On what planet is Falcom one of the bigger devs in japan?
Also that's a screenshot of a PS3 game from 2013
They're going to choose PS4 if they haven't already chosen it. (Falcom has.)
Switch will get alot of hand me downs like the Dragon Quest ports, but that's it.

By livefromkyoto Go To PostI say right now because pretty soon every developer in Japan is going to have to decide whether they go mobile, PS4 or Switch. A lot of them won't want to develop for mobile and throw their game into the app store pit.

LFK, you're not convincing me with any of these arguments, if anything I feel like you're proving my point lol
I don't understand why people argue about 3rd parties on Nintendo platforms.
The reason 3rd Parties don't support them is because users have never really bought and supported 3rd party games on the platforms even when they're there.
People don't buy Nintendo platforms to play 3rd parties. They buy them to play the most valuable 1st party IPs in gaming. Lack of 3rd party support has been and will always be a non-issue for Nintendo platforms.

In taking into account the total number of developers in the country? It's not really debatable, is it? There are so many tiny outfits doing visual novels & shitty moe rpgs.

You're right, you'll have to excuse me because aside from resolution the actual thing is barely distinguishable from a PS3 game:
They're going to choose PS4 if they haven't already chosen it. (Falcom has.)
There's nothing weird about that, AFAIK Falcom have never directly released a game on a Nintendo platform in their history. But there are obviously a mountain of developers doing 3DS stuff who have working relationships with Nintendo. I think it's going to come down to whether Japan accepts the Switch as a portable or not.
By Retro Go To PostI don't understand why people argue about 3rd parties on Nintendo platforms. It was never a problem on their handhelds, NES, SNES, Gamecube, N64 (allthough the PS1 had a better support).

It was only somewhat bad with the Wii due the focus on motion controls and hardware that was nowhere close to the competition.
WiiU came late and Nintendo failed to negotiate proper support.
They had some old ass ports from EA,WB and Ubisoft. All those upcoming releases at the time, like Bioshock,Tomb Raider, GTA and others did never appear on the platform.
Old ass ports aren't interesting, and it's hard to get into the market and even build up momentum, when the competition is already miles ahead.

Nintendo does a piss poor job courting third parties while at the same time releasing platforms that third parties don't wanna work on because the hardware is shit.

The exception does not disprove the rule.
RE4 was one of 4 games Capcom released out of a deal with Nintendo to boost hardware sales. In the end only RE4 was even remotely successful and even then it ultimately had little impact on hardware sales.
By Pennywise Go To PostWhich are also coming to PS4/Steam.

This is true. But there's also a ton of candy-coloured kids' stuff clogging up Japanese shelves that just isn't going to find its niche there. And those PC releases are either afterthoughts primarily for the international market, or produced by devs without the budget for a console license. PC gaming is just not a thing in Japan to the degree where anyone's really looking to make bank off it. Japan is still very much portable/mobile land, and that portable niche is about to belong to the Switch alone unless it flops.
The voice chat app thing seems like it would have been a nice work around if the online was still free...
By Retro Go To PostThe exception does not disprove the rule.To call it a "non-issue" is silly. It IS an issue, and should be a priority for Nintendo but here we are again and they're fighting for five year old scraps at best. Why?

I think it's their misguided attempt to keep child molesters away from kids on their console. No 6-year old is going to be on a cell phone.
Man as someone who was actually pretty excited about this thing after that first video. After last night and then the stuff that has come out today I have lost almost all interest in this thing for the time being. I'll reevaluate it next year when Mario and Xenoblade are (hopefully) out.

This is such a disingenuous argument it's unreal. Lmao
I can name 20, maybe 30 Japanese developers larger than Falcom. The top 10 of which I believe are competitive globally and have international relevance.
Like as a Falcom fanboy I'm pleased that someone who knows very little about them would consider them big or representative of Japanese game development in any capacity, even if it's solely to support an argument about how bad it is currently.....but they're really not.
There's nothing weird about that, AFAIK Falcom have never directly released a game on a Nintendo platform in their history.
Falcom was a PC exclusive dev until 2006, when they switched to PSP due to declining sales and losing their distribution partner for PC games.
They've never released a game on a Nintendo platform directly in their history because in their history they've always focused on one platform exclusively. lol They've gone from PC to PSP to Vita to now PS4.
They've never done a lot of things. They had never worked with 3D models until the screenshot of that game you posted. They have also never released a game internationally. Everything they do besides developing their one game for one platform is done through licensing their properties to other developers/publishers. They're a company only large enough to operate domestically on one platform at a time.
So it's just weird as hell to me that you're singling them out to prove whatever point you're trying to make. It doesn't help your argument at all to attack a developer you know nothing about to try and illustrate this sad state of japanese game development.

