Yeah that hasnt been much to support NVMe drives being faster than AHCI/SATA based ones when it comes to games. Except for Techspot http://www.techspot.com/news/67222-storage-real-world-performance-nvme-vs-sata-vs-hdd.html , maybe its just those two games i don't know.. but its the only thing ive found to support getting a PCIe SSD for games.
Hm... Will wait till next year to upgrade.

By Zabojnik Go To PostNoice. Pretty much the best you can get as far as gaming performance is concerned.
I'm not much of an overclocker - though that's gonna change with the new build - so I haven't been paying much attention to RAM speeds. Is 3000mhz enough?
SSDs. Are you going fullretardNVMe? I definitely plan on getting a 256-512gb m.2 PCIe drive, probably a Samsung Evo, as my system drive, but I'm kinda cooling down on the idea of buying a dedicated PCIe SSD for games. Something like an Intel 600p wouldn't set me back that much more than a SATA SSD, but from the comparisons I've seen … PCIe makes pretty much zero difference for games, so idk.
I'd be getting a 2TB SATA SSD for games and an m.2 PCIe drive (256GB) for system drive. Then a decent and big (3-5TB) HDD for general storage.

HDDs are dead as far as I'm concerned. Good riddance.

I do generally delete everything I'm not using, I'm OCD that way. However, sometimes you've gotta have certain digital media stored at high bit rates Zabo-chan.

I've been toying with the idea of buying / building a NAS for years, thinking of all the UHD blu-rays I'd rip (:blaface) and store there, but in the end ... That's just not me, I guess. And the more readily available digital media becomes, the less sense it makes to go for it.
I need my entire Steam, Origin, BNet, etc. library installed at all times due to my OCD. Currently, this takes up about 2.5 TB. >_>

GamersNexus is a great site / YT channel. Both them and PC Perspective deserve a wider audience, at least as big as some of the notorious YT top bois like JayzTwoCents, Paul's Hardware and BitWit, but they're too technical and in-depth for their own good. I, for one, am glad they're (still) around.
Speaking of peripherals, I need to buy a replacement wrist rest (or three) for my K70 RGB.
I've only had the keyboard for like 3-4 months and the rubber coating is already starting to peel off and it's driving me insane. I had the same problem on my old keyboard, but it took years. Just give me a hard plastic wrist rest, ffs. It's not like that half a millimeter of rubber makes much of a difference.

Quick update everyone:
In case you didn't notice, I renamed this thread to PC Gaming & Hardware and the general Gaming thread to Console Gaming & Hardware. We get a lot of great discussion about hardware in this thread but not so much discussion about PC gaming in either this or that one. And likewise, we get a ton of great console gaming and console hardware discussion in the Gaming thread, so we wanted to focus those threads down a bit more.

What's the deal with RAM prices currently? I bought 8GB of DDR4 last March for £32 and now they're looking more than twice that, it's ridiculous.

So what's the deal? We reached out to a few memory makers to find out. According to our sources, the DDR4 price increase is due to a number of factors, but primarily smartphones are to blame. Essentially, mobile phone production using DDR4 chips is on the rise.

I don't know. I want to believe that benchmarks will improve once AMD / motherboard makers / developers work out all the kinks, but if the past is any indication ... it's something that rarely comes to pass. The gains are usually pretty insignificant, too small to change the overall story.
I spent some time in the bios yesterday, seeing how it's been literally years since I last fiddled around with overclocking settings. My 2600k has been running on 4.5ghz since forever without skipping a beat and the more I thought about it, the more arguments for keeping it kept coming up.
I'll have to give it some more thought, but I'm starting to think that it might be a good idea to upgrade to a 1080 GTX, buy a 100hz 1440p ultrawide monitor and keep the rest until Zen 2 and Coffee Lake hit in (presumably) 2018.

Is there a reason to get an ultrawide other than to replace two side-by-side monitors?
E: I'm honestly asking what advantages it has over a normal monitor other than what I mentioned above.

Yes. Ultrawides can be even more immersive in games (unless they jack up the FOV) They also have increased resolutions without being the total hog that a 4k monitor is. Also if you watch movies, they match the aspect ratio of most movies.
I really like mine, but i could really go for the newer 37.5'' versions.

