It's not directed by Antoine Fuqua. Dude sucks at his job
I rewatched clerks and some of Kevin Smith's other movies and I'm beginning to think Clerks being a good movie was an accident because all of his other stuff isn't even close. Like Mallrats is maybe the closest, and it's just a slightly above average 90s comedy.
By Ciaran Go To PostI quite enjoyed John Wick 2 from start to finish but I thought the first one was much better.
the novelty wearing off I guess
the shootout sequence with the mobs in Italy felt…padded
Glad to hear it's a trilogy!!!
I watched the first one right when I came home from 2, first one has the benefit of introducing the universe but besides that I still fee tonally it handles the universe better.

Kevin Smith sucks, yea
At the end, Winston might have flexed harder than any other character in an action film. lol
John Wick 2 is dope, but I feel like it could borrow from a page of The Raid 2. It's honestly a nitpick (and it works for how they tell the story), but it has to do with Common's character. By the time Rama has to fight Hammer Girl, Bat Boy, and The Assassin (in the Raid 2), the anticipation is off the charts, because they were all shown to have been as skilled as Rama. Here, Commonis kind of dropped into the mix and they expect you to buy into it right away. It goes from " Oh shit! it's CASEY FUCKING RYBACK" to, "by the way, here is the palette swap of Wick" at the drop of a dime. It didn't really work for me, though I did enjoy his scenes.I guess I'll have what I want for part 3, but ehh. I kind of wish they did more with Ruby's scenes as well.
The movie is flames. I don't know how the fuck he's going to handle his situation in the next film.

The best thing about John Wick is that in part 2 his wife has only been dead for a week or two. So John is killing dude after a few days of being at war. Prime John Wick must have been a motherfucker
I was actually really relieved to hear that Kevin Smith's sequel projects aren't getting made (Clerks 3, Mallrats 2). I haven't liked anything that dude has done in a long time and now that he's this wake and bake stoner, his movies are worse than ever.
holy fuck this is going to be a fucking corker
look at that cast
Adapted from the French graphic novel by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin, “The Death of Stalin” is a comic look at how Joseph Stalin’s stroke in 1953 threw the USSR into chaos and inspired a mad power grab among his top advisers.
Iannucci, who earned critical acclaim for “In the Loop,” “Veep,” and “The Thick of It,” wrote the screenplay of “Death of Stalin” with David Schneider and Ian Martin with additional material by Peter Fellows.

Keanu is younger so the action scenes look more crisp. Denzel is basically ethnic Steven Seagal at this point in his career.

Omg this will be amazing
can't wait
John Wick was more of the same but I appreciate that they attempted to add to the world and overall lore. It's all so absurd, yet, is handled with an air of normality that just kind of works for what they're going for. Ian McShane also helps as he makes everything better.
Also, I liked that they used the World Trade Center metro hub. Place is incredible in person and looked great in the movie. It's perfect for this universe and it's a real place now!
Lego Batman was enjoyable. I didn't think all of the humor hit, but it's a kids movie designed to sell toys, so that's easy to overlook.
The actual core comic book story was pretty strong. It's very, very over the top; however, the combination with the Superman Universe (Phantom Zone) and other WB IPs was clever.

Joe Carnahan is taking on The Raid.
Carnahan and actor Frank Grillo shared an Instagram video Wednesday announcing the project, which would reimagine the groundbreaking 2011 Indonesian martial arts film.
"It's not a remake. It's a reimagining of the same scenario. Everybody take a deep breath. We won't disappoint you, rabid-fanboy-from-Hell," Carnahan tweeted. "You can't remake The Raid, guys. It's a fantastic film. So, ask yourselves why would we be doing it, unless we had something really special."

Not sure how I feel.
Raid 2 is still the best though.

There's already a Raid remake, it's called Dredd.
By Splatt Go To PostThere's already a Raid remake, it's called Dredd. While Dredd came out after The Raid, it actually was filmed a few months before The Raid started shooting.

So long. Such tedious drama. Some excellent action scenes but it made up around half of the film if not less. Even that fight at the end in the kitchen got tedious. Was far too long and had far too lofty aspirations for its quality.

Yeah, I know, I just wanted to take the opportunity to plug a quality movie here

Just saw Moonlight.
Technically extraordinary; its look and sound is gorgeous, its performances so naturalistic and warm. Ali and Rhodes especially are remarkably good.
I feel like its a film that was a little too restrained and a little too personal to hit me where it should have, similar to Manchester By The Sea in the former regard (although very clearly more niche and specific to gay/black/gay and black people's identity struggle than to trauma alone as in Manchester).
That sounds really stupid, because fucking Moana almost made me cry and I am not a Polynesian girl who just wants to know what the sea feels like. But that's a very obvious pull for your emotions.
The hysteria and panic around something like Fruitvale Station, for instance, made me tear up because despite the verisimilitude of the film being so realistic, it was playing by 'cinematic' rules; hectic camera movements, intense acting, a flurry of cuts.
Moonlight is a lot more restrained and for me, I didn't subdue to the emotion as much as I think i would have had I a) identified more with Chiron and b) Jenkins had manipulated me a little more.
And all of that to say I know that isn't what Jenkins was intending to do and I'm very glad he didn't. It's an excellent film that is undoubtedly one of the best of 2016. There's a quiet detachment to Jenkins' work, similar to McQueen's take on similarly weighty work in 12 Years A Slave or Lonergan's in Manchester. And while it didn't hit me exactly where I wanted it to, the control of tone marks Jenkins out as a stronger filmmaker than someone who would have gone for the melodrama.
A superb movie that, like Silence, I think will only grow on me with distance when I evaluate it retrospectively; with that film too I was surprised by how restrained it was and how little emotion it extrapolated from me, but given time I now think it's Scorsese's best since The Departed and before that Goodfellas.
Give me a day or two and I reckon I'll feel very similar about Moonlight. Would very happily watch it again.
edit: there was one bum note which unfortunately half the film rests on for me; didn't completely buy Kevin kissing Chiron and how that scenario played out and his bully making Kevin fight him as if he knew what happened. A little bit contrived compared to how naturalistic the rest of the film is.

A week after entering negotiations to direct The Batman, Matt Reeves has exited the talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. This movie is never getting made.

just wait a decade and reboot the whole thing, but this time ont let Zack Snyder rule everything
Too much money on the table to not shit out another Batman film in the next 18-24 months. Quality means nothing to these people (producers or moviegoers). Someone will submit a script; they'll throw it together; throw more money at Affleck if they have to and the cycle will start all over again.
Finally watched Doctor Strange.
wow.
What a wasted chance. It felt rushed and soulless (heh) just to be able to link it with the other movies ASAP. Think it could have been a great film, even if they had to make two to tell the whole story and link it to the other films of Marvel.
I really wanted to like it, but was a great disappointment. Think Marvel films are becoming shittier and shittier.
Also, humour was so forced in this one. The movie clearly had a different tone, don't push that shit in every fucking character/franchise

I thought base formula was no different to ant man ironman and co in terms of origin story but was visual spectacle.
