor of a racist conspiracy theory concerning the country’s first black president, played political footsie with white supremacists, condemned “globalism,” sold himself to the masses as a guru of personal enrichment, attacked American allies as scroungers, and made overtures to authoritarian regimes like Russia, there was Ron Paul. The ideological similarities between the two men, and the ways in which they created support, are striking.
...
Though Paul is often called an orthodox libertarian, his ideology is more accurately described as paleolibertarian, which shares the limited government principles of traditional libertarianism but places a heavier emphasis on conservative social values, white racial resentment, and isolationist nationalism. It is, in many ways, a forerunner of today’s alt-right, and Paul himself has proven to be something of a gateway drug to even more extreme political movements. Tony Hovater, the neo-Nazi subject of a much-discussed New York Times profile last year, recalled that his fascist awakening began in 2012, when, as a supporter of Paul’s presidential campaign, he watched the Republican National Convention implement rule changes designed to favor eventual nominee Mitt Romney. Among the eclectic interests of Nicholas Young, the thirty-eight-year-old former Washington, D.C., Metro police officer who tried to assist the Islamic State, were Islamic radicalism, Nazism, neo-Confederacy, and… Ron Paul. In a piece about the part played by online subcultures in the radicalization of alt-right activists, Buzzfeed News’s Charlie Warzel noticed how so many individual stories “followed a similar pattern: steadfast libertarians—as the Times piece claimed Hovater was at one point—who found their way to the message board through an errant link and stayed awhile for the off-color jokes only to be drawn in by the political arguments,” eventually becoming full-blown neo-reactionaries.

Interesting article I read last night linking Trump and Ron Paul, thought I'd share it here.

Putting aside that it's complete and utter lunacy to begin with.

Plays well with the people NYT cares about.
What does it even mean when people call "NYTimes" the "newspaper of record"?
Like, does that mean every other newspaper is basically just non-authoritative, or what? What does it mean to be a newspaper of record?

It means that on top of covering New York it also provides coverage on important, nationally and globally relevant stories
Saw a take on the other board that the SC wants to knock out NC, Wisconsin, and other challenges all at once, so they didn't want to prematurely set precedence here.

This is basically what the NC GOP argued. “You have Wisconsin. If you took this case a stay would have been granted”

US Soccer president is basically warning that they could lose their bid to host the 2026 World Cup because of the orange idiot. I imagine he has to be in the know. Of course FIFA is not a symbol of ethics or morality but there has been an emphasis on cleaning their image. Saying no to a US World Cup when the world's outlook of the US is at an all time low would give them credibility of some sort. Then again they are still holding a World Cup in Russia and Qatar so it's empty "credibility."

Yeah. DACA didn't need to end. it was ended as a political move to get Dems to sign a garbage spending bill. CHIP could have been funded but it's being used as another tool to gain leverage. DACA should have never ended. CHIP should have been funded and the GOP should be putting a spending bill up that can siphon moderate dem support off in the senate. Instead we're shutting down in a game of politics and doing jack squat about anything in the process.
By SchuckyDucky Go To PostWhat's the latest on the potential government shutdown? Is it looking more or less likely?
I don't think the Dems are interested in passing any CR, let alone the one out of the house. Dems can afford to give 8 senators from purple seats the ability to vote for debate on the spending bill and it's still an effective filibuster in the senate killing everything. As of now it's extend DACA and CHIP clean or we go down and see who points fingers the best.
