Crazy shit - my dad was working in real-estate and was trying to help one of the friends from his theology class build a home in Cary, NC. The woman was Kenyan, been in the US for maybe 3 years I think but she was extremely sheltered for most of it. We invited her over dinner once and the topic of her impressions finally came up... man wow

She told us that on the flight over she was literally warned by video and travel advisory to watch out for Black Americans. Every stereotype in the book was apparently on display during the long flight over. She said the only reason she grew to be so comfortable with us is because "We looked like some of the good ones". It was a big gathering but I think everyone was just staggered to silence when she laid all that out so plainly.

Eventually she did manage to bring over the rest of her family. They were extremely well off back in Kenya from what I understand, but they still put everything into making the jump to the US.
