It was disappointing because he seemed to me (as an outsider) one of the few levelled people in that admin.
But what an odd statement to make...
There are 4 types of persons who want to serve Trump on that level:
-Spineless worms
-Racists
-People trying to get rich
-Spineless racist worms trying to get rich
There is no decency in these people.

It's so fucking weird that even in AP US History we never got around to reading The Cornerstone Speech.
Almost as if the people who come up with the curriculum wanted it hidden from view.

"Honorable people."
"Both sides."
If you replaced every mention of "White Man" in that speech with "Aryan Race", the effect is pretty breathtaking.
Even AP us history is stick in the mire that is not really being cynical enough and honest enough about how minorities and women have been treated in this country tbh. It's a shame too because it would make for a better understanding of how stuff works now if people were ultimately more up to date on just how fucked up some stuff was mere decades ago. Like even in my lifetime married persons coulda been raping each other and the law couldn't do shit about it because you're just supposed to let your spouse do that, otherwise why be married. When coming face to face with this disgusting reality a lot more nastiness becomes crystallized and you're less shocked, more ready to right wrongs.
Its funny (sad), but I learned about the Missouri Compromise on my own time - it was never taught to me in school. Even college.
Us History is some linear trash and then the modern stuff is basically "women got the vote and minorities had the Civil RIghts Act and we good now." Bro, no?
We had an entire unit dedicated to reflecting on the legacy of Manifest Destiny and US Imperialism in late 1800s. It was very clear to me that some people in charge of writing the tests wanted us to think critically about what kind of nation America really was and what sins we have yet to atone for.
But It's infuriating to me that this gaping racial wound is the one thing they refuse to touch.

Racism and sexism is stuff that was glossed over. Women and minorities (NA and black people) legitimately owned by the Spanish then the Americans respectively and we all act shocked we live in a society where they're treated like disposable human vestibules for rape and murder.
Man, my history was trash in school - if it weren't for my family and the company they kept directing me, I'd have been much worse off.
For example, yeah I'd 'heard' about the Trail of Tears in school. It was all of 1 paragraph in my junior year american history class. For my end of year project, one of my dad's friend's suggested that I do my book report on something related to it. I watched a documentary on it because I was lazy like that, and yeah
fuck everyone lol
I was heated for months.
But yeah... I'd heard of the Fugitive Slave Act and Dred Scott v Sanford, but nothing on Bleeding Kansas

Learning US history in the UK was eye opening,
I don't know how history is taught in the States.
No censorship here when it came to lynching of blacks police brutally with dogs during the civil rights movement.
The holocaust bit of my A levels was harrowing.
But learning thus stuff is essential, lest future generations repeat the same mistakes.

It's not...fully. Americans have the audacity to talk down other countries about their rewriting of history (rightfully so), when we do the same: largely via omission and watering the facts down.
Jim Crow laws and the 3/5ths compromise is what I remember spending the most time on in the public schools I attended. The Dred Scott case was mentioned in passing and I don't recall any of the other compromises.
I do not remember what they taught us the Civil War was fought over, but slavery was a bigger topic than state rights. It feels like, 20 years later, the same amount of time spent on battles was spent on Harriet Tubman, the underground railroad, and Frederick Douglass.
The Trail of Tears was talked about. But it was just pointing out that it was a terrible thing the US government did and devastated many, many, many native American peoples. It was more than a single paragraph, but we also didn't cover it for a week or more like we did on slavery during and prior to the Civil War.
Most of the slavery topics were talked about in depth during middle school and I didn't grasp what a big deal it was because I guess I was a little shit head. Hopefully, I'm remembering things more or less correctly because this was all 15-20 years ago and human memory is known to be faulty.
e: for those who don't know where I grew up, it was in South Louisiana

Larger issue is it comes down to where you live in the US as well.
If you live in a pretty liberal state, you will end up learning some more of the detailed history vs. many of the more conservative states have some major historical revisionism or just omit things entirely.
By Random Ass Username Go To PostJohn Kelly has been spending too much time in that myopia zone. It's clearly eroding his brain. Even if he thought shit like this to say it aloud is definitely some whole other garbage. Hope Mattis just keeps the Tangerine Nightmare away from the war toys.
False. He was a shitty racist general and he’s a shitty racist chief of staff. Military officers have more than a little bit in common with police officers.
As for how history is taught in the States, I didn't hear about Dred Scott until Rob Moore's comments (i think it was him)
What’s funny about that jr tweet, aside from everything everyone has pointed out already, is that him and his kind are the first to always say “stop politicizing this thing” yet dude politicizes Halloween unprovoked.

The funniest part about Don Jr’s tweet is it shows he forced his little girl to dress up as NYPD because we all know little girls aren’t infatuated by Disney characters but #BlueLivesMatter.

People know they're getting screwed over every day when it comes to taxes, healthcare, retirement, and wages.
If the Dems knew their head from their ass they'd be able to exploit this for massive electoral gains. Promise people tangible gains in their quality of life and they'll vote for you.
Not feeling optimistic about them doing that though.

They didn't find anyone who wanted their policies, but their report didn't reflect that at all. The fact that Third Way has an influence over the DNC says a lot about why they don't understand a fucking thing about the electorate.

Dems don't need to become rabidly pro-gun, but they need to offer solutions that address the basic economic and health insecurity that a huge number of people are needlessly experiencing every day.
People like Third Way can hardly even be counted as liberal. They should be booted to the fucking curb.
By Smoke Dogg Go To PostPound for pound, in terms of years of history, who is the vilest villain of them all?
This is sort of a challenging question because there's been so much flux over the last 100-200 years. At one point Germany was probably the most awful. Hasn't been that way for a half a century or more though. Now we're cracking jokes about Angela being the leader of the free world. Perspective also matters. If you're looking at it from the lens of imperialism, you'll get different results. South African is the result of imperialism for instance and they have the apartheid on their hands. The US at time has been the evil participant and at time not. How many genocides have happened? Russia? China? North Korea? Turkey?

To respond with some substance: the Dems offered nothing that could be summed up as a slogan or as an appeal to emotional decency.
The basic question we're grappling with in this country is whether everyone deserves a basic degree of security from the worst things that life can throw at you. The Republicans say "HELL NO" loudly, and the Dems say "if you go to strongertogether.org and read our 15-point plan that includes job training and tax credits for small business owners you'll see that we are clearly the better option."
They need to stop marketing the wonkish stuff and talk about healthcare, a basic living wage, and retirement security as rights, not as benchmarks to be hopefully reached if we just keep on incrementally progressing for 50 more years.
People are hurting now and they don't. fucking. listen.
