I'm not arguing with the naming or where it originated. I'm just saying that it's a terrible name for a car nowadays.
On a similar note, another favorite of mine, the Audi A7, will soon become less distinguished. The A7 is the beautiful sister model of the A6, a car whose greenhouse reminds me of 1970s icons like the Citroën CX and the Rover SD1 and whose sharply cropped Kamm tail rear-end style evokes Italian sports cars like the Maserati Merak and Khamsin. It seems that customers have trouble with the radical tail of the A7, and so as a result, the next generation will get a more mainstream butt. I am assured it will still be a beautiful car, but my expectations have been lowered.UGH, why? That's what distinguished the A7 and made it stunning. If you had trouble with the trunk then you're a dumbass for buying the car to begin with.
By Granadier Go To PostI'm not arguing with the naming or where it originated. I'm just saying that it's a terrible name for a car nowadays. If it was that bad I doubt it would have been approved for market by Dodge. All of them are sold out according to Tim Kuniskis, head of Dodge and SRT so the name can't be that much of a detractor for the sales.
So I test drove another M4. This one being an acquaintance's car whom I know from the local cigar scene. He bought a 2015 base M4, manual transmission. It has just the Harmon Kardon audio and Comfort Access.
He had the piped in exhaust coded off, as well - and it makes being in the interior much easier, all of the unwanted noise is outside of the car now. Anyways, I drove it and I liked it waaaaay, waaaay more than the loaded model I drove months ago. DCT may be the future and all that jazz, but the fun factor of throwing gears yourself and having a clutch simply cannot be replaced. That soulless feel of the car I originally drove felt very subdued. And this is probably contrary to what everyone else would say, as critics would opt for the DCT. But not for me. The DCT made the car feel duller. It's so damn clean and perfect, that it was downright boring at times. The MT is how this car should be driven.
I've said it before, if I bought an M4, it'd be a base model with a 6MT. And I think that may be a top contender for me now. 2016's now ship with more standard equipment (both the Harmon Kardon and Comfort Access), which is very nice. And they also have the all new full-LED taillights.
In any case, looking forward to closing on my the new house already. By then incentives should be great on the M4.

this garage is amazing. Car is still with them. They've got everything back on. car won't start. Telling them i need the fucking thing for a wedding tomorrow. I have to appreciate that they've got other jobs. It's been sitting at their yard for 2 WHOLE FUCKING WEEKS already.

Well, since I'll have a real job soon, been looking at the market for a new car (mine's 12+ years old, but still doing okay). Q50S hybrid does look nice.
Can't afford a Model S atm, which would be my dream car.

need to figure out my rights regarding this fucking garage. 16 days now since it went in for a head-gasket replacement. They've got everything back on and the car won't start. Every time I've contacted or seen them i get a different excuse talking about a bent valve this, dodgy piston that, no compression whatever, on a car that drove to the garage without any issues. Now they're going to check the timing again, that was 5 hours ago.
Really want to take my fucking car back from them as i fear they've fucked something up horribly.

hopefully removing my car from the garage today and taking it to someone competent. Wish me luck lads, going to tell those fucks to small-claims me if they want to get paid for fucking things up and holding my car hostage for 2 and a half-weeks.
Always lease a German car. You don't want to own one past its warranty period and be assed out paying for all of the repairs.
I recommended a M235i to Adam. They're pretty cheap to lease and meet his reqs. Plus they're great little cars.
Is leasing really that smart? Here you have to watch out for hidden fees (easy enough), too picky retailers when you return the car and value depreciation.
I mean, it looks so comfortable to just pay a monthly fee and not worry about anything but gas but I feel it isn't that good a deal as it seems.

if you want to stay in the latest cars or not worry about maintenance yeah. i just wouldn't want to get in that cycle where you leasing your primary vehicle, and you'll never not have a car payment. not for me but some people love it.

