I SEE YOU BIG DAWG
One day in and I already know I'm never going back. What an absolutely sensational experience. I haven't done extensive testing yet, but it's looking like I won the fucking panel lottery. No dead pixels, no IPS glow or BLB to speak of (there's some in the bottom left corner, but nothing compared to what some have been getting and way less than on the cheap Iiyama monitor I bought recently). I've had no problems overclocking the panel to 100hz and I'm getting no coil whine. The panel was manufactured in January of this year, so I guess Acer's QC has gotten better after all. 10/10, would buy again. Also, the stand, while minimalistic and nice looking, will have to go. Takes way to much space on the desk and that's a 70-80cm deep desk. I've no idea how people with Ikea Karlby setups make do. On an articulating arm on the wall you go. Soon.
Desktop use will take some getting used to, as expected. I'm looking into window managers, one of these will do, I'm guessing. Recommendations?

Well, I've confirmed that my K70 has indeed developed key chattering. Warranty expires next month. Che culo.
By Smokey Go To PostTf is key chattering?"Key chattering or simply chattering, is an undesirable phenomenon that can affect certain types of keyboard switches. The effect of this problem is that a single press of the key results in multiple registered inputs. As an example, typing the word 'Deskthority' on a keyboard with a defective 'K' key suffering from chatter may yield the result 'Deskkthority'."
Logitech 810 still strong
It went from annoying to downright insufferable over the past couple of months. Apparently it's a pretty common problem with the K70. I might get it repaired and then flip it. I played around with the 810 in a shop the other day. Very nice. Not a fan of how the cable protrudes from the keyboard tho, but that's on me. I don't think I'll ever be happy with a keyboard until someone finally releases a decent wireless mechanical. Logitech pls.

It seems I've stumbled upon a well-kept secret when it comes to mechanical keyboards that use Cherry MX switches (Kailh probably too). They all succumb to an issue - key chattering. Either something (dirt, dust, hair, ash, plastic dust, …) gets inside the MX switch or it simply comes "of age" AND the switch starts to register as a double-click (but not each time). Sometimes it takes a year, sometimes less. It's a wide-spread issue.
How did I come to find that? My "g" key started experiencing "gg" sometimes instead of "g". I've noticed it a few days back (that it happens sometimes) but tonight it became really annoying. So I did some research.

Does anybody know what Samba's (SMB) username is tied to? Is it the computer's name? If not, how does one go about changing it to something else in Windows?
Also, I know I'm lttp, but Widows 10 automatic updating / restarting is something else. Fucking Microsoft.

By Kibner Go To PostBefore starting the game, open task manager and flip to the performance tab (the one with all the graphs). If you right click on the CPU graph, you can change the view to show all the logical processors.
Play the game for a minute and then go check those graphs to see if something is being more heavily utilized than it should.
I'm assuming you have Windows and your drivers all up to date? Also, what OS are you running? Do you have other programs going at the same time as those games?
By Smokey Go To PostHave you OC'd the cpu yet. If not you're being bottlenecked. The duos could be a result of your GPU utilization depending on how hard the CPU is working at that time.
By diehard Go To PostWhen you say maxed out , does that include AA? Most benchmarks online won't include AA in their settings, it can totally kill framerates.
did some tweaking, thanx for the heads up. switching on xmp in the bios to fully utilize the 3200 mhz seems to have helped things a bit.
If you download GeForce Experience, it will do a nice job of choosing appropriate settings for games.
Core i9 processors rumored to hit in June. Intel will be rebranding the quad core Kaby Lake-X CPUs as i7s, and the 6, 8, 10, and 12 core Skylake-X as i9s.

If you have a distaste for AMD rumors, well, don't worry—we have some new dirt about Intel's upcoming hardware today, too. The skinny is this: if the info is accurate, Intel will be branding its purported quad-core Kaby Lake-X CPUs as Core i7s, while the rumored six-, eight-, 10-, and 12-core Skylake-X CPUs on the same platform will be known as Core i9s. Watch your sodium level as we dive in.
There's a lot to talk about here. Most profound is further fuel for the notion that Intel will once again be increasing the core count of its top-shelf Core-series processor, this time to 12 cores. The idea of having to buy a ten-core processor to run a pair of graphics cards with a full 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0 for each remains as annoying as ever.
7820X at minimum for me.
By Laboured Go To PostAssume the i9s will need a different mobo socket compared to say the i7-7700?
Yeah. Its their next HEDT socket, X99 successor.
Putting 4C/4T processors on that socket is kinda silly. Good strategy to get people to buy that expecting to upgrade later though.

