By Perfect Blue Go To PostThis thing is toast in the Senate, so whatever.I mean, a day ago, some of y'all didn't even think it would pass the House. Do not give Republicans more credit than they deserve (which is none). They vote for party over country every single time. People were furious at town halls over the AHCA and representatives shrugged and said it was paid protestors and passed it anyway.
This can absolutely pass the senate.
The senate is a bit trickier due to procedural rules. One of them being that they can't vote on it until they see a CBO score and then they have to send it back to the House after they make a bunch of changes to it to get passed. The House is a simple YES/NO vote, the Senate, is not, by design.

Uhhh
Yeah, they voted on that amendment right before voting on the ACHA.

This specific bill as written will not pass the Senate. That is a guarantee. It is going to get ripped up by the CBO.
Will the Senate pass this bill in some other form? Possibly.

I, wait, what? lmao
By DY_nasty Go To PostI thought we'd all have learned by now. "This will never happen because"
It still hasn't happened. Passing the house because leadership decided moderates matter less than getting primaried isn't "happening".
I guess it could pass, but if it did, it's going to be a different version of what we're seeing or it's going to come at the expense of a rule change that will never go back. Either way the damage has been done to moderate house R's.
By DY_nasty Go To PostI thought we'd all have learned by now. "This will never happen because"I'm fucking saying. People need to stop making bold proclamations about how this won't pass the senate. Y'all said it wouldn't pass the House. You said Trump wouldn't beat Hillary. This is all really happening.
Also, please stop playing politics as a game and realize that real people are going to be hurt very badly by this and the Democrats "winning points" doesn't mean anything and it's going to be a long while before we can muster up something like the ACA again. People are going to die.

I don't think polling inaccuracies during an election is the same as predicting legislative outcomes in even the most remote sense, but sure.
The decision for the GOP always was: "How do we protect moderate R's while still repealing". The house decided to not protect moderate R's instead of never voting to repeal. I'm not surprised even though I didn't think this was the route they would take. The same question now faces the Senate. They also have to deal with senate rules and a CBO score the house opted to not wait for. There's a lot more room for this to fail that for it to succeed.
I don't think anyone who's happy about any tactical advantages Dem's gain from this are actually happy people are going to suffer. The two aren't one in the same and tactical advantages need to be exploited so we can undo whatever damage is coming. Fast.

This is hilariously inaccurate. This is the THIRD TIME THEY'VE TRIED TO PASS THIS. There's a reason this bill is so unpopular and it isn't because of it's lack of press. They literally have NO power to stop the GOP from passing a bill the fucking AARP is against.
EDIT: in fact the dems just threatened shutdown last week if the GOP tried to force a vote to keep government open. They did this loudly and publicly too.

Assuming Trump and republicans will fail at legislation hasn't exactly been a bad bet for the last few months.

It's cocky ... for sure. It's not out of touch though. The GOP is making it easier and easier for us to undo whatever damage they can inflict. Passing this bill will be terrible if they can do it. It's also probably the only outcome in which medicare for all is likely in 2020 so Psy can finally go to the Doctor.
Am I happy that's what it took? No ... I didn't vote for accelerationism. I'm just living through it.
By DY_nasty Go To PostOh. And we'll get em next time!Think of the attack ads they can run on next year, though.

By KingGondo Go To PostIf they ran on something other than "we're better than Republicans" that might help.
They do. Mostly jobs for the middle class and healthcare expansion. But that shit doesn't excite the base apparently, despite what the Bernie bros tell us.
By KingGondo Go To PostIf they ran on something other than "we're better than Republicans" that might help. They need messaging that says what the party will do for you, what they represent and that's the biggest thing facing Tom Perez. He can't just run candidates out there on the platform of "I'm not racist/sexist/Trump/whatever" because it obviously didn't work.
You can't count on people to vote Democrat in the midterms just because their Republican incumbent voted for the AHCA.
By rodeoclown Go To PostYou can't count on people to vote Democrat in the midterms just because their Republican incumbent voted for the AHCA.
This wasn't an explanation of 2006. It's a slight goal post shift in the right direction though. We already have evidence that the base is fired up from Trump and the AHCA. We've narrowly lost two +20R special elections we have no business even getting close in.
Literally taking today's results and fighting for the house is the only recourse we have.
By Fenderputty Go To PostPlease explain 2006. I'll wait.Is that a typo? Or are you actually pointing 10 years ago lol
By DY_nasty Go To PostIs that a typo? Or are you actually pointing 10 years ago lol
Maybe I read "Dems "NEVER VOTE IN MIDTERMS" incorrectly.
No ... that can't be it.
It also can't be that 2006 is the last time in which we were the minority party and had a motivated base and a POTUS universally hated. Surely there's no parallels to draw from this.
We should probably only look back to the last midterm in 2010 and 2014 after the first black pres won and dem enthusiasm was down while GOP enthusiasm was way up. That's probably the best thing to do.
By DY_nasty Go To PostThis is what I mean by out of touch broWhat is the point of this discussion? What exactly do you want the Democratic Party to do at this very moment? All things considered they're doing as much as they can as the minority party.

By Kibner Go To PostThey are doing a shit job at raising support for their initiatives among voters in ways other than laughing and pointing at the GOP.What would you have them do? They've stonewalled Donnie and remained united against him since even before the election and IMO right now letting the GOP and Trump dig their own hole is probably the right strategy for the long term. Because they sure as hell aren't going to be able to pass any legislation this is about all they can do. On a micro level the party has helped fund Congressional races like the one in Georgia that the Democrat overachieved in and almost won. Once the mid-terms roll around I'm sure you'll see the party ramp up fundraising and grass roots-level campaigning for a massive push to win back seats.
By DY_nasty Go To PostIs that a typo? Or are you actually pointing 10 years ago lol
It's very recent history, and most closely matches the context we're currently in. Nothing is a given obviously, but the pattern has held for decades.
By Kibner Go To PostThey are doing a shit job at raising support for their initiatives among voters in ways other than laughing and pointing at the GOP.
There's a medicare for all bill and it has some cosponsors. https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/676/cosponsors
Maybe some of this useless vitrol currently seen in the left would be better served calling representatives who haven't cosponsored instead of complaining about initiatives that will never pass and blaming Dems for legislation they have no control over.
Like ... they literally threatened government shutdown over an AHCA vote last week and the bill has been dragged so much by the media since it's inception that it has a lower rating than congress.
This is amazing. "Wolf ... listen man. I got my vote in for a repeal. That's all I cared about. The senate can deal with the shit sandwich we knowingly sent them"

Either way, "they don't have any other options", singing about shit they hope will never happen, being #betterbycomparison, and pointing fingers when blame comes through is not inspiring, galvanizing, or even comforting.
Its the same stuff over and over from the left. Who are they really trying to impress by targeting Obama's pension? Shit like that is flat out dumb.

What do the Dems stand for?
By Kibner Go To PostYeah.
e: basically, everyone is awful, to varying degrees
So?
Republicans are trying to rally around this after they fucked their constituents. So are we as a country dumb enough to fall for "Yeah we fucked you..... but are you tired of those smug liberals saving your life?" Cause that is literally what Fox News is pumping out there. The dems reacted badly but its true...... They should be able to slaughter moderate republicans with this.
