Lenovo T-Series Thinkpads (or better) or MacBooks are the only reliable laptops, imo. If you have to get a different brand, make sure it is part of their business line.

And here's Asus' ROG x299 boards
I naturally lean towards Asus as that's what my X79 board is, but I've also been impressed by some of MSI's stuff. I like how the M7 ACK looks

Pilon -- I know you just got a mechanical keyboard, but you said one of the reasons you stuck with the Logitech for so long was because of the LCD screen. Looks like EVGA is working on a mechanical board that has a screen:
jesus christ that's EXACTLY what I want
thanks, now going to cry when I find out how much it is
edit: sounds like it wasn't shown at CES2017 or if it was nothing was said about release date's, sounds like vaporware :(

Also move to NVMe because.. reasons?
Yeahhhh
Playing BF1 yesterday at ~140 fps had a moment of "do I really need to upgrade". Just now getting to the point where 4+ cores are going to be used in gaming. Already have a 1440p 144hz screen. I've just been there for 2+ years just waiting for everything else to catch up, so it naturally feels like I gotta upgrade. All things considered it's a pretty optimal setup.
E: I do want to get a new, smaller PSU tho. Running this 1300w monster from my Tri-SLI days, and there's no need. Sell the 1300w and move down to a newer, smaller PSU - EVGA G3 750w PSU.
Cross-posting from the tech thread, but noteworthy in here:
Basically, you'll be able to game on the new iMacs now. Up to 64GB RAM support and external GPU support so you can do VR.

They really .. really need to work on their OpenGL implementation though. It's kinda terrible. I didn't watch the whole conference but i hope the next OS has improvements there.
What I'm looking at, so far:
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($185.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - GA-AB350-GAMING 3 ATX AM4 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($116.88 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Sandisk - SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($83.35 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI - Radeon RX 580 8GB GAMING X Video Card ($254.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Fractal Design - Define C with Window ATX Mid Tower Case ($82.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: SeaSonic - G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($49.90 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($89.89 @ OutletPC)
Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver - 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver 3.5g Thermal Paste ($6.89 @ OutletPC)
Total: $950.76
Only thing that I'm unsure of is if I'll need to get a WiFi card. I already have another SSD and a regular HD for storage.
Also, finding that AMD card seems to be a real bitch. Seems like it's been out of stock on Newegg for a minute.

I think you will be happy with that PC, Eldritch. If you are still a student, see if there is a way to get a discount on Windows (and other MS software). If you still have access to your old school email, try using that to apply for their student discounts.
I'm thinking about buying that 4k monitor and sticking to 1 monitor instead of 2.
I've used 2 forever mostly due to how much I used to play WoW and how useful that second screen is but for other stuff? The second screen is more distracting than anything else. And when I play a lot of FPSes, windowed fullscreen is bad for aiming and input lag.
I may just look for a 144hz monitor instead though

By Zabojnik Go To PostHDR monitors were a mistake.lol so HDR is just a shift in luminance value towards higher exposure.

By Kabro Go To Postlol so HDR is just a shift in luminance value towards higher exposure. It is that only if thats what the game is developed for. You actually get some of these same muted effects running games make for 8 bit color on 10 bit panels. There shouldn't be anything inherent within HDR or the panel that would do that, i don't know enough about ME's HDR to guess as to why though.
It'll be a while before the tech matures and devs learn to utilize it to its full extent. Your sacrifice won't be in vain, Smokey & Cavalo. :bigbosssalute:

Go 240hz m8. This is the future.
By diehard Go To PostGet the M.2 version for sure, not only is it cheaper but you will save on some cabling and free up a drive bay for the exact same perfomance. Olnly possible downside is that its harder to hook up to a different computer should you need to for whatever reason. Maybe take a look at the MX300.. you essentially get a "free" 25GB for a drive i'd place on the exact same level as the Samsung.I'm getting this message on my PartPicker build when I added the 960
The motherboard M.2 slot #0 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6Gb/s port is disabled. So I lose a SATA slot regardless of M.2 or NVMe (MOBO has 6 so eh). Looking at the Crucial MX300 275 M.2, my own SSD is a Crucial so it looks like the winner in the clubhouse.

Case: trying to find a mid ATX case with lighting on the outside and a side window (she likes that) or an Alienware-like model. I initially wanted this but it didn't have a front ODD for DVDs.
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 Tower Cooler For AMD/Intel CPU's
Power Supply: Will look for towards the end of the build (Corsair brands come up alot on your list). May need a 650W one.
MOBO: MSI Z270 SLI Plus ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5
Memory: 16GB (Maybe Corsair Vengeance RMB?)
SSD: Crucial MX300 275GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
HDD 1: 2 OR 3 TB (7200RPM) 3.5inch SATA Hard Drive (WD Black or Blue) Main HDD for programs
HDD 2: 1 TB 7200RPM) 3.5inch SATA Hard Drive (WD Black or Blue); need to pull old HDD from old computer to copy stuff to main HDD. This will be used for storing pictures and vids.
Optical/DVD Drive: 8x DVD+/-RW 9.5mm ODD Burner DVD drive. Needed to watch DVDs
Also is it me, or did 1070s get really fucking expensive? I know I saw a few in the 350-390 range a few months ago, even cheaper. With all the new cards coming out why isn't the price dropping?

The Samsung would have better colors but the Zowie is purpose built for long gaming periods. I don't have any opinion on the LG.

Went with the Samsung as an early birthday present for myself.
After buying that, the s7 and the 4k tv I think I'm good buying new tech for a while
though i may hold off just a bit til I get a 1080. I rarely go over 60 FPS in most the games I play

My point of reference is the chart in this link sorted by GPU Clock. Again, a high base clock is what I'm looking to get for her since I wasn't planning on OC'ing the card. I'm researching 6-7 other 1070 card versions to see highest base clock vs. price point. Any recommendations?
EDIT: like the EVGA FTW ACX 3.0 alot so far, I always bought my cards from them in the past. Zotac AMP! 1070 card looks nice too.

I need to get around to overclocking my 7700k and 1080 gtx one of these days. The fact is I feel like I have zero reasons to right now. Everything runs at 60-100fps at max settings (or near as) at 1440p, with g-sync taking care of smoothing what little needs smoothing. Guess I'll go for a moderate OC.
Frankman, that is a 1.6% difference between fastest and slowest clocks. The difference in performance is negligible.
Like, that would be the difference between getting 100fps and 102fps. It's nothing anyone will notice.

I know my sister won't notice, but this is the same person I repeatedly have to talk off 1080Tis and Ryzen cards when she basically plays BigFish Games. To paraphrase Rick Sanchez, it's like trying to use Disney bucks at a Caesar's Palace.

Leaving 10-15+ fps on the table
Literally takes 5-10 mins to OC
30 mins for a thorough job
Buying an unlocked processor and not overclocking is wasting money.
I'm glad I learned how to do it with my i5-750, was much more challenging than my 3570k and the new boards are probably childs play. I could probably push my 3570k more than 4.2, but I'm already higher than I'd like on voltages although my temps are cool (Noctua D14). Just didn't win the chip lottery

The only spec that Samsung’s three monitors don’t share are screen resolution: the 49-inch has a 3840×1080 panel, while its smaller 31.5 and 27-inch brethren have 2560×1440 panels. Personally, I have no need of a 49-inch curved display, much less the space to put it, but Samsung is convinced that the user who needs that ultrawide screen real estate definitely exists.
