This mother fucking shit enrages me. This is some straight up BULL SHIT. Chelsea Manning stole thousands of classified documents, gave them to what we now know is either an arm of a foreign intelligence agency or at least compromised by one, WHILE IN UNIFORM. She belongs in jail.
Fuck Obama
Fuck Obama
Stealing state secrets and then handing them over to a foreign entity while serving and just being forgiven for it is not the "right thing".
I am beginning to wonder if Obama is doing this as a big FUCK YOU to the military and the intelligence communities on his way out of the door.
I would say I would be glad to see him go if something WORSE wasn't waiting to replace him on Friday.
Massive disrespect to our armed services, that's for sure. Traitors and deserters getting pats on the back for a job well done.

I mean that's what they are. Literally traitors - not the "oh those danged republicans *rabble* *rabble*". She aided the enemy, Bergdahl got soldiers killed.

By Enron Go To PostMassive disrespect to our armed services, that's for sure. Traitors and deserters getting pats on the back for a job well done.what a load of bullshit. Deserting should be an option, we are humans with rights not slaves.
Her commutation probably had more to do with the fact that she's a transsexual in solitary confinement receiving no treatment for her medical condition.
By DY_nasty Go To PostThat's bullshti lol
that is such fucking bullshit
Civilians will never understand
I think now we are getting a glimpse of the contempt that Obama harbors for our Armed Forces that he couldn't let out while functioning as commander-in-chief.
He makes me sick.

By Elchele Go To Postwhat a load of bullshit. Deserting should be an option, we are humans with rights not slaves. The only way this makes any sense is in an involuntary draft, and for that there's a thing called conscientious objection.
No excuse for desertion if you volunteer of your own free will.

He's just commenting on one aspect of Enron's hyperbolic anger.

Disagree with this. You might not know what you're getting yourself into until it's too late. That being said, DY is right. No need to turn over sensitive info to other nations. Main reason I think Snowden is a giant fuck that never deserves a pardon.

One of you want to explain? I'm kind of curious.
I know nothing of this situation but it's kind of hilarious some people are applauding this (mainly on gaf). Really seems like anything Dems/Obama does is great.
By Elchele Go To Postpeople can change their minds. and we do all the time.I don't see how the military could function if desertion was allowed.
American soldiers deserting en masse is probably a wet dream of Eichele's, based on the comments he's made about what he thinks of America in the past.
By KingGondo Go To PostI don't see how the military could function if desertion was allowed.hint: it shouldn't.
By Enron Go To PostAmerican soldiers deserting en masse is probably a wet dream of Eichele's, based on the comments he's made about what he thinks of America in the past.I don't have a specially hate against american army. The whole idea of an army, in any country, is absolute stupidity and one of the worst examples of loss of humanity on my view. Not to mention how is basically a trap in most countries, and specially in USA where it's basically the #1 option if you don't have money for university or a good job.
By KingGondo Go To PostI don't see how the military could function if desertion was allowed.
It doesn't need to be allowed and should be punished, but there's shades of gray and turning sensitive info over to other nations is a whole other level.

We can debate whether the punishment was proportional to the crime.
By Elchele Go To Postpeople can change their minds. and we do all the time.then desert. more times than not, deserters aren't hit anything close to the full letter of the law. in the past decade you could damn near ask to quit in writing and unless you're in an active combat post (like... a VERY small part of the military) you'll be transitioned out like clockwork within months or even weeks.
you don't aid the enemy. that's kind of a dick move brehs
i've seen multiple people 'desert' ie go AWOL ie leave ie go home. its not a big deal. work goes on. if they want their benefits, they'll usually come back and do some paperwork meaning they won't have a dishonorable discharge following them around. what you're describing is not uncommon or unfamiliar to the military. especially a volunteer military that's endured a host of problems over the past 20 years which stemmed from trying to keep people in (both of these people are far, far removed from that time too)
you don't aid the enemy. what they did.
By Fenderputty Go To PostSure but like … we live in reality. And military exists, yes. But it blows my mind that you basically lose your human rights and free will if you happen to join the army. You should be able to get out if you no longer feel identified with it.
In my civilian opinion, desertion is fine. Don't expect to return back to your home country, but bye. If a large portion of the military deserts, then it's probably a good indicator that some shit is majorly wrong with the military, current objectives, or something else back home.
What's not fine is selling out your former teammates/co-workers (I have no idea what word would be best to use here), leading to their unnecessary deaths. That shit should get you put on a wanted list from your home country.

