By AlphaSnacks Go To PostI had a 2006 A4 with the 2.0T and it was at the dealer every other week for all sorts of shit, cam issue, timing issue, misfire issue, etc. These are widely known problems with that terrible motor that made their way through every Audi and VW and basically didn't get fixed until this current 2.0T now. Truly the most unreliable motor I've ever had the displeasure of owning.Ok fair enough. I thoughyt the VAG 2.0T was considered an engine with some pretty easy gains. Is this fixed with the AE888 version or is it just the last couple of years that are more reliable?
Love the Performante, seems like a great color in daylight.
Bah, the high-pressure fuel pump went out in my 2013 Sonata and will cost over $800 to replace since my 5-year 60,000 mile warranty has long since expired (it's at 94,000 miles). :(
This was the first part that has failed on me. Hopefully the next failure won't be anytime soon.

That’s actually not the worst at your mileage as long as you caught it early. The $800 tab sucks but it’s not an uncommon failure.
By reilo Go To PostThat’s actually not the worst at your mileage as long as you caught it early. The $800 tab sucks but it’s not an uncommon failure.Yeah, I experienced symptoms of it Saturday after taking my car in for an oil change and recall notice. I went to New Orleans later that day and noticed something a little odd but not worrying. The "Check Engine" light didn't come on until I was going to the grocery store yesterday. The engine struggled to turnover and low RPM driving was worrying (power fluctuations galore).
Haven't driven it since out of paranoia of making something worse. The repair, thankfully, is supposed to take only 45 minutes and i was able to get some good work done for my job while waiting.
Good to hear it's not a big deal with my mileage. I had put on 100k miles in four years on a Civic and never had to bring it into the shop and didn't think that was typical for other cars, but didn't know how much trouble to expect on non-Civic commuter cars.
By AlphaSnacks Go To PostI think I'm like 95% certain on what my 4th (toy) car will be. A 2nd-gen Audi TT 3.2 6MT. Most likely a 2008-2011 model (I believe 3.2s stopped after then). The 2.0T in those cars is gutter trash, so I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. But the 3.2s (which are actually 3.1L) are pretty sturdy motors. The interior is also pretty spartan-ish, so electronics shouldn't be a major worry and parts are cheap.Ew
0-60 they scoot in 5 seconds. And exhaust mods on the 3.2s sound truly incredible. I'm finding a few nice examples for around $15K, which would be the goal.
Have you driven one? Cause I did. And seriously, ew. You've already got modern style and performance in spades with the F Type. You've got plenty of modern tech and sensibilities in your other cars. Why not go for something a bit more tasteful?
Why not get something a bit older with more soul? There's so many awesome cars you can get for that kind of money. E30s, E36 M3, 944, Datsun Zs, the list goes on. Prices have gone up a bit, but I even got my M5 for that. Heck, even 996 prices are pretty damn close.
Just camp BAT for a few weeks and find something that tickles your fancy. The other big upside is that you won't lose any money on it, whatever it is. And if you pick right, there's a good chance you'll actually beat inflation. Mk II TTs are still on a downward slope.
I'm hoping my car has the high pressure fuel pump issue. The symptoms I'm having lean towards it. BMW extended the warranty on that part to 10/120k. Well my car is a 08 and I'm at 117k. Have an appointment next week at dealership to get it checked as I have to get air bag replaced anyway for the recall. Advisor said if it is determined to be the HPFP, it will be replaced at no cost to me. If it's something else, then I'd have to pay the $170 diagnostic fee...

By reilo Go To Post335i? Notorious for bad HPFP. Notorious. Surprised it wasn’t recalled.
I've already had it replaced when I first got the car. I may have posted earlier about it, but basically in any low speed situation, think restaurant line or stop light, the engine will just cut off. And it's random when it happens. The battery and everything stays on but I have to start th car back up. I doesn't happen at a high rate if speed (thankfully), only in situations like the above. Also there's no service engine light on or anything. It'll just cut off. But there also times when the car will just jerk or like it misfired or something. Again, completely random.
I'm hoping it's the HPFP. But regardless I need to get it checked anyway. Car has been parked in the meantime .
Actually, it was the water pump that I replaced towards the beginning.
So if it's the fuel injectors....can that somehow be tied into the HPFP? Trying to get this thing replaced while I still have some mileage under their extended warranty.

"We had the opportunity to see and test drive the Model 3 at Tesla's showroom in Red Hook Brooklyn, NY … Fit and finish on the two demo cars we saw – perhaps not surprisingly – was relatively poor," Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote in a note to clients Friday.
"While we doubt that it would impact (or even be noticed by) most prospective buyers, we do worry that poor overall initial quality could undermine Tesla's brand and potentially overwhelm its service network."
The analyst found a misalignment in the Model 3's glass roof, body panel gaps, rubber trim issues around windows and misaligned seams in the interior ceiling of the car, according to his note.https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/10/bernstein-analyst-finds-tesla-model-3s-fit-and-finish-relatively-poor-after-test-drive.html

I happen to think the Mk II TT's are tasteful, good looking and have excellent interiors. The 3.2 is quick and has the capability to sound really good also. Bonus points for being unique and much less common than most BMW's and your run of the mill G37, 370Z, etc. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

So I'm pretty sure I want some type of camera I can mount in or on my MX-5 to start taking some video of my favorite roads. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good one for $500 or less? Looking at GoPro's website it looks like most everything they sell would do a decent job of 1080p / 60fps video but often the devil is in the details with these things and I'd like something that's user friendly and can be mounted in a variety of locations easily.
Anyone have experience with a good video camera that they like to do in-car recording with?