Any recommendations for PC speakers? I picked up the Logitech Z333 last week but the stupid power save shit is pissing me off.
G900 might be my mouse of forever
I didn't think missing a wire would be THAT big of a deal, but it feels really good. Mouse is solid in construction and the sensor is amazing. The fact that you can also hook it up as a wired mouse while it's charging, or if you just want a wire, is also a plus. Regular price is $150, but looks like I caught it on sale -- $106. I'm ok with the latter, but the former is part of the reason I haven't jumped until now. I thought it was a permanent drop. If anybody is interested in it I definitely recommend it.

You have one? When I asked for impressions on GAF, one owner said he didn't like it because of the ambidextrous design. After using it I can see how that would bother some people. I've had both ambi and non-ambi mice in the past, so it's not an issue for me. Love everything about it at the moment.

That EVGA 1080ti I posted a few days ago...apparently it's not coming in March but rather in May. So that's that. I'll probably go with the Strix 1080ti or another good reviewing variant. Or stick with this 1060.
And 1080ti benchmarks have leaked

By NinjaFridge Go To PostAny recommendations for PC speakers? I picked up the Logitech Z333 last week but the stupid power save shit is pissing me off.Really depends on how much you want to spend, but here are some options at various relatively cheap pricepoints:
Cyber Acoustics CA-3602
Edifier Exclaim e10
Edifier Prisma e3350BT
Harman Kardon Soundsticks III
Good options open up a lot more at the 150-250 price point, but I don't think that is in your budget, judging by the price of the Logitech Z333's.
e: Those Harman Kardon's are just visually really cool. They sound really nice for the price, too.
Also, that list of speakers is by no means definitive. Search out reviews and make sure the flaws of each system won't bother you and if there are better alternatives at that price point for what you want.
By NinjaFridge Go To PostThanks for the reply, got some research to do.Sorry I couldn't give ya a simple "buy this" recommendation. A lot of important factors to consider: budget, 2.1 or 2.0, boomy bass or articulate bass, "live" sound vs neutral vs bright vs dark vs other sound characteristics, etc.
The lower the budget, the more you have to decide what you can live without. No speakers are flawless and that's ok. It's good to find out what kind of sound you like the best for what you will be using those speakers for and get the pair that best exemplifies that aspect while staying under your budget.
Some speakers are better at certain genres of music than others. Same goes for movies and video games.
Personally, my preferences lean towards a very exacting and articulate sound along the low and mid range with the high end given just a little bit of slack, a bass that doesn't stick around, a feeling of being close to the stage in an intimate venue, and a sound that is colored a bit richer and darker than normal.
By Kibner Go To PostIs there a reason to get an ultrawide other than to replace two side-by-side monitors?they seem to be getting very popular with video editors. the applications make good use of the extra horizontal space. dat ultra wide timeline immersion.

although I've heard people say that the curve distorts the image a little, so it's generally not as good for design work. so I'm getting two 4k displays instead (rip wallet)
By NinjaFridge Go To PostThanks for the reply, got some research to do.The most important factor to consider when buying speakers you give a damn about are the acoustic proprieties of the room you'll put them in.
By Zabojnik Go To PostThe most important factor to consider when buying speakers you give a damn about are the acoustic proprieties of the room you'll put them in.At the prices he's looking at (under $100) and with the speakers being used for his PC, I don't think room acoustics will play a big role.
If it was something he was trying to feature, then absolutely.
For sure. It was more of a general consideration. I've seen people spending big bucks on speakers because their cheap ones produced 'boomy bass' and then complain about said new speakers when the problem didn't go away. In a mostly unfurnished rectangular 2x3m room. Well, duh.

In a mostly unfurnished rectangular 2x3m room. Well, duh.I ordered some dream gear for my living room last weekend (talked about some of the options I was considering in the Technology thread) and am fully aware that I won't be able to take full advantage of it due to the room I will be placing. But good speakers don't really become "outdated" as fast as a TV or video card or receiver does so if I get a new place or build my version of a "man cave" (home theater + big table for modeling and rpgs, basically) that room will be designed with it in mind.
The two satellites should be coming in this week, but I haven't received a shipping notice on the subwoofer, yet.
