good thread! games workshop sucks
I am actually talking to a friend of mine to commission him to paint up all the figures in the somewhat recent DOOM boardgame for me.

Doom boardgame looks great fun - those minis should be great painted too. Why not give them a go yourself?

By Kibner Go To PostBecause I'm not terribly good and my friend is award-winning good.Fair enough! Can't argue with that, but I'd say some of the monsters in Doom would be a really great start in mini painting as they're largely one colour. Bit of bright red, then a deep red wash and you'd be most of the way to a great looking mini

By Mikeside Go To PostDefinitely post those once they're done :)You best believe I'm going to be spamming those images everywhere once they are done! lol
Just got into miniature wargaming back earlier in the year with a game called relic knights. Started by using other people's squads before buying my own and putting them together. About a month ago I tried painting them for the first time and here were my results.
Not as awesome as I've seen others do but I am happy with what I managed to do for a first time. I just wish I had more free time to actually play the game more often. Only three people into relic knights where I live and time/health/transportation issues stop me from playing as much.
Sort of wish I had the money to get into 40k since that game seems much more popular and easier to find people into.
Never knew there was a doom tabletop game tho. Minis for it look dope.

Last year I pledged for a copy of kingdom death in its reprint kickstarter, and that just arrived this week. I've now got a heap of minis to learn to paint.
I bought a reaper minis learn to paint kit and a couple cheap extra minis to go with it.
Let me tell you, these first skeletons are not going well.
So how do I do image hosting? Never really done it despite being addicted to forums for a decade now.

Hi all!
I play a range of games using miniatures - boardgames, RPG etc. I used to be really into Warhammer Fantasy during 7th/8th edition, but AoS killed off any lingering interest. My regular gaming group also weren't into wargaming, but this looks to be changing with the upcoming release of the AsoIaF wargame, which I'm keen to get into.
Here's some stuff I've painted, not my best work necessarily. Included a couple of minis from Doom I painted for a friend given the convo above.
I also really love making terrain!

By Rhythmaxed Go To PostWow your terrain looks amazing especially the camp site! Thanks! I've accumulated a lot of it because I find it so fun to make, but rarely get to use it unfortunately. Hoping with the revival of my wargaming group it will get some more use... though to be honest I'm a bit worried because it is designed more for skirmish games than games with bases... for which it is far from ideal.

The best advice I can give is to thin your paints down and make good use of washes and drybrushing for that extra detail!

I'll have to look into Relic Knights (not that I have time for another game!)

For those into podcasts, "Miniatures Monthly" is a great new podcast hosted by 2 ex-PC Gamer writers.
Its a spin off of a gaming podcast that they also host "Crate and Crowbar", I highly recommend both.
I bought the Dark Imperium box a couple months back and have successfully painted.... 1 model so far. Ill be ready for a game in 4 years time I think.

Yeah I have to admit I’m very intimidated by the idea of painting a whole army. I’m totally new to it, so it’s still a slow process, learning as I go.
My strategy is going to be to pick a few lynchpin units to start (for Tau I’m thinking 2x commander, 1x Stormsurge and surround them with 2x gun drone squad, 1x stealth suit squad, 2x FIre Warrior squad, 1x Ethereal, 1x Cadre Fireblade), then just powering through all those units tirelessly with paint so I can play ~1k point games. Then I can take my time expanding it piece by piece.
I don’t want to end up never playing games because I burn out on painting before I ever get going.

Then start painting models you find interesting. Once you've got a bit of experience you'll be able to get basic squads painted fairly quickly and a 1k point army suddenly won't be so intimidating anymore
Edit: I just found an image of a piece of terrain I made earlier this year. Quite proud of it!
I would be too, that monolith looks really good.
Terrain isn’t something I’ve ventured into yet, but definitely will when I’ve got a little army I can play. I’m gonna check out that YT channel you linked.
I’m going to the GW store this week to learn basing techniques. I wanna do all my guys with a “red planet” look on their bases—dusty red rocks and rusty metal chunks—think it’ll match the 70’s sci-fi aesthetic of the Tau