Welp...Motor Trend just did a 3-way head-to-head: M3 vs C63 AMG S vs ATS-V.
http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/1507_bmw_m3_vs_cadillac_ats_v_sedan_vs_mercedes_amg_c63_s_comparison/
The ATS-V's trap speed is really, really odd considering its 1/4 mile time. It must be either amazing traction off the line or terrific lower gearing, with taller high gears that slow it down after triple-digits. It leaps to 30MPH half-a-second quicker than the other two. Seems like it's truly the most razor sharp and focused of all three cars.
Results:
I pretty much called it back in my M4 review when I suggested people wait on the new Ms and see how the new AMG and ATS-V turn out. I suspected that the AMG would be the better car of all three. To me, the BMW's biggest advantage is that it offers a stick, while the Merc doesn't and never will. But the noise and lunacy factor is prominent in the Merc, without resorting to any digital tricks. The interior is also much higher in quality. And clearly, the driving dynamics are more refined, as well. The W205 platform is simply better than the F3x/F8x that the M-cars are based on.

When you buy a car, you're not paying toward any kind of equity. Cars depreciate, they don't build you equity. You should lease that depreciation and pay what the depreciation amounts to. If you like the car, buy it once the lease is up.
Wonder what tires each car came with? That would be my only explanation that Caddy delivered it with something extra sticky.

Cadillac: The embodiment of American luxury. Now featuring the soul of German thoroughbreds. Designed with nothing more than a ruler.
Nope. It makes peak torque considerably higher than the others, and has a lower final drive ratio. (Look at page 3 for specs)
I suspect the low FD ratio is actually helping put power down without wheel-spin. But then hurts it as the gears keep switching up. It's most likely the gearing.

Gear ratios between the M and the ATS-V are similar in 1st gear, both with high 4s. But the Cadillac maintains higher ratios compared to the BMW. So it's the low final drive ratio and possibly the lack of a higher rev counter that likely slows the car down a bit.
On the other hand, Car and Driver ran a 1/4 with the ATS-V at 122MPH @ 12.0. So I don't fucking know what to think. But they did it likely using 93 gasoline (Michigan vs California), different climate, elevation, etc etc so it can't be really compared. It does go to show the margin of error with this kind of stuff though. Numbers can deviate quite a bit.

Buying your residual is usually not going to be cheaper than simply financing the entire value of the car, but there are certainly deals to be had. I was making a general statement about the behavior of a typical leasing customer who will trade their lease in for a new one at the end of the term.

absolutely sensational. Talked to the guy that's going to check my car out and he tells me he had a look today and that the garage fucked the timing by miles. They also managed to detension the cambelt. He's sorting it today, compression test etc to figure out if they've managed to fuck the valves and if the head needs to come off again.

Goddamn, I hurt some dude's feelings. A friend of mine (Jalopnik contributor TAVARISH) went along for a ride in a 2009 Maserati GranTurismo. He posted how amazing it handles, with a pic of the driver behind the wheel. I replied I disagreed and that the car has a pretty cheap interior and isn't worth what they go for new or used. I concluded that people are better off with a V8 Vantage.
Then I realized he tagged the driver/owner of the car LOL. And I was like 'welp...I'm not pulling back. Hopefully he isn't a bitch and ignores my comments'. So I replied again and said "Sorry if I came off strong...I didn't realize the owner was tagged?"
The owner is quick to clench his buttcheeks: "I'm assuming you have zero experience with the GT and base your assessment on...what? Forums? Magazine reviews? Your neighbors' friends' cousin used to have one and he said..."
LMAO. Dude was hurt. But hey, he called me out. So I broke it down for him:
"I've driven them more than a handful of times. A 4.2 and a 4.7. I've had a 4.7 as a rental in Miami (long story, because I picked an E-Class for dirt cheap). My best friend owns a dealership and he's had a number of them come and go from auctions, and he's taken them home every time he had one on the lot and I had to drive it when he got drunk. And my business partner used to have a 4.2, which sounded great, but was downright slow. I drove that from Atlantic City back to his house in Princeton. So I stand by my personal hands-on opinion."
Him:
"Wow! Simmah down now! Your opinion was not requested. I don't know you but you sound like an opinionated know it all. I once rented a minivan so now I'm practically a soccer mom. Also, some driving lessons might help you get the most out of a car. Don't confuse machinery with speed. The GT is quite fast in capable hands."
Me:
"Welp, you're getting awfully defensive considering you literally asked me for my opinion when you asked what my 'assessment was based on'. You actually implied i've never driven the car and was talking out of my ass. So I decided to put together a quick list of just how many times I've driven one. I've probably done well over 2000 miles in a GT. And I can assure you my driving experience is quite up to par. No need to start a pissing match. Had I known you were the owner of the car, I'd have just kept my opinion to myself. A lot of people don't like the cars I own and/or like. I don't care either way. Porsche fans rag on Jag F-Type V8Rs on every forum. I don't care. It's an opinion."
And seriously, GTs are fucking ugly and dated looking already. They haven't aged anywhere nearly as gracefully as Astons.
Anyways, I always enjoy a random FB laugh. Figured I'd share.

