Flake retiring is good for the short-term since he should be free to check Trump a little more. But it might lead to more popular candidates hopping in on the GOP side. And the Dems probably would have beat Flake if he somehow won the GOP primary considering how unpopular he is, but he was looking like a goner.
By Randolph Freelander Go To PostSo either Dems will take that seat or we'll get whatever positively insane Republican that survives the awful primary voters. The former is what I'm hoping for (obviously)
Also in some lighter news, detained immigrants do have rights!:
By RumbleHumble Go To PostThe former is what I'm hoping for (obviously)
Most definitely.
Him retiring probably makes the seat more likely Dem than hurts them. If Flake was going to win re-election, it was going to be because of his incumbency advantage.

Moderate, bisexual atheist Kristin Sienma will save us.
Was hoping Flake would run for re-election. I wonder how much support a full-on Trumper nutbag would get in general against Sinema.
What are the odds that as soon as Trump hears about this on tomorrow's Fox & Friends, the first call he makes is to Joe Arpaio.

Is Aaron Strife here? He needs to do some handicap analysis of AZ Sen race. Its not the same without him.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Pigeon showed up for one post yesterday ...
Maybe with some more familiar faces here the guys will come out of their discord hiding lol.
All these folks speaking out and quitting like Flake and Corker know something. Whether it's about the Russia investigation, Niger, or something else, they are betting on Trump's glass house crashing down sometime in the near future. They are laying down the gauntlet and getting ahead of it rather than be personally implicated when it comes out.
Twitter tells me Flake is making one heck of a speech, as per the usual Republican pattern of not speaking up until it no longer matters.
By Randolph Freelander Go To PostTwitter tells me Flake is making one heck of a speech, as per the usual Republican pattern of not speaking up until it no longer matters.I think that the culture within govt and parties has been so perverted, to them this is the equivalent of finding conscience and doing the right thing, but only way to apparently do that is not run for re-election so you can spit fire.
Also ima need a link of the video when anyone gets it
By Barzul Go To PostIf we take the House and a majority in the senate. Trump's presidency is legit over.
I personally think it's over if we just take the house and the GOP passes their tax bill before we do. Hoping for a senate win seems like I'm setting myself up for a sure disappointment.
Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) on Senate floor just now:
"It is time for our complicity and our accomodation of the unacceptable to end."

Corker maybe but I think Jeff probably just got bad internal polls and decided it wasnt worth the money.
By RumbleHumble Go To PostIt just depended on the day.LMFAO @ Jeff Flake calling himself a "libertarian-leaning Republican". Apparently Libertarian was redefined as "unabashed corporate shill monkey" at some point in the recent past.
Oh hey guys, nbd, Jeff Flake just not seeking re-election is all:

Wouldn't this kind of improve GOP's odds in the seat? Since Flake and whoever won't be roughing each other up in the primary.

Depends on how much of a lag Trump would be. I would imagine that's where they would punch at each other. There's something to be said about incumbency too. Though his #'s are in the tank so I'm not sure that's a huge deal.
By ClownsAreATen Go To PostWouldn't this kind of improve GOP's odds in the seat? Since Flake and whoever won't be roughing each other up in the primary.
There will still be a primary. Much easier for a Dem to knock someone new than an incumbent.
By ClownsAreATen Go To PostWouldn't this kind of improve GOP's odds in the seat? Since Flake and whoever won't be roughing each other up in the primary.I'd think it'd do the opposite. Generic Republicans v. Generic Democrat contests have Generic Democrats winning these days, right?
By ClownsAreATen Go To PostWouldn't this kind of improve GOP's odds in the seat? Since Flake and whoever won't be roughing each other up in the primary.I think it's a net zero because Ward was going to beat Flake in the primary anyway.
Also, Ward is unbeatable in a GOP primary for this seat. Any sane Republican is waiting for McCain's seat.

Eh, now you have a potential 5-6 race in the primary on the GOP side. It really depends on who runs

I agree. I also think part of what is going on is realizing they can't govern with Trump as head of the executive. They would tolerate this a lot more if they could repeal and replace Obamacare and get tax cuts, but POTUS keeps making that impossible with his fuck ups, so if you know if the things you care about aren't going to get passed and you know Mueller is coming for dat ass, why deal with the abuse of people calling you a RINO and getting nothing to show for it?
Incumbents always have an advantage.
An open seat in a swingy state in the midterm of a popular president almost always goes to the opposition party. This should be a slam dunk for Dems no matter who Republicans nominate.

By ned_ballad Go To PostHe's still going to vote yes on every bill McConnell puts in front of himBut thats not the point. He's a loyal republican and would be fine under a Mitt Romney or W admin. All the Senators speaking out (McCain, Flake, Liddle' Bob Corker) would vote for every conservative agenda item no matter how hypocritical. The problem is Trump. They rightfully believe he's a dangerous, petty orange teletubby, and would love nothing more than to work under Pence admin and kill social programs in peace.
Also cue incoming Trump tweet something along the lines of "Flake begging for my endorsement, I said No! He left crying and wont run"
Any one else bothered by Sarah Huckabee-Sanders eyebrow? Like she’s constantly doing a shitty racist impression of the Rock.
I honestly want someone to tell her to put her eyebrow down.
