A Ghost Story
Gorgeous movie. Makes such effective use of every technical trick in the book: space, depth and blocking are all so wonderfully used to continually frame the ghost as alien and distant; the editing is nigh-on perfect (the scene with Mara listening to music had me on the verge of tears) and it's such a beautiful way of capturing the immeasurable shades to grief - and even more uniquely, does it from the perspective of the dead. The ghost itself is a masterwork; at once familiar and different, comedic and spooky, human and otherwise.
The final 10/15 minutes is a little tricky; Lowery seems to want to have his cake and eat it, turning something personal into something bigger and more meaningful and metaphysical, and it loses some of its intimacy when the ghost starts travelling backwards through time. And while the film very much refutes the monologue of pretentious dungarees douchebag, it doesn't make it any less painful to listen to… but overall it's an incredible experience. I haven't seen Pete's Dragon yet but I thought Ain't There Bodies Saints was severely underrated, and this will be one of those forgotten gems too in 10 years time.
