Final Fantasy VIII was the first game in the franchise to make the jump to realistic proportioned characters. It brought gorgeous visuals and breathtaking FMV's which was another new for the series. The games use of pre rendered backgrounds was wonderfully done with so many unique and interesting locations to explore. The game chose to focus heavily on the main protagonists thoughts, something we also hadn't seen in previous games.
The battle system was changed quite a bit from the previous installment's . Adding in a levelling system that challenges you by allowing monsters to gain levels whenever Squall does and a complex junction system with many customizable options that allows various play styles. Guardian Forces were a huge component to the battle system as they allowed players to junction magic onto their party's stats thus increasing their power. GF's also learn abilities that can be used in battle AND outside such as the No-Encounter ability giving players the option to avoid random battles all together.

Discuss anything you want in here about VIII. The thread can probably even be the OT for ps4 launch when it's announced if everyone wants. I've removed most of the soundtrack part so the thread isn't as cluttered on here as it originally was. I might even change some of the headers to fit more in with the forum here but otherwise let's all love this wonderful game.
Wonderful thread for a wonderful game. I’ve recently been replaying this on Steam with some graphical upgrade mods and the game looks so good. This is the first game I remember playing (I think I six or seven, my aunt introduced me) and I’ve made sure to play it once every year since.. and somehow, I still have never done absolutely everything in the game. I’m always finding new stuff.
Huge FF fan here. 7's my fav, but 8 is the one I've beaten the most (love the Junction and Draw systems). Really hoping it's re-released on the PS4 as well. Zell's my favorite non main character-character in a FF series.
The fascinating part about VIII is how easy it is to find something new every time it's replayed. Talking to many different NPC's or triggering different events that are harder to see is one of my favourite parts about replaying it. I remember it took me awhile to actually see Instructor Aki who can appear at multiple different points. It's just a ton of fun and then the whole battle system offering so many different play styles it's really great.
My favourite right here. Fresh from my first FF back then (7, late to the party), I took a plunge on JP version without understanding a damn thing or a translated guide and it remains a fond memory of my teen years. I beat it with sheer patience alone, lmao. I don't think I even had any -ga spells or upgraded a weapon.
Which is why when I finally managed to get my hands on the localized version, it felt so damn good.
Here's hoping we'll see the PS4 port in the near future. I'd easily set aside any games just to relive this masterpiece again.

I will need to give a proper retrospective once I have a wee bit more free time, but this was one of my favorites growing up. So many emotions.
The idea of achievements for VIII has me super excited. It's going to make replaying it even more fun so hopefully that PS4 announcement is soon. There's no way they don't have one planned.

So many emotions.I would definitely like to see your retrospective! VIII has it's issues like many games but there's so many fantastic elements and it's truly one of the most ambitious titles in the series.
The first time I played it was the demo that came with the platinum version of Final Fantasy VII. I remember being amazed by the FMVs. I still think they are impressive today. Edea is also one of my fave FF character designs.
Anyway, saving my next playthrough of it for when the PS4 version is released.

I wonder if square is going to make a little physical disc collection once they rerelease FFVIII on ps4.
When FFVIII was first unveiled, it blew my mind. Realistically proportioned characters, full-screen battles (no more menus blocking off 1/3 of the screen) and that intriguing contemporary aesthetic. Then the demo disc came out with Brave Fencer Mushashi and I played it so much. The music for the opening sequence, sadly, was changed for the final version - the original track was very similar to a Hans Zimmer film OST, apparently.
Played the game, and besides the some more nonsensical plot elements, loved it. Quistis is my favourite, and I really really love the camaraderie between Laguna, Ward and Kiros.
Back then, the internet was still young and there was a gaming website called TheGIA that pulled off a cruel hoax - that there would be a direct sequel to FFVIII called Final Fantasy Gaiden, focusing on Seifer, Raijin and Fujin, complete with screenshots and a mock logo.

