Turns out its English name is Arrival.
really enjoyed it
Kong is great. Fantastically paced, has the perfect aware/light tone and the acting is mostly great. (Although Tom Hiddleston as the brooding straight man/central action hero is out of place, especially since he's mostly just kinda there.) There's a lot of Kong right from the jump, so that will satisfy those weirdos that don't like Godzilla.
By rodeoclown Go To PostKong is great.

🤔
By s y Go To Postkong was fucking fun as hellIt's really one of the more well done blockbusters I've seen in a while. It breezes by, the action set pieces are awesome, it's really nice to look at. By not being so sullen and self-serious, it captures this perfect tone that's a nice contrast to Godzilla. Lots of people are turning in really good work (I really liked Jason Mitchell here and was really excited to see him not playing Eazy E).
Mostly, Kong is as advertised. Kong is on the screen all the time, he fights a lot of monsters, he wrecks shop.
Song to Song premiere tonight. First showing here is on the 24th.
Pretty excited. Looks a lot better than Knight of Cups.

Outside of the last fight really, you will be bored to tears.
This was some of the most hamfisted and too cool for school cinematography I've ever seen. Its like fake ass Michael Bay and fake ass Quentin Tarantino had a heroin dependent baby and someone wrote a blank check for it. I've seen a lot of shit, but goddamn this was a dumb movie.

The only good part in the movie is a Sam Jackson line near the end. That's it.
Also good on Jing Tian for cashing these checks.

Really enjoyed it.
Going to see see Kong tomorrow morning followed by Manchester by the sea.
I don't know why, but I have really been on a cinema kick the last week.

I really enjoyed Kong. I thought it was really nice seeing him straight off the bat, usually these types of movies slowly introduce the monster, but he was straight from the go.
Watched Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival.
Hacksaw Ridge was really well shot and had some great scenes, allthough some overexposure at times.
I enjoyed that it wasn't filled entirely with pathos about patrotism. Despite the nature of the character, the religious stuff was far too much.
Especially the last scene from the battlefield was just shit...
Still a rather good movie and Gibson should tackle a subject that isn't filled with religious stuff.
Arrival was also pretty good.
The general mood and setting are fitting. If you combine that with a rather serious tone and the characters, it's a wonderful composition.
Even though the gloomy nature of the movie, it has some wonderful statements.
Really looking forward to Bladerunner now.

The Disaster Artist had an incredible reception at SXSW with some people claiming that it had the biggest standing ovation they witnessed at the festival.
Reviews have been extremely positive with some people even saying that James Franco might have a shot at an Oscar nomination.

yessssssssssss kent is the business. babadook is so good.
The Nightingale, a period thriller written and directed by The Babadook writer-director Jennifer Kent, will move forward with Bron Creative executive producing and co-financing.
Starring Aisling Franciosi and Sam Claflin, The Nightingale is set in Tasmania in 1825 and follows a beautiful 21-year-old Irish female convict who witnesses the brutal murder of her husband and baby by her soldier master and his cronies. Unable to find justice, she takes an Aboriginal male tracker with her through the hellish wilderness to seek revenge on the men, and gets much more than she bargained for. Damon Herriman, Ewen Leslie, Harry Greenwood, Aboriginal Djuki Mala dancer Baykali Ganambarr and East Arnhem Land indigenous model Magnolia Maymuru co-star.
I liked Babadook but didn't go loopy for it. Despitr The Shining being my favourite film, horror's generally my least favourite genre; it's normally so cheap and exploitative, so it has to blow me away to impress me. The Witch really really blew me away.
Kent is great though, did an excellent job on the Babadook even if it did run out of steam.

By reilo Go To PostThey pushed the movie because Avatar 2 moved from that date.
They better hope Wonder Woman and Bateman are good…
The word is that WB wants to shoot another movie this year alongside Aquaman. Whatever it's closer to being ready from Sirens, Green Lantern, Flash, Suicide Squad 2 and League Of Justice Dark, will get fast-tracked but only if the scripts are done, otherwise WB would be OK with just having Aquaman from the DCEU to release in 2018.
I really liked this short video Netflix released :
I hope they'll release more videos about The Other Side Of The Wind, there were rumors they were doing a documentary about it.

Fair.
Think the Witch and Babadook work in different ways. My fav type of horror - skillfull, quiet, lingering, physiological that plays upon the unsaid as much as they do the directed, loud moments.
Under The Shadow and The Falling another two of favs in this ilk.
Also my man know you are a big Dominik fan - you seen this?

