Yeah, they're fucked.
By DY_nasty Go To PostThe Dreamcast died.
For what
It's not dead. It's thinking.
By DY_nasty Go To PostPeople stood in line when the Galaxy blew up too.
But not when the Xbox One launched.
It's going to sell well for twelve months. At least through Mario and then whenever Monster Hunter and Pokémon come out . But it's going to have a ceiling too and that ceiling is probably somewhere in the 20-30 million units range. That's when everyone who wants one will already own it and the sales will fall off.
With 60+ million 3DS's out there, there's going to have to be a come to Jesus moment within the first two years where they make the decision to divert all those resources towards either the Switch, or to whatever the real successor is for their handheld division. That's their bread and butter where they roam uncontested and have solid deep roots. The Switch is very clearly (to me personally) not a 3DS replacement.

I kinda expect them to develop a new SKU down the line that takes on the handheld aspects of the Switch. Smaller screen, bigger battery, no detachable controller units and a Pascal based chip instead of Maxwell for better power efficiency. Basically a PSP/Vita.
Even though Sony is out in the wilderness in this arena, they are not uncontested. They are fighting (and some would say losing) against Apple. I never see any kids with a 3DS but I regularly see them with an iDevice. F2P shovel-ware is winning unfortunately.

By Retro Go To PostThis thing is definitely not replacing their handheld lineSame thing was said about the DS and Gameboy (RIP)

But doubt they will pass on the chance to sell plastic bits for 20+ dollars
On whether you lose access to each month’s game ends the month ends with Switch’s paid online service…
Reggie Fils-Aime: Correct. It means that essentially you’ve got access to that game for a period of time, and then after the month there’s a new selection. You’ll have the opportunity to buy it, but [after] that month we’ve moved on to another game.
I think it would be helpful maybe to step back. Because I think it’s important there’s an understanding of the bigger vision. The bigger vision is that we are going to provide an overall online service, subscription-based, that not only will capture the multiplayer opportunity, but also the voice chat capability that we’re going to provide through a global app. We think that that’s just as important as access to Virtual Console content.
The reason for that is, it continues to reinforce our commitment to online, and do so in a way that will enable the consumer to enjoy their Nintendo Switch and to still be able to play those connected experiences—like Splatoon, like Kart, like fill in the blank—while they’re on the go. Instead of having some sort of bulky gamer headset, you’ll be able to do it right off your smartphone, put in your earbuds that you use for your standard mobile device. We think that’s a pretty sweet solution. That’s part of the overall opportunity that we see in a subscription service.
By KingGondo Go To PostWhy don't they just create their own version of PS Now? I would pay for it.Why would they do that when they can just charge between 5$-15$ for Nes and SNes roms and people will eat it up?
By LFMartins86 Go To PostWhy would they do that when they can just charge between 5$-15$ for Nes and SNes roms and people will eat it up?If the Switch was marketed as a the exclusive home of a Nintendo streaming service I'm willing to bet they'd sell a lot more consoles and subs for that service than they would $5 copies of SMB.
By KingGondo Go To PostIf the Switch was marketed as a the exclusive home of a Nintendo streaming service I'm willing to bet they'd sell a lot more consoles and subs for that service than they would $5 copies of SMB.They are making shit tons of money with the NES Classic. They will probably release a SNes Classic before they think about something like that.
They also don't have the network know how and infrastructure to pull something like that.
I like it, i wanna try it out and research more but that level of quality in mobile form sounds awesome

I can't see how that's a positive showcase for new hardware carrying a premium price tag.
That was put out by their marketing department. That isn't something IGN threw together for comparisons sake. Nintendo--to their credit--is being honest and saying, this is where we're at, please give us $400+ for this.
I can't help but be negative because it's all just so disappointing. The VC is going to have to be some other worldly shit to make up any ground for me. But I feel like that's something they would have mentioned, instead of taking interviews and saying "stay tuned".

I don't understand why you keep referencing Xbox one.

This does not help the case of spending $400 on a Switch
By Xpike Go To PostReggie's PR speak sure must be legendary by now, can't believe a man can spew so much bullAll it seems to take is some memes and being associated with Nintendo to get a pass on this. Imagine if Pitchford had some memes.
By LFMartins86 Go To PostInstead of having some sort of bulky gamer headset, you’ll be able to do it right off your smartphone, put in your earbuds that you use for your standard mobile device.I guess that confirms all social online stuff will be done via app... which seems completely crazy to me. I wonder what sort of sucker will pay for their online service.
By data Go To PostAll it seems to take is some memes and being associated with Nintendo to get a pass on this. Imagine if Pitchford had some memes.they said on stream that these coins are earned in game, and used either to continue playing after dying, or on cosmetics. no info on microtransactions.

Wii U might even be closer to the Switch version considering the Wii U video is from 6 months ago.
Skyrim apparently is based on the Special Edition, not vanilla:

By Moris Go To PostFurther I get from the conference the more I dislike this console.Yeah, I'm lukewarm as well. Went from a definite launch purchase to an "I'll buy Zelda for Wii U and buy a Switch as Mario approaches."
By money_woes Go To Postwhats the consensus on this? worth the price?Like all consoles, impossible to tell right now, almost certainly not at release. Especially if you have a WiiU.
By money_woes Go To Postwhats the consensus on this? worth the price?Maybe read over the last five pages and see for yourself.
Switch colours look quite better. Colours on the Wii U, especially on that Gamepad, were always so washed out.
Wait for actual experiences, maybe.