I have been trying to play through this game for years. It just never quite grabs me. Maybe I just don't get the intricacies of the battle system? I dunno.
I liked the rationale behind the junctioning system. While traditionally you are not penalized for draining your mp apart from the inability to cast a spell and use a skill, in this game the more you use magic, the more it weakens you giving a sense of mp loss.
I grew up playing JRPG being prudent with spellcasting and mp management so it didn't bother much (I was young and naive back then, thinking physical ATK would carry me in most games) but I could understand why people hated it and how it got in the way of their enjoyment.

This was a missed opportunity that Square has a chance to rectify with a remake. Take the FFXV route and make this a world. Flesh it out more with new characters, multiple endings, anime, manga, smartphone games, movies, music, books etc.
They could make an entire anime season off the school aspect alone with it ending as the world expands outside of the school.
I loved everything until the end of the first disc. The star of the game are the Moogles. Was the alternate ending rumor true?

I totally loved ffviii though I haven't played it in like 15 years. I remember playing a demo disc of it before release and immediately being drawn (lol) in. What a great cast of characters. And I don't care what anyone says about this, but I still feel like it was the best told love story in any videogame.
I got this way back but had to return it because my PC couldn't play it, I think. Would probably enjoy playing through for the first time in an updated PS4 version.
Still disappointed that the Rinoa is Ultimecia theory wasn't true.... Was the only redeeming factor to play through the game.
My high school girlfriend showed me FF9. I was confused why it looked nothing like that FF7 I'd heard so much about. Went to the store, cheapest used FF was FF8, so that became my first FF.
I found it enjoyable, but didn't get the junction system at all, hit a wall, and quit. This was, after all, my first jrpg too, besides Pokemon.
Tried again years later, did better, but didn't have time to keep with it, being an adult.
Years later again, I did some reading on breaking the junction system, had a blast doing this, left on a trip and when I came back, adulthood and priorities struck again.
I want to beat it someday. I want to beat a whole lot of games someday. We'll see if it ever happens.

VIII has a very special place in my heart. I think it has the best overall OST (with some fantastic outstanding tracks) and I really liked the world.
VIII is my second favorite after VII. I never could get into IX. I guess I am one of those freaks that prefer the sci-fi setting FF's over the steampunk/fantasy.
FFVIII
Is the one final fantasy that could benefit from a remaster or remake. It has probably my favorite setting of fantasy based on reality at this point. The schools and stuff was some of the coolest stuff. Balamb garden was a very different setup compared to any other final fantasy.
Irving’s school was wicked too!
Man, I really, really wished this one got more love. The only thing they need to do is bring back a classic level system where everything didn’t scale....it was weird to play a game where overleveling could actually hurt you if you didn’t junction correctly.
This game to me still has the best summon animations out of any final fantasy and I want to see Edens 79 second summon in full remake glory

By Meowster Go To PostAlso, I think Rinoa is Nomura’s best design.Totally agree. Such a great design.
Edea is second.
Edea is amazing. I love her makeup.
By viciousds Go To PostFFVIIIThe summons in VIII are my favourite. Cerberus, Eden, Carbuncle, Odin and Diablos are so great and seeing that in HD would be glorious.

My biggest scare of an VIII remake is changing the appearances of characters. VIII's FMV style is perfect to use for a remake but I fear we will get something plastic looking like Dissidia.
It was my first every Final Fantasy. I remember thinking Edea was hot and Rinoa was cute (so embarrassing) I really really loved that game, first game I played wich had such a deep and grande story. Even though FFIX is my favorite, VIII will always have a special place in my heart.
Having bought and played thru both PS4 ports of 7 and 9, I'd definitely snatch up a port of 8 were it to launch next year
I'm totally fascinated with this game! Sadly, don't have a PSP or Vita so I would love a PS4 port also.
I'd highly recommend Kim Justice's lengthy, multi-part retrospective if you're like me and can't currently play it.

Luckily I missed this, my younger self would have completely fell for it.
Though FFX is my favorite (and the best :P), FFVIII will always be very nostalgic for me and have a place in my heart. I was very young when I played FFVII for the first time, so I could never get past the first disc. But I got to disc 3 in FFVIII before I lost it, so I have many memories with the game (I beat the game at a later age).
I'll echo what others have said about Edea's character design. It's marvelous.
Also about the music. FFVIII's music is miles ahead of other fan favorites such as FFVII and FFVI.
