Love that Microcenter off Edinger.
Bought a ton of my parts there.
Really insightful discussion about Zen with David Kanter and the PCPer guys.

why are you so interested in the TI? The timing on that card is bad. Titan X Maxwell does 4k just fine if you're okay with 30-55 fps on recent AAA releases. It seems smart to wait to upgrade for a bigger jump in a year or so with Volta.
Because I want AMD to come out aggressive AF with Vega.
I just got a 1070, which is essentially a more efficient Maxwell TX, I'm good.
But 30fps at 4k? Yuk m8

Has AMD finally been able to make a competitive CPU that isn't 90% reverse-engineering intel's stuff?
By Kibner Go To PostHas AMD finally been able to make a competitive CPU that isn't 90% reverse-engineering intel's stuff? This is a loaded question but Zen has more similarities to Intel's architectures than Bulldozer did.
By diehard Go To PostThis is a loaded question but Zen has more similarities to Intel's architectures than Bulldozer did.Similarities is fine and understandable, but the last time I remember AMD being competitive (before the core 2), they did reverse engineering of Intel stuff with minor improvements of their own. Once x64 was a thing, they were no longer able to reference intel x86 architecture and it was all "original" R&D from that point on.
Of course this is all based on memories from long ago that could have come from biased sources and I am incredibly, totally wrong.
the x64 ISA is actually an extension of the x86 ISA, originally it was called AMD64 because AMD actually made it. Intel then made EMT64 and now its evolved into x86_64. So if anything that should have given AMD an advantage.
It wasn't really that AMD was so much better then, it's that Intel was crippling x86 development by pushing Itanium and Itanium 2. Once they moved on from that, their huge R&D advantage and superior fab plants kinda took the reigns.
Even with Zen coming out, Intel will still have flat out superior processors. Where AMD can really make noise is pricing.

So if anything that should have given AMD an advantage.Yeah, I do seem to remember AMD having the best affordable 64bit CPUs for a while (maybe two years?) when they first came out. Intel had some server chips (probably the Itaniums you mentioned, iirc) and they were cost prohibitive and just not that much better.

And sometime later Intel came out with the Core 2 Duo and it's been domination since.
My memory is really very fuzzy on all this since it has been over ten years all this shit was released. lol So, thank you for the corrections. :)
The benchmark compared AMD’s unannounced processor against the following CPUs:I'm so glad I waited to hold off on getting a Haswell build.
Intel Core i7-6900K @ 3.2GHz ($1,089)
Intel Core i7-5960X @ 3.0GHz ($1,000)
Intel Core i7-6800K @ 3.4GHz ($434)
Intel core i7-7700K @ 4.2GHz ($339)
AMD FX-8350 ($150)
Out of eight tests, the Ryzen chip outperformed all the others in five: Integer Math, Floating Point Math, Sorting, Encryption, and Extended Instructions (SSE). It fell into fourth place in the Prime Numbers test, fourth place in the Physics test, and second place in the Compression test. The big takeaway here is that the Ryzen CPU outperformed Intel’s two $1,000 processors in those five tests while outperforming the Core i7-5960X processor in the Compression test … at nearly half the cost.
Processor CPU Mark Score
Intel Core i7-6900K 16,475
Intel Core i7-5960X 15,615
AMD R7 1700X 15,084
Intel Core i7-6800K 13,356
Intel core i7-7700K 11,654
AMD FX-8350 9,278

let's do this gentlemen.
Im ready to jump ship.
Got new set of screws and USB cable to connect to my motherboard from my H100i CPU header. Got rid of the push/pull setup on the H100i, and now I'm only running a push setup. Able to control the fans now that I have the H100i plugged into my motherboard. Next step is to replace the fans with some Noctua's or Corsair ML Pro series fans.
Also K95 RGB Platinum
Me being an accessory whore, I'm considering this. My current KB, Corsair K65 RGB w/ Cherry Reds is probably my favorite mech keyboard. but oddly enough I do end up missing the num pad and full length keyboard more than I thought.

Don't realize it until it's gone.
Love my K65 and it's small form, but I need a full board.
The only thing wrong with my K70 RGB is the godawful Corsair new (old now, I guess) logo sticker on the top. I'll have to do something about it one of these days. Waiting for my new custom table top to arrive, so I can start setting everything up from scratch.
Then, in a couple of months, new build. Hopefully an AMD one. What a time to be a PC enthusiast.

I got that shit on my K65. They abandoned it with some quickness after the outrage lol

Smokey, get the Corsair Lapdog for your K65 (I read it was compatible with that). Then you can do some PC gaming on the couch with little disadvantage. XD
Thinking of going wireless where possible. Looking at mice and headsets.
Kibner what are your thoughts on Razer Mamba or Logitech G900?
Kibner what are your thoughts on Razer Mamba or Logitech G900?
I had and used a Mamba for probably four years. Only mouse from Razer that has been reliable. The rubber grips will come unglued easily in humid climates. I really dug the dual wired/wireless nature of it. Great performing mouse that fit my hand well.
I have no experience with that Logitech mouse.

It looks like a tramp stamp. My main gripe tho is that it's very obviously a sticker and it doesn't match the brushed / gunmetal black of the keyboard.
By Smokey Go To PostThinking of going wireless where possible. Looking at mice and headsets. One is the greatest wireless mouse ever made and one of the best mices in general. The other is the Mamba. The PC top bois who bought it recently will back me up. The one thing I don't like about the G900 is

The enthusiasm will increase for sure with these benchmark results of the Ryzen 7 1800X. According to a verified Passmark entry for an engineering sample of AMD 1800X shows it to be better than Core i7 6900K, Core i7 5960K and Core i7 6800K CPUs. It is worth noting that the 1800X was running with a base clock speed of 3.6 GHz, and Turbo was disabled throughout the test. Also, the AMD processor was the only one running with an HDD, while other systems were using the SSDs.
According to wccftech, the tests run on the processor included math, floating point performance, prime numbers, encryption, compression, sorting, SSE performance and physics. The AMD Ryzen 7 1800X outperformed other processors in 6 out of 8 tests. Even the Intel Core i7 6900K processor couldn’t stand before the AMD offering.

Hell yeah! I wonder if the AMD chips will have hardware virtualization support? That is a selling point for me on the Intel chips.
By Kibner Go To PostHell yeah! I wonder if the AMD chips will have hardware virtualization support? That is a selling point for me on the Intel chips. It will, there's no way they could get away with a new architecture that didn't support AMD-V extensions.
By diehard Go To PostIt will, there's no way they could get away with a new architecture that didn't support AMD-V extensions. Then I see no downsides for me switching to AMD for my next CPU upgrade.

what a time to be thinking about upgrading. hoping their gpus can put a fucking dent in nvidia's "pricing for junkies" strategy.
At a briefing on Tuesday ahead of its Wednesday launch, AMD again showed how its Ryzen chip matches or outperforms Intel’s best and brightest, this time in the popular Maxon CineBench benchmark.
Just one more hurdle for me. How Ryzen Handles Adobe programs such as Premiere and After effects where Premiere performs better with more cores while AE performs better on higher clocks but less cores.