See DY's post.
By KingGondo Go To PostIt is. That said, she's been punished.

That's the point of the commutation I guess. She's still guilty of her crimes but the sentence was reduced to reflect what Obama thinks is reasonable. I personally feel the sentence was probably OK and should stick, but solitary confinement and no treatment for gender dysphoria is rather cruel and unusual.
"My actions shouldn't have consequences"I'm not trying to justify what Manning did, although I do believe his trial was a pure farce and far away from being a fair trial. Beyond that, he already served a lot of time and clearly is destroying his mental health to be there.
What Snowden did, I can't disagree with. He sacrificed his life to let the world know what was really happening.
If you're referring to desertion, then I don't think it should have a consequence. It should be treated has any other job. If you no longer feel comfortable at it, you should be able to leave at any time. Otherwise, you risk scenarios like Bergdahl
By Elchele Go To PostAnd military exists, yes. But it blows my mind that you basically lose your human rights and free will if you happen to join the army. You should be able to get out if you no longer feel identified with it.
You make a choice when you enlist. You're not forced into anything. A lot of people hate the military, finish their time and GTFO. It's not fucking hard. Also, you can ask them to let you go. In my unit we had three people get out for being conscientious objectors and other moral reasons.
Snowden could have been a true hero for the people but chose to destroy that by selling info to China and Russia. Fuck Snowden.
By Fenderputty Go To PostSnowden could have been a true hero for the people but chose to destroy that by selling info to China and Russia. Fuck Snowden.[citation needed]
USA basically forced him to deal with Russia by removing his passport. He was coming to South America
Could've built her a new jail. Moved her to an existing accommodating facility. She had 30 years to go - and that was getting off light.
there's a ton of options between 'look for better avenues internally' and 'run to russia and china'
whew
im glad i learned how to laugh at fukkery. i haven't stopped since i read that headline.

how in the hell do you think Snowden was able to get away from China and stay in Russia all this time? He's traded info for passage. Do you really think that both of those countries' intelligence services weren't all over him from the moment he touched down with all that info access he was carrying?
It amazes me whenever I find someone who thinks Snowden HASN'T given secrets to the Russians.
Even if he hasn't, the stuff that he has leaked publically has caused severe damage to the intelligence gathering capabilities of the United States.
Manning deserves jailtime. Snowden deserves a bullet.

So he chose self preservation over anything else in the end. Any harm, including massive jail time, that befell him would have made him a martyr for the cause. He didn't do that though, and then sold info for his asylum. Fuck him.
Also ... I'm curious if Enron was this upset when Bush pardoned Scooter Libby. I'm guessing no.

He would have been an idiot to face trial in USA, like it would have been fair lol. Should have let him go where he wanted to.
Obviously he had to trade info for a residence in Russia, that's quite obvious. But that wasn't his initial plan. That was in huge part thanks to the american government and shit decisions.

Like I said .. he chose self preservation in the end. Not very noble. He could have gone to prison, become the martyr for the cause and hoped for an eventual pardon. He didn't and the info he sold ensure he never will get that pardon. Again ... Fuck snowden. Only the super left think what he did was reasonable. I was initially on his side too.
7 years in custody and a whole bunch of time in solitary is a rough time
What type of sentence she deserved is a matter of perspective. I don't claim to know what the right punishment is, but I think Obama chose the humane option here.
Either way, he's not going to pardon Snowden. Y'all can calm down.