I'm curious how much it will be accepted due the size/battery life, plus the vita and 3DS are still getting plenty of games. Just look at all the simultaenous releases with Vita/3DS along with a console release, or even a PS3 releases.
Fucking complicated situation all around.

I just don't know what people want or expect when they ask for "3rd party support"
It just seems like such a nebulous complaint. I mean they have stuff now that people actually interested in the platform seem pretty excited about. but here we are having the same arguments about 3rd parties people had for the wii and wii-u.
It just comes off to me as people being mad that a platform exists that doesn't really cater or appeal to them and then proceeding to frame it as an objective problem that needs to be addressed. If they don't address it it will lead to Nintendo exiting the console game.
10 years later Nintendo still here. Still selling consoles people want to buy and making games people want to play. Which is why I think it's just absolutely a non-issue.

Wow, slow down there cowboy, lol.
Falcom's current market cap is $67 million USD
This is not some struggling small-time developer, that's a significant corporation. So yes, they're objectively one of the larger developers in the country.
So it's just weird as hell to me that you're singling them out to prove whatever point you're trying to make. It doesn't help your argument at all to attack a developer you know nothing about to try and illustrate this sad state of japanese game development.
If you're reading it as an attack you're misunderstanding me. I'm saying that there are like 6 active console publishers in the country with the resources to produce high quality PS4 visuals, and hundreds without. This really isn't a controversial opinion.
People go on about third parties because they don't want to buy a console for 2 games a year, regardless of the quality of those 2 games. Simple as that. It hamstrings them, undoubtedly.
They'll persevere like they always do, but that doesn't mean its not an issue. Its leaving millions of potential buyers on the table, if you'll forgive the messy half-metaphor. Whether its balanced out by the fact that they sell each console at a profit from the beginning is up to the eggheads to decide. But a £280 machine 3 years into the gen, not powerful enough to get half-decent ports? That's fucked up.

Nobody is "mad that the platform exists" (wtf kind of argument is that?), but people are legitimately wondering why the platform is narrowly focused and unwilling to open itself up to better opportunities. Don't put out something like this and then have the guts to tell me it'll cost $299. You have to do better than that. Sony had to go through this with the PS3 and they learned from their mistakes. Nintendo just wants to do what Nintendo wants to do, which seemingly noone quite knows what that is.
And what kind of third-party support do we want? Here's a reasonable request: why aren't Tales of games on Nintendo platforms? Or how about a new Street Fighter? Or a Persona? Do those not fit within Nintendo's world? Start there.

By diehard Go To Postpeople wanted to buy the Wii U?I always kinda wanted one but didnt think it was worth the price. Over here, a year after wiiu release, one of the local retailers just went and decided they didn't want nintendo stuff anymore. All games for $10 to $20 etc
So i bought a wiiu there for $150 nz(around $100 US)
What a time that was. I wouldn't have got it otherwise though.
Does anyone know the difference between the wiiu and switch versions of the new zelda game?

Tales of Berseria
It's not unreasonable to ask for those games on the Switch. Capcom is even releasing SFV on Linux.

Pre-ordered a Switch. Pretty content about it.
Don’t like the “ecosystem” prices though, namely controllers and games.
Fix that shit Nintendo.
About the console itself, what annoys me is that apparently it only charges from the bottom, which would stop it from being charged while using the kickstand. FFS, Iwata goes and of course something like this happens.

Sony seems to have financed a bit of Street Fighter or at least is heavily involved.
They don't care about PC related stuff, but I doubt they're gonna let them release it on another platform.
Persona is also a bit tricky due the ties and general things that happen between Atlus and Sony.
However, they're getting SMT over.
Tales of was already announced, but we don't know whenever it's Berseria or an old port.
There are more than enough games, both japanese and US/EU based that could easily get ported.
Hell, even Nintendo and their most loyal partner during the WiiU days is keeping releases from the platform with Ubisoft.

All games that are releasing soon and not a single sign of them on the Switch.
