Not surprised by the Obama speeches. He has been telling us who he is for the past 10 years. Thinking he is going to change because he is no longer President is silly.
Zuckerberg should run for Mayor of Palo Alto or something. If he runs for President he will fail miserably.

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostI'm trying to understand what your point is.
That the demonetization of wall street and money hasn't helped, won't help and isn't something we as a party should be striving for. When the left wing of the party starts ignoring the left wing economists because they would rather shout lame platitudes we are in trouble. "Obama is their boi", "Hillary is a shill" aren't meaningful. Obama not being a staunch anti wall street guy didn't prevent didn't prevent Dodd Frank nor did it stop him from being a decent pres. So why does it matter?
Policy matters. Ability to affect policy through skill and experience negotiating matters.
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostI'm trying to understand what your point is.I never got it either
There's a qualifier that never got communicated.
By DY_nasty Go To PostPolicy isn't everything.
That's pretty much how we got in this mess.
"ability to affect policy through skill and negotiation" was an important part of my comment lol.
I'm a pragmatist. I realize incremental change is important. Look what the stupid purity tests got the GOP. They're in full control and can't get anything done. They should be fucking up medicaid and giving handouts the rich like they always do but they can't. Could you imagine scenario in which Dems take control of government again, we craft legislation reworking some of Obamacare (lets say negotiation of drugs, higher taxes on the rich, expanded medicaid, a harsher penalty for not getting insurance and expanded subsidies for the poor.) Now imagine a left wing tea party who won't vote for this in reconciliation because it's not full blown universal healthcare.
We're demonizing big business when they played a critical role in shaping NC policy. Look at the stuff phaze listed as positives for Zuk. They're not really positives. At lest they shouldn't be.
Like ... I can't counts how many times I've seen someone seriously mention Kander as an option for our 2020 run because he's an outsider and is charismatic. He's a currently unemployed ex state legislator with no experience at the federal level, but wooooow boy can he sure assemble that assault rifle quickly.
It's seriously depressing.
Negotiating with your insane base is easier than dealing with flat opposition from across the isle too.
I still don't get your insistence against a left grass roots effort (that isn't occupy Wall Street or BLM)
I still don't get your insistence against a left grass roots effort (that isn't occupy Wall Street or BLM)
The idea that you can't appear too chummy with big business is really silly. Rather, you have to think about what you should hold big business accountable for while still maintaining working relationships with them.
And on a personal note, he went to Columbia then Harvard Law. You really can't ask him to have new friends.

If negotiation within your base was easier, why then aren't we facing medicaid cuts, a ballooning deficit and handouts to the rich for 10 years? The reason is because the right is unwilling to negotiate with the left and the extreme ends of their party are unwilling to negotiate with their moderates.
I thought I explained myself quite clearly with the UHC example as well.
Politics is a cycle and at the end of each conservative fuck up we shift further left as a response. Then we forget why we did this and fuck up again to start the cycle over. Our system is not built for overnight massive change. If a left wing group in congress prevented meaningful legislation because it wasn't liberal enough I would give up on politics altogether and just let shit come at me as it does and hope for the best.

By KingGondo Go To PostI dunno man. It would be cool if the Dems could get their shit together (they won't) and develop a spine and aggressively lobby for progressive causes instead of being the "reasonable alternative" to the lunacy of the Republicans. Build up some excitement from the grassroots and you'd see a lot more people running for lower offices with some political potential. That's how you built up a strong bench for the future.
People weren't excited to vote for Hillary, and they wouldn't be excited to vote for Mark Zuckerberg.
I also don't think he can distance himself enough from the obscene farce that is Silicon Valley for me to ever want to vote for him.
I think I say this at least once a week.
Also, your average American *hates* what Silicon Valley represents. It may as well be the real life version of The Matrix. In fact, that post by Zukerberg more or less is his personal epiphany of what a middle class existence looks like.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/are-twitter-users-tuning-out-president-donald-trump/
At the beginning of the administration, an average tweet from the president generated roughly 206,000 engagements. Now, his average tweet generates only about 71,000 engagements β a drop of 66 percent during Mr. Trump's first 100 days.
Engagement with the president's tweets began steadily dropping about three weeks into his presidency. Since then, engagement has been on a slow but steady decline, even as the president's total number of followers has increased by roughly 40 percent.

It's a moronic sentiment, not to mention a straw man.
Nobody except the most bitter of right wing pundits had a problem with him getting a huge book deal.
Taking exorbitant speaking fees from the institutions that nearly brought on a second Great Depression after leaving office is a sign of his coziness and complicity with the banks.
It is disgusting and a signal of just how entangled our government has become with the most ruthless and bloodthirsty segment of our economy.
The only thing Wall Street banks should want to give a good politician when he gets out of office is a flaming bag of dog shit on their doorstep.

He was an excellent President though....... Why can't he get money? If anything he deserves a fat pay day for all the good work he did dragging us out of the recession and killing Osama
$400k for a speech? Must be one hell of a speech but shit, if someone is willing to pay it you might as well take their money.
People are angrier over Obama taking $400k for a speech at Wall Street than the same people were at Bernie for completely ignoring minorities while he campaigned, but whatever.
I don't care about the money, I just hate that he and his wife are black, you know? Like, if they could just change that aspect of the situation I would probably not even notice that this was an event that happend during my lifetime.

Maybe being angry at both is the right call.
Surely it isn't too much to ask for the representatives of the left to be woke while simultaneously not being beholden to Wall Street.

Who gets into politics to help people? I mean truly help people? I worked in foreign humanitarian aid for eight years and the people in this country aren't worth it. If politicians didn't know that going in, they realize it once they travel and talk to the people that make up this country. It's a thankless job at the top. Get in, get out, get paid.
Obama literally will never hold public office again. He's reached the highest office of the land you can.
Still totally fair to criticize him. You think he would be getting $400k speech fees if he had (justifiably) thrown a bunch of bankers into federal prison?

Most these guys are Ivy educated. If they are looking to make money there are easier ways of doing it.
You don't take 400k from bankers and then rail on them for being greedy.
You go and pat them on the back.

shit even if you suck at that part you can go on as a 'lobbyist liaison', entertainer, or facilitate the next guy behind you and keep snorting lines off of strippers on the gov's dime
Are we expecting Obama to become a Goldman Sachs lobbyist and claim that the Great Recession was a hoax or something?
By reilo Go To PostApparently you can't be altruistic if you make money. Someone tell Warren Buffett and Paul Allen.

They've got money coming in from other places. I mean, these are mostly intelligent people that you would think had aspirations at some point. But a lot of Congress are just taking naps after their 3 star lunch.
A lot of it has to be a power trip too. Not that I think Obama was on that, but the current dude, and guys like Romney who feel like they have something to prove? Definitely.