I think GW will tell you to use their textured paint, but it doesn't have to be so expensive! (and can look way better!)
I would suggest you get some gravel, kitty litter or anything like that then water down some PVA glue and slather your base in it. Put down the rocks you've got, wait for it to dry, then give it a good shake to get rid of loose ones. If it seems a bit thin on the ground, do a second later, then if you want, superglue some slightly larger rocks on top to make it look a bit more dynamic and varied. Once you're done, another layer of PVA, then you can paint it. Liberal use of washes will give some real depth to it.
If you really want to up your game, there's loads more you can do too, but this is a good simple start.
What I do is to rip out a rough bit of cork from a cork sheet I bought, put that directly on the base with glue, then rough it up with a craft knife a bit. I then use some gravelly bits as mentioned above, then add any debris I want (spare limbs, weapons and general bits from sprues are great for this)
Then I'll do all my painting, then finish off with maybe a bit of static grass.
Here's a couple of mine in various states of progress:

In terms of bulk painting the key I find is to work out techniques that give you bang for your buck.
Preshading, washes (Army Painter quickshade or equivalent is even better), drybrushing, all are really good for getting your stuff looking good, quickly.
I suggest painting in batches of 5 or 6, finishing troops first and rewarding yourself with characters/heavy weapons etc. (the advantage of this is also that you'll be better at painting by the time you reach em)
I like to watch TV while I paint, usually shows I've watched before and like. I wrote this for anyone interested:
Stuff to Buy getting started.
Minimum for painting:
Plastic clippers or a craft knife (ideally both, for assembly and mold lines)
Matte spray primer (black or white, should be around $5-10 from Bunnings)
One good brush
Plastic glue
Paints: skin tone, colour of your armies uniform, metallic colour, brown colour, brown or black wash.
Sand/dirt (free)
Twigs (free)
PVA glue
For bulk, speed and convenience:
Army painter quick shade strong tone
Matte varnish (testors dullcoate or similar)
Coloured primer (uniform tone or metallic, former usually better)
Modelling sand (for bases)
Metal files
Level up:
3 tones of main colours of paint used - mid, shade/base, highlight
Grass Tufts for bases
Range of washes
Technical effects (blood, gore, rust, corrosion, verdigris)
Hobby saw for conversions
Acrylic medium
Hobby drill for pinning minis
Next level:
Resin bases
Airbrush
Kolinsky Sable brushes
Brush cleaner and preserver
Scale 75 paint sets
Magnetic basing system
General advice:
Never buy from games workshop directly, everywhere else will have at least 10% off gw products.
Paint brands are a matter of personal preference - Vallejo, minitaire, Citadel, p3 are all good... But you have to use miniature paints, house paint is no good for anything save terrain.
Water down your paints, don't use them straight out of the bottle unless you want to obscure all the details on your minis.
Learn to batch paint - paint 3-5 minis at a time for speed.
Use techniques like washes and coloured primers to speed up painting time.
A good base makes an average mini punch above its weight.
Your "rank and file" only need to look good from far off, you won't be looking at them close up often. Having bold colours and coherent basing is the best way to achieve this 'tabletop standard.'
Glossary:
Mold lines - unsightly lines on miniatures from the molding process, best removed with a knife or file
Primer- paint which goes on first for the other paint to stick to. Can be coloured to save time
Wash - thinned down paint used to accentuate depth and make miniatures look 3d.
Bases - what the miniature stands on. Has to be coated with sand and painted at a minimum. Resin bases are themed and make miniatures look great, making them look like they're on a field of skulls, a glacier, lava etc. A cheaper alternative is cork and grass Tufts (grass that can be glued on bases to make them more lifelike)
Matte varnish - used to protect miniatures once they are painted and/or remove any shine from washes or armypainter quickshade. Shiny minis look terrible.
Acrylic medium - used to dilute paints in a way that improves their flow but does so better than regular water.
All this can seem intimidating at first but generally following tutorial videos and the like will have you painting great looking minis in no time.

Thankfully, the guy at the GW I go to isn’t much of a brand whore, he’s recommended Tamiya, Vallejo, etc. products to me.

All great advice, but the main thing is this.
And even if you paint a few minis and they don't look great - that's the first step to improving (and it's not too hard to strip them in Dettol/Simple Green and start again once you get better!)
By Mikeside Go To PostAll great advice, but the main thing is this. This is very true. Though I wish I got a lot of this advice back in the day, no one told me about mould lines or thining my paints and everything looked trash.