The E-Class rental fiasco is actually a funny story of how I got into a Maserati. I consolidated that story. It didn't happen directly to me, but rather a friend of mine 2 years ago. They were flying into Miami and I was driving from Orlando to meet them. One of them has vouchers through his job at Citibank to rent executive luxury cars from Hertz or Alamo (I think?). Anyways, he flies in, goes to MIA's rental car area and they told him they didn't have any E-Classes left. All they had was a C250 Benz...and he's like "uhh, that's not an executive car. Do you have any 5-series or something?" They said no. So he refuses to take the C250 and asks for the manager.
Manager comes and says "the next E-class will be back in 2 days, if we gave you a Maserati GranTurismo for the time being, will that be okay"?
I pulled up to FountaineBleau and see this motherfucker pointing at a black Masi. Needless to say, that car had a VERY rough 2 days at my hands and his too. He drinks. I don't. So I went to town on that bitch every time we went out. He basically drove it once a day, and me three times. Also didn't have the best gearbox either, old-hat ZF6 speed that had nowhere near the brains and calibration of the same unit as my Jaguar XF 5.0.
Just about the only good Masi GT is the MC Stradale and/or Sport. But they came way down the line as 2012+ models in the US. Both are fairly similar, but the MC is a lot more driver focused and also weighs 200lbs less. But at least they finally had a ballsier 460HP.

The F-Type V8R is my next coupe. It's my favorite thing in the world, as Reilo put it. I'm just waiting to close on my new house before I toy around with finances. I'm also in the predicament of waiting on my company to sell. I just acquired some more shares in it, which is awesome. It's enough shares to buy 5 F-Types if the sales goes well. But I don't know how far away the sale will be, and I'm getting impatient. Don't want to lease the car and pay $1000 a month. Nor do I want to get a loan and be stuck with interest.

By Storm Go To PostStylistically Jags haven't faired well under Ian Callum least compared to Geoff Lawson's designs, least the coupes. Sedans have always looked rather inelegant.
Wtf...that's just about the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Lawson gave us such wonderful designs as the S-Type, X-Type, and the old XJ. His one true beauty was the XJ220, but that's where it ended. He made Jaguar's designs stale and irrelevant. Ian Callum literally saved the entire company with the revitalization of the XK and creation of the XF. Dumping the outdated styling cues that harkened too far back into Jaguar's tumultuous history and forced designers to work around outdated aesthetics allowed the brand to actually evolve.
We have an all new XJ that looks nothing like a 1970s XJ. We have the F-Type that embodies the spirit of the E-Type, but doesn't stand in its shadow. Callum's cars are far and away better than Lawson's. This is literally the first time I've read or heard anyone say the opposite.

A bit of an update.
The current mechanic found 4 bent to fuck valves. Replaced them. Pistons were all fine, no loss of compression due to any of them being loose or fucked. Car runs "sweet as a nut" in the mile and a half he drove it after reassembling the head.
There's an issue with water circulation in the engine that he's looking at right now, as in it's not getting around. He asked if the last mechanic did anything else and i told him they replaced the thermostat, so he's laughing down the phone that the guy likely put it in upside down so he's going to sort it out. Not a big job but it's a saturday. Looking like i'll get my MG back monday. Likely just a huge fucking airlock but know the previous mechanic an upside down thermo sounds about right.
Big difference to the old mechanic who's line of bullshit went like this:
"Loose piston not worth doing headgasket lol we'll do it anyway"
1 bent valve that they didn't think needed changing, even though we told them to (for the sake of £4)
"low compression in cylinder 2 lol dodgy piston m8"
"2 bent valves guys not 1 lol our story's falling apart"
"Timing is fine we did everything right we had 4 mechanics look at this including the best mechanic in Leamington!!!!!!"
Timing is actually waaaaaaay fucked, leading to valves bending when they try to tow start the fucking car 4 times.