Tom Hardy and Dominik sounds delicious, although this feels too safe for him. Shall see.
IDK how I feel about Skull Island. I agree with Rodeo and DY. There are parts of it that are worthwhile and make it the exact big monsters kicking the shit out of each other fest I wanted, but then there are parts that are just... really?
Most notably, the one thing that really should've been cut/re-imagined was the graveyard scene.

Skull Island was OK. I didn't pay close attention outside of the monster fights and Sam Jackson's scenes though. Didn't need more than that to enjoy it. Really good looking movie.
John Wick 2 was great though. I didn't think they would top the action of the first one, but they did. Fishburne was hammy as fuck. The only thing I didn't like about it was that the mirror nonsense went on too long. Also, Common isn't an actor, he's a line reader. It's a shame that they let his character live. He's somehow more wooden than Keanu here, which shouldn't be possible.

Finally got round to watching High-Rise and it was p good.
Watched Rogue One which was completely forgettable and didn't justify its existence.

Watched Patriots Day this weekend. I liked, even with some serious flaws. The bombing scene was terrifying to watch.
Still feels weird to have a movie about the Boston bombing so soon.

Being such a huge fan of The Raid and The Raid 2, I watched Headshot yesterday. Not nearly as good IMO but really enjoyed it

Seeing Beauty and the Beast and Kong today. Nothing else out that interests me. Good first quarter for cinema this year though.

Loved Song to Song. Had a real energy that has been missing in his last two. Left the theater feeling ecstatic.
Malick makes people having fun so infectious.
There are some real weak moments. Any time an actor is on screen alone and walking around an empty, beautiful house and the voice over is spewing, it's a slog. For a guy that studied philosophy at Harvard and Oxford, he really doesn't have anything interesting to say. Some of it is so cliche it's laughable. At times it feels so serious and artificial that I wonder how often Malick interacts with people. Like, what is it like to get a beer with Malick?
Overall though the moments with Rooney, Gosling and Fassbender are so strong that it overcomes the weak moments and is just captivating.
Understand why people don't like this style. If you didn't like To The Wonder or Knight of Cups I'd be surprised if you like Song to Song.
Gosling is so fucking charming.

Beauty and the Beast was very good. A bit on the nose with the animated film but it's well told.
The sfx of the world and cast is incredible for the most part, although the effects on Dan Stevens face varies from scene to scene depending on the environment. I also didn't think the ballroom scene was as grand as I remember the cartoon being. It was good and short but seemed to lack something to make it standout.
The gay character was so nothing that I can't believe it was even mentioned prior to release. It's implied but never really thrown in your face until the very final scene. It was handled very well.
I also wasn't aware of all the top actors they hired for the voiceovers. They all play their parts and really do add to the experience along with the high quality special effects.

Yo, Get Out was great. For a first time filmmaker to show that much restraint, audacity and ingenuity in his pacing and plotting is real good. Sound effects and sound direction was class too.
Think it was bang on in terms of its approach to the subject; hit the mark between racism, rhe weird fetishising of black people and those like Root's character who don't give a shit about colour yet don't give a fuck enough about black people to give a shit.
Proper solid.

Kong was good fun until the last thirty minutes. That entire third act went from big budget B movie, to just B movie. Theatre was laughing as people were dying it was so corny.
Hiddleston was completely wrong here too. I think someone mentioned that earlier. He's fine for something like The Night Manager, and he might make a fine Bond, but here he was too stiff and felt out of place. Like he was the straight man in a comedy, but he thought he was doing Hamlet in the West End. He easily drew the most awkward laughs from the crowd I was in. From the moment he started swinging the sword in the bone pit is when the film took a turn for the worst.
Reilly absolutely killed it though. Saved the film from itself really.
And lol at the Asian scientist. At the end everyone in the boat is covered in blood and sweat and she's spotless with a crisp shirt, fresh makeup and without a hair misplaced. Small thing but it really stood out.

nowt yet just slated for this year - and aye got the usual mcdonagh regs who are always cracking
speaking of whom - there's a new Lanthimos film on the way this year too with fucking c.farrell.
The Killing of A Sacred Deer.
Lanthimos co-writes and directs the project, inspired by a Euripides tragedy, which centers on Steven, a charismatic surgeon and a teenage boy who seeks to integrate him into his broken family. When the boy’s actions become increasingly sinister, Steven’s ideal life starts to fall apart and he is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice.

People, watch this. Stunning art and animation and a touching story.
There's no dialogue in it so whatever release you watch it doesn't matter.
Apparently Ghibli had some hand in this but Im glad it looks nothing like a ghibli film.