I think you’re limited to a GoPro, especially a GP Session coz it’s tiny.
But the problem I had with the Miata is that the windshield is almost flat so a GP and a windshield mount is definitely going to be in your face lol. What I did was mount it on the windows instead. Basically like this: https://youtu.be/kU2EGL6lG3c
But if you’re willing to drop the top then you can pretty much mount it anywhere. One of the guys I know has a mount attached to his roll bar and imo that seems to be the best way to mount a GP on a Miata.

So over the weekend I had the (very rare) opportunity to drive a Mercedes. A 2015 CLA 45 AMG. It's my aunt's car and she let me take it for a drive. I didn't really know much about it, turbo 4, AWD I think? (I didn't turn off the assists or push it too hard) Anyway, I know it's on the low end of the AMG line, and it seems like I've heard some negative things about this car, maybe even from some of you, but I really don't have the experience to compare it with anything. The car had Recaro seats which I absolutely loved, they really held you in there through the corners. Car seemed to handle very well, but like I said I didn't push it too hard. It had a 7 speed automatic with paddle shifters, which I played with quite a bit. Transmission felt good to me, the shifts were surprisingly smooth. A lot of power from the turbo 4 as well.
Had fun, I liked it a lot, but like I said I don't really have anything to compare it to.
Had fun, I liked it a lot, but like I said I don't really have anything to compare it to.
I hear it’s great to drive I just think it looks hideous. The interior is made up of left over parts from the last generation C-Class.
Damn... The ZR-1 actually looks better in the recent pictures I've seen. That magazine cover did not do it justice. Sadly most people will look at the aero not be pleased. The same people hated the ACR. I think aero on cars carries a sort of negative stigma that comes from the body kit fad from back in the day. No matter if it's 100% functional or not.

They are all of those things, but with absolutely zero soul. It feels like a driving simulator. Despite that, I wouldn't begrudge anyone getting one for a daily. In Quattro form, it'd make a killer year round car and winter beater where I live, which is why I did shop them.

Guys...guys...I don't understand these posts. In what realm are the TT and a Jag XKR remotely similar? One is a brutish, automatic, muscular luxury sports car. The other is a feather weight, the size of a children's shoe, extremely tossable and has a manual transmission. They are two entirely different cars.
I'm looking for something with a stick, folks. The XKR tickles virtually every fancy except that one.
My other consideration is a Boxster or Cayman. But reliability and cost of ownership is a concern.

My scope makes them seem relatively similar, as the scope is all fun vehicles. From where I'm sitting, they're both coupes made with modern sensibilities and electronic everything, but the Jag is actually engaging to drive.

You do you though. Aside from the manual, I just don't see why one would choose to drive that when there's a perfectly good Jag Coupe also there.
In terms of "cost of ownership", don't forget about depreciation. Getting something that's towards the bottom of its curve could offset any theoretical costs of repair. I've put ~6k into my M5 (preventative stuff + upgrades), but it's gained more than that in value since purchasing it. That's an extreme example, but speaking to the Porsche thing, it will very likely lose less value than the Audi. Porsches are generally extremely reliable as well, so I'm not sure what you're afraid of, other than the potential IMS issue.
By AlphaSnacks Go To PostI'm looking for something with a stick, folks. The XKR tickles virtually every fancy except that one.Manual 350z/370z with a turbo/supercharger!
The IMS bearing thing isn't nearly as much of an issue in the Cayman as it was in the 911 AFAIK. Less stress because it's a smaller engine. In any case, you can just get a 2009 or newer and you're set on that. I regularly spot those in the mid-high 20s around here and it'd be a damned good little side project car, as long as you have a lift if you want to wrench on it yourself. Some people actually prefer them to 981s because they have an older style of steering rack in them with a bit more feel.
In terms of reliability I'd definitely go with one of those over any Audi, at any time. Plus the weight balance is way better which matters a LOT in a car like this.

Budget is ~15K. Which is near the bottom of a TT's depreciation. Keep in mind that TTs hold value well, due to their long generational lifespan - we're only on a MK.3 car, 20 years after the debut of the first.
speaking of tts, i just took mine in for the state inspection. it passed the nys emissions test which i am thankful for even though i have a stage 2+ tune on it. the inspector did an obd2 scan which came up blank and no visual. on the downside i got home and was working in the back with the trunk lid up and someone opened the garage door. it's an older door with a hanging armature latch that scrapped an 8 in. groove into the back of the lid right where the audi logo goes. ouch. it dug all the way to bare metal, gonna take it to a body shop and get a quote tomorrow. :(
