Absolutely not

If they can build a good library of games that work well on the small screen and get the price to £150 or so, I'll probably eventually get one.

Honestly find its position far more interesting as a 3DS successor than the WiiU successor. It can't do any worse than the latter, and even if it turns out to be a pile of shite as a console, it could well be carried by people buying it for the portable capabilities.

Would like to give BotW a go as Zelda seems like it should be right up my alley, but was disappointingly unimpressed by ALBW which is the only one I've played. Not sure if I just don't like the format as much as I thought I would, or if it's that game in particular. Main reason I bought the 3DS tbh, but got plenty of use out of it elsewhere. If I can get a good Pokemon and Monster Hunter game that I can also hook up to the TV when I wanna give it my full attention, my interest will skyrocket. Those releases are obviously a matter of time, so the case is also true of me getting a Switch in all likelihood.

This is true, but its only worked to their advantage in the console space once in that timeframe

I'm not sure about the specs, but N64 games look better than PS1. It lost that fight handily.
Gamecube looked better than PS2 and Xbox. It didn't even compete.
Wii looked nowhere near as good as PS3 despite first parties squeezing some magic out. It was a juggernaut.
WiiU caught up with the gen that was coming to a close, and was very quickly rendered underpowered. Gargantuan failure.
And Switch seems to be halfway between a WiiU and a PS4. Who's to say whether they'll be proved right or not.

The last 3 including Switch have had some gimmick to hook people in place of specs, but it backfired to some extent at least with the WiiU. In fairness though, the Switch's hook seems to have much more real life use than the WiiU's, so should get much more traction.

Nintendo really screwed the pooch on another console. They are combining both worlds (home console & handheld) while making both a completely neutered experience (battery life for handheld and graphics at home plus). Which then drove up the price for the console. I paid $225 for a Xbox One S that includes a 4k Blu Ray player. Some might not care about 4k Blu Ray. But I do. What I don't care about is a handheld. If they would have made this way more powerful, same price, no handheld, I'm sold. Same power, no handheld, and $199. Sold. But this? With the minimal amount of games? Nah. Haven't bought a Nintendo console since the GameCube. Quit the gimmicks and I'll buy again.

E: I lied. I bought a Wii. Mario Galaxy was GOAT tier. Eventually became disgusted with the system and sold it.
