"Multiple people" have been shot dead by a lone gunman at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida, say officials.
The airport said there was an "ongoing incident" at the baggage claim area in Terminal 2.
There were several people dead and one person in custody, Broward Sheriff's office said in a tweet.
Hundreds of people were standing on the tarmac as dozens of police cars and ambulances rushed to the scene.
Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said in a tweet: "I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running."
A witness told NBC News the gunman was shot by police less than a minute after the shooting began.
"He was gunned down by police," Mark Lea from Minneapolis told the network.
"It was absolutely surreal," he said.
"People were scared and frantically running to avoid being shot. People were tripping over each other. They were trying to make a fast exit out of the door."

Guy gets off flight from Canada. Has a checked gun in baggage claim, gets it, goes to bathroom, loads it. Proceeds to shoot people in baggage claim.
By Tea Go To PostChecked and Carry On are two diff things.True but imo you shouldn't be allowed to bring a gun on a plane regardless.

if cbs is reporting using the sources that i think they are.... yikes
By NinjaFridge Go To PostStill seems like a massive security flaw.eh, say you outlaw it - does baggage claim / in-processing become any less vulnerable to the same kind of thing? its not like people are stepping off planes blasting with any kind of regularity. this is a strangely rare event when it comes to shootings imo
Maybe they should only allow you to check your gun and make you buy ammo where you land? My family and I will occasionally travel to hunt and we check our shot guns.
By DY_nasty Go To Postif cbs is reporting using the sources that i think they are…. yikesMy opinion is definitely biased on this. America's relationship with guns is pretty unique, not something i've experienced.

The suspect showed up several months ago at the FBI office in Anchorage, law enforcement officials told CNN. He was interviewed and said he was hearing voices in his head, including some telling him to join ISIS. He was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, the officials said. He voluntarily checked himself in, the officials explained.fucking hell

Sounds cruel and unusually uncivilized to expose those poor animals to a slow death reading Elchele posts. At least a gun is a quick death
so he's an ex military? Terrible
We're genuinely sorry about him. FWIW nobody really wants him but whatcha gonna doooooo

Devastating. Not much else to say.
RIP to the victims and condolences to their loved ones.
It is legitimately frightening just how much this has become part of the norm plus how jaded it manages to make you in the process.
Don't really know exactly how that would work over here either. It's certainly possible but it'd probably be somewhat of a nightmare bureaucratically/logistically.

By Fenderputty Go To PostDoes nobody hunt in Europe?Plenty of people hunt, especially throughout Scandinavia - but I would say it (very) rarely transcends into having to travel by aeroplane and having to check your rifles as baggage in order to do so. There's an abundance of game wherever.

I could hop on a train out to the county right, buy a gun and ammo at a pawnshop or Kmart/Walmart; hop on the same train in the opposite direction and get off at BWI. Within 30 seconds I could be off the train with a loaded rifle, inside the airport facing hundreds of people waiting to get through TSA.
Nothing could have been done to prevent this from happening. Nothing will be done preventing this from happening again. This will happen again, and again, nothing will change. This is just how it is and will be for the foreseeable future. Just have to deal with it.

Except this guy self reported he was not mentally well. IF the Republicans hadn't killed certain laws that would have meant he would have lost his gun right then and there and not been able to purchase a new one. Cut out the hand wringing shit, there was an actual solution to this case.

I mean ... there's a solution to lots of things. Single Payer healthcare for example. 60% tax rates on money made after a million and a jobs bill, democrats voting in midterms, mental health checks to get a gun, taxing capital gains like income and Trump and the entirity of the right wing being blasted off into space.
The there's the reality we live in
Yeah i totally think everyone should have government mandated health checks for constitutional rights.

Where does the constitution say we can't regulate weapons so crazy people don't get them?

If he was prevented from buying a gun from a shop, he could find a private dealer or a gun show.
Also, he lives in Alaska, which is basically the wild west when it comes to firearm regulations.
Currently, Alaska gun laws do not require registration or permit to purchase or carry rifles, shotguns, and/or handguns. Although Alaska gun laws are still subject to federal gun laws, they also maintain their own unique provisions and guidelines….There is no proper registration or permit required to possess a firearm.
Yo, it's fucking crazy up there. Plus he's a veteran which just means he has a free pass to be crazy and own a gun.
By Fenderputty Go To PostWhere does the constitution say we can't regulate weapons so crazy people don't get them?I mean, in theory, it sounds great to regulate so crazy people don't get guns... but then people will use the law for unlawful means... like when kids used to commit their parents and assume their wealth.

I don't really think we need to worry about people being unfairly institutionalized like they did with women and rich old folks to get at wealth, especially when the loss is that of the ability to obtain mass killing machines.
With that being said I don't particularly like how much "mental illness" gets bandied about against people. Those suffering from such a thing are so much more likely to BE victims not the perp.

By Jay Whatever Go To PostHow often do you think this will happen? LOLWell they already make sure it's extra hard for felons to regain their right to own guns and vote... so more often than you might think. I would rather have better, clearer regulations on guns than creating odd loopholes to exploit

The idea is absurdly stupid. What constitutes a "crazy person"? Have doctor declare it? Cool, i'll just go to another doctor and have a second opinion, and sue the first doctor while i'm at it. Not that it matters because its a direct violation of the second amendment and would be overturned by the supreme court anyway.
It's nice to declare obvious statements like "we shouldnt let crazy people have guns" but try to look at both the semantics and aftereffects of what would be required to accomplish such things.
I agree with you diehard, but you already can't buy a gun if you have a medical marijuana card. That disqualifies you from gun ownership and it's held up by the courts.
An appeals court ruled last week that a federal law prohibiting medical marijuana cardholders from purchasing guns does not violate their Second Amendment rights, because marijuana has been linked to "irrational or unpredictable behavior."