This YouTube generation has it good I tell ya.
I'm still a bit lazy with mould lines half the time, but thinning paints is non-negotiable.
Hell, I'm still not very good, but on the table they look more than acceptable to me!

I think the distance between the eye and the tabletop does a lot generally. Picking a good colour scheme and decent basing and the details don't need to matter that much imo.

I made my own version of their "Ironcrust Earth" by mixing a bit of red paint into Vallejo's "Brown Earth" texture mix. That and some gears from watches would be a cheap and effective basing scheme.
My current IMGUR painting gallery. Hopefully it can be viewed. Currently in the process of painting Gabriel Angelos that just came in from ETSY (https://www.etsy.com/se-en/listing/521856908/28mm-wargaming-and-collectible-miniature). Really amazing model to say the least.

Only suggestion is to drill out the barrels :D makes a huge difference imo.
Agreed. :) I will do that this week. I have to be less lazy when it comes to a few quality additions to the minis.
By Mikeside Go To PostI was surprised how much difference barrel drilling made tbh.Having spent most of my time painting fantasy minis, I am yet to get the hang of it.
Barrel drilling meaning putting holes in your gun barrels to make them look like guns? Probably a good idea. I just got a pin Vice last weekend to pin my models to cork holders, surprised me how easy it is to get a nice clean little 1mm opening.
Just found this today, incredible resource for Vallejo paints.
Guy hand painted dozens of colors to lay out “triads” of tones that work well together as base/later/highlight. Gonna be referencing the shit out of these in the future!

Has anyone here played Warmachine/Hordes?
Really thinking about picking up this humble bundle RPG book bundle which has a bunch of rulebooks and adventures for the RPG as well as coupons for the starter boxes for the wargaming side of the game. Looks like its a bit more popular than Relic knights so I might be able to find more people to play it with without needing a giant expensive army like it looks like 40k needs. That and the steampunk mechs look cool :)
Anyone here a player? If yes is it enjoyable?

Yeah Warmachine is the miniatures game I play. No experience with the RPG but the full game is great. And they just today launched this skirmish-level (dozen-ish models) game “Company of Iron” that uses all the same models. All the rules for Warmachine are free at PrivateerPress.com/rules. Warmachine is pretty good for growing an army. Can play small games in Company of Iron or battlegroup or Rumble, and then “full” games in Steamroller.
You don’t strictly need the humble bundle, it’s mostly RPG books and novels. The rules are available at the link above, tho the rulebooks included in the bundle are a bit larger than the free editions and will contain fluff and painting guides on top of game rules.

Oh wow that is an awesome way of doing it, only really needing to pay for the models themselves. Probably still get that bundle since I am also a big pen and paper RPG fan as well.
That and the Coupons makes those starter boxes a good deal. :O

Feels like the XV86 Coldstar Commander is about done.
Maybe some final edge highlighting on the gun.

Went in on the iron kingdom humble bundle stuff and got two starter boxes. (Cygnar and cryx specifically)
Going to try the game out with a friend hopefully. Even if I don't get into the wargame tho the minis should be useful for the rpg which seems pretty interesting so far as well. Totally want to try out the rpg at some point.

1) I’m happy (& eager!) to talk about the future wargame as y’all get started. Also the Reddit warmachine sub is pretty solid and there’s a dedicated forum at lormahordes.freeforums.net.
2) I’d love to hear RPG impressions. I have a group of friends who might starts up roleplaying soon. We’re still trying to settle on a system.

What do you dudes like for grass tufts on your bases? Finally decided on what I’m going to do and ready to start basing, but its my first go at this so I could use some fingers pointing me in the right direction. Want to avoid Citadel products, shits just too much money. Their plastic skull/leaf set is 75 usd!
This pic really nails the look I’m going for:
So I think I’ll need some green grass fuzz, a little earth (maybe Vallejo Brown Earth?), yellow sand-colored tufts across one edge for the wheat, and for the rocks I’ll try shading them in a soft blue grey and dry brushing them in a pale gold to give the impression of a blue sky above.
Any thoughts or advice on how you’d go about achieving this? Much appreciated my dudes