A coworker of mine is considering going with x299 and kaby lake for this reason, so seems to be working even in these early stages
***UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS IF USING NVIDIA***

While all the attention was on bugfixes and performance improvements for the latest games, this not-so-small change in the latest drivers should give you incentive to upgrade:
NVIDIA Security Bulletin 4462
Even though the article doesn't specifically say it, digging information on the separate CVE's brings this answer:
Quote:
All versions of the NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver contain a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgDdiEscape where user provided input can trigger an access to a pointer that has not been initialized which may lead to denial of service or potential escalation of privileges.
The only mention you'll find in the official change log is this one: "Adds security updates for driver components." Weird that they didn't point it out in the web articles or forum posts. Since it's such a massive security breach, opening up about patching it is always a good idea. Not burying it in a short sentence inside an extended .PDF file.
- For Windows Users everything before 382.05 [GeForce Branch] and 377.35 [Quadro Branch] is vulnerable to all the exploits described in the article.
- For Linux Users everything before 381.22 [GeForce Branch] and 375.66 [Quadro Branch] is vulnerable to all the exploits described in the article.
Yes, 382.05 or 382.19 might have brought it's own share of bugs that you aren't willing to cope. But the scale of this security vulnerability can't easily be ignored. So for anyone still on older versions of the video driver, an update right now sounds like a great idea

Open up Windows Device Manager, expand "Display adapters", right-click on your card and go to "Properties", click on the "Driver" tab, make sure the last few digits of the driver version are 38205 (my full driver version is shown as 22.21.13.8205).
ffs nvidia
i hadn't updated my drivers since october since there's so many issues with nvidia's new drivers

Well fuck me then. I got Computex completely mixed up with something else.
Did a fresh install of W10 and moved back to the Creator's Update. As part of the fresh install, I decided to wipe all of my drives. There was too much stuff spread out across my 3 drives, and I've been wanting a clean start for a while anyway.
Only regret is the Witcher 3 save file. I know my time was in the upper 20 hour range. Won't be replaying that again, gg.

After my fresh install I've been exclusively using Edge. Haven't even installed Firefox or Chrome.
It's not bad at all in its current state. When it was first launched it was rough.

Is it safe to install the Creator's Update now? I want to tweak the fuck out of W10, but I don't want to have to do it again after applying the CU.
When I installed it some weeks ago and complained about gaming performance, it turns out I forgot to change my monitor refresh rate back to 144hz. After the update it was at 59hz. It also defaulted to Balanced Power and not the High Performance setting I'd been accustomed to. That resulted in my processor not running at it's overclock of 4.5ghz, but rather it's default clock of 3.4ghz. I didn't realize all of this at the time. When I went to game you can imagine it was a stuttering piece of shit and that's why I rolled back. Haven't noticed anything after addressing those two items this second time around.
e: My PC usage is 90% gaming/entertainment. I don't have multiple partitions, VMs, intensive coding, etc going on. There could be some deeper issues if you're doing stuff like the above that I'm not aware of.

Bois, a PC audio quesiton. If I wanted to connect a sub to my bro's Sound Blaster ZxR with a a LFE cable (basically a cable with cinch male plugs on both ends) using the card's center / sub 3.5mm input ... would a mono female cinch - male 3.5mm cable do, or do I need the plug that goes into the center / sub input on the sound card to be stereo? Logic suggests it's the latter, seeing how that input carries both signals and I've no idea at what depth the connectors for each are located.
This should do it, right? The stereo jack goes into the sound card, one of the cinch plugs goes into the sub's LFE output.

Yes it'll do because those support stereo. See the two black lines on the male connector? That indicates stereo.
By reilo Go To PostYes it'll do because those support stereo. See the two black lines on the male connector? That indicates stereo.Yes, I'm familiar with the concept of stereo plugs. :P I was just wondering if I could've gotten away with a mono 3.5mm plug, since I'll be only using the sub signal out of the combo center speaker / sub output. So I guess that's that, I think I might have one of those cables stashed somewhere.
I seem to remember a discussion about PC speakers, but I might as well ask. Any recommendations for a 2.1 setup in the 400-600€/$ ballpark for speakers + 200-300€/$ for a sub? Asking for my breh, I've been out of the speakers game for a while now, I'm happy with my Tannoy monitors. Ease of use is an important factor, stuff like the speakers turning themselves off after a period of inactivity, etc.
I was gonna suggest a Rythmik sealed or rear ported sub but those are $540 and $550, respectively. :(
All suggestions welcome! I wouldn't put it past my bro to go over budget, even dramatically so, if he found something he deems perfect for his needs.
Looking at mobos right now to pair with a i7-7700K for my sister (won't OC). Going with a Z270 Board, seems to be the norm for them. Features aside trying to keep price below $200. see alot of good suggestions, anyone have personal experience?

Looking at the MSI Z270 SLI Plus and the MSI Z270 Gaming M5 and trying to see what extra features the M5 has and if she actually needs/uses them.
Comparison between the two (brain melting)
The M5 is $50 more expensive doe, but we aren't coming close to "my" budget yet.
